While romance and erotica are not genres I normally read, I have to say that I enjoyed this story and neither the romance nor the erotica overwhelmed the story line. Still, it is a bit different to read a novel that induces a reaction south of the belt buckle.

Ms. Bundy has created a compelling, if somewhat dystopian, future in which corporations have superseded governments as the de facto rulers in North America, and humans have developed the skills necessary to summon daemons from Sheol. The story follows Meriwether Storm, a human woman and proficient summoner, with a rather large axe to grind. Seems that her parents were also summoners and, when Meri was young, summoned a daemon whom they could not control and so lost their lives in the process. Meri, it turns out, wants a little revenge.

Shortly after the instructive and gory beginning of the tale, Meri meets a sexy daemon named Azimuth, and, well, you'll just have to read the story to see where that thread goes. The rest of the story is one of personal evolution and self-discovery... with daemons thrown in for good measure. The daemons themselves seemed, largely, very much like humans in both appearance and motivations, but with magic-like powers and a proclivity for dining on strange foodstuffs, usually of human origin.

There was a bit of gender imbalance, as the male characters were weaker and less acutely drawn than the female characters: the four strongest-written characters were all female; however, this fits with the target audience of this novel. The story line wanders a bit, and there were places in which the narrative became sketchy; however, I enjoy stories that wander, so it was fine with me. The story ends satisfactorily with a daemonic erection and the set up for the sequel.

The Daemon Whisperer does not fail to deliver the gory, demon-munching-on-humans goods that demon paranormalists are seeking, but one must remember that the story is, at its heart, an erotic romance.(less)

The idea behind The Daemon Whisperer is a good one. In the future society is controlled by different corporations instead of governments. In this world live people who can summon daemons from Sheol (their world). Usually daemon summoners are short lived. Daemons are violent, demanding and tricky. Summoners must be careful with the wording they use and always be a step ahead or they will die in a painful manner. After every summoning the summoner is left with a new tattoo from the daemon dealt with. No one know what will happen if the summoner runs out of bare skin to be tattooed.

Meriwether has been summoning daemons for years. She is careful, but doesn’t expect to live out the year as she’s running out of bare skin. Early on in the book she is contacted by a handsome daemon who looks nothing like those she has dealt with in the past. He offers her an opportunity she can’