Well... This was a quickie read... and there were several things that brought it down for me, but the author's writing is excellent, so there is potential. Maybe future books will be better.

Unlike many other free books available for kindle, this one actually had decent writing, in that I didn't finish with the impression of terrible spelling or back grammar, though I did get thrown off occasionally by clichés. So why exactly couldn't I finish reading it? Well, it was probably because of the fact that the execution of the story completely missed the mark.

It's a romance, I get that. I knew that when I downloaded it and I knew that when I started to read it. The problem is that the "romance" is by far and away the weakest part of the novel. There are several reasons for this, from the predictability that other reviews talk about to the very "Hallmark" view of romance but by far and away my biggest problem is that the main relationship seemed too much like incest to me. See, while the novel goes to great pains to point out that Callie and whatever-his-name-was aren't blood related and weren't raised together, it completely side stepped the issue that, in many places in the world, they would still be considered step-siblings even if Callie's father didn't know about her and that means that legally, they are siblings. No ifs or buts; in those places, it would be illegal for them to marry. Do I know anything about the relevant laws in the place where it was set (I know it said many times in the novel but a. I don't know or care about American geography, b. there was no sense of place except as a convenient place that I assume the author knew enough about to write and c. went backwards and forwards between too detailed and not detailed enough so I tended to skip over those sections) but that doesn't make the idea of the relationship any less creepy and icky for me.

The other problem with the romance is that the two main characters were both extremely formulaic and bland. Frankly, I didn't care about then a jot. The love interest seemed to fall head over heels in about three pages for no reason whatsoever while she apparently fell in love with him because... actually, I don't really know but maybe that was explained in the second half of the book. To be frank, I found that the only kind of adjective associated with her was 'teacher', which I personally think is overused in fiction as shorthand for caring, nurturing and giving without having to actually show those things. I don't know if that was the intent here, but there was certainly very little characterisation.

In point of fact, there was only one thing that kept me reading as long as I did and that was that I found the situation of the Sherbrookes having to integrate a new relative into their family to be quite interesting. The senior Sherbrokes, in particular, and Jake to an extent have very interesting reactions to Callie's presence that I think could have made very interesting novel on it's own but instead the potential is wasted. The whole thing feels contrived as a way to put a "teacher" (who never seems to think much about her job except as a reason why she can spend a fair amount of times with the Sherbrokes during the summer) in the way of a billionaire.

To sum up, this novel feels to me like superficial wish fulfilment where the romance overwhelms the potential of decent writing, a few intriguing characters and the possibility of a truly interesting situation.(less)

The plot is fairly simple: Callie’s mother leaves a confession in a letter that, upon her death, was sent to the father she’d hidden Callie from all her life. Said father is Warren Sherbrooke, who happens to be running for president. The revelation comes as a shock to all parties involved but Warren is determined to meet this long-lost daughter and bring her into the family fold. His campaign manager, wife and step son, Dylan, aren’t convinced that she really is his daughter and not just some bawd with her own agenda trying to scam them / hurt Warren’s chances of winning the election. So Dylan offers to be the one to go and meet her in order to take her measure.

As soon as he sees her he can’t deny the family resemblance and knows that she is who the letter claims she is. Warren’s campaign manager is still wary though and Dylan agrees to keep an eye on her in order to make sure that she doesn’t do anything potentially disastrous, such as taking her story to the media.

Spending time together soon leads to initial attraction transforming into deep feelings taking root and it’s not long before their relationship turns physical. It can’t be that easy, though, and an overhead conversation leads to Callie feeling shattered and betrayed, and Dylan having to overcome old fears in order to ensure future happiness.

The vast majority of the book focuses on Callie and Dylan and what they get up to together. There are various activities and landmarks described, which the author certainly has a knack for, but I did occasionally find my interest waning as things took too long to get to the point. In fact, it isn’t until the 75% mark that the spanner actually gets thrown in the works. Although I did enjoy reading about their outings together and the author did a fantastic job of bringing Massachusetts to life for me, I would have preferred to see more interaction between Callie and the other Sherwoodes instead. She doesn’t get to spend very much time with her father at all, despite it being his desire to get to know her that pushes the narrative. The ending also felt a little rushed in comparison with how drawn out a lot of the rest of it was.

There are some minor continuation errors, such as Callie claims she’s only ever left Massachusetts once to go to Florida, but later in the book she talks about a school trip to New York. Now, admittedly I’m not all that familiar with US geographical layout, but I’m 99.99% sure that New York is not in Massachusetts, although I suppose it could be considered close enough that it’s not all that exciting (like how my home in France is close enough to Switzerland that a trip across the Swiss border is not all that out of the ordinary).

Generally speaking, I prefer my stories to have a little bit more conflict in them, but as an easy-read romance, this book succeeded in alleviating me of the headache my day had caused!(less)

Dylan is surprised by Callie's answer, and is even more surprised by how attractive he finds her. After several attempts, she agrees to a meeting. Little did she know that in the process of getting to know her father, she would fall in love with Dylan Talbot. Dylan tries to deny his feelings for Callie, but he just can't stay away from her. She is unlike any woman he has ever known. Things couldn't be going any better for them until Callie finds out about a secret, a secret that breaks her heart and drives her away from Dylan. In the meantime, Warren Sherbrooke has announced to the world that he has a daughter and now the press are having a heyday with the story and Callie has no privacy. Can she survive her broken heart and her new found yet unwanted fame? Will Dylan realize that he loves Callie, and if he does, can he win her back?

This is a charming contemporary romance. I loved Callie's character. She was very real and believable. Dylan Talbot was absolutely dreamy and swoon worthy, and the chemistry between him and Callie is undeniable. I enjoyed watching the story unfold and really enjoyed getting to know the characters. This was a delightful romance with a real life Cinderella feel to it that I found to be delightful. If you are fan of contemporary romance, then you will enjoy this lighthearted and entertaining story.

Things go bad when Callie finds out that Dylan has been hanging out with her to make sure she did not spill about being Warren's Daughter even though for him it was not about that. Their brother Jake (I know weird but he is half brother to both) convinces Dylan that Callie is not his ex and that he is in love with her, he realizes that he must fight for the woman he loves. It ends nicely with the couple marring and most of the family accepting her as family (except her sister Sara) and are happy for the two of them.

I love the character and plot development. The book was well paced and no point felt rushed or bogged down. The main characters were endearing felt instantly comfortable reading about them. The secondary characters added to the story especially Lauren Callie's best friend and Jake. I can't wait to see Jake find love.(less)

I have to admit I enjoy a good romance, and this qualifies as a pretty good romance, I would say. I can identify with Callie since she is a teacher (and so am I). Wow...I really liked it!
It was kept real...you could picture yourself actually there inside the book with the characters.
Truly a fun relax out in the sun on the beach read!
(Don't forget a hottie of your own to rub in some sunscreen!)

The writing was so nice, each scene , each character, worked great.
I think the realism of the places made the book so much better. Being able to pictured yourself on the "not dates" with Dylan and Callie were beyond fun.

What a sweet story! I loved so much about this book. I grew up in New England and barely have missed my time there until I read this book. Christina's words transported me back to all the places I loved to visit as a child. This story kept me interested. It is an enjoyable, weekend read. It is predictable, and I wish we saw more interactions among Callie and Sherbrookes, but I realize it is a romance between Callie and Dylan. It was a sweet romance. This was a First Reads giveaway book. I thought the story was cute. I liked Callie and Dylan. My only complaint is that I felt their relationship progressed too fast for reality. I have to admit that this is the first romance novel that I've read so maybe that is normal for the genre.

I didn't mind it, though I felt like there were huge gaps in the story. Also, in parts there was a good flow, but then... There wasn't.

The characters were ok, and I'm still tempted to read Jakes book - though I'm not sure if I'm happy to pay for it :/

Looking at it now, it was very hard to get invested in the stories and characters because of all the gaps. You kept getting thrown out of the story and wondering if you've missed a few pages.

this is the first book i have read by this Author, i loved this book it's an easy read, romance, i school teacher callie finds out her father is not died after her mother die's, live as she knows it will never be the same again, her fathers stepson dylan arrives to arrange father and daughter to meet up, it's love at first sight for both of them, but neither of them are ready to admit it to themselves, i read this book in 2 days just didn't want to put it done, i have downloaded book 2 already,...more
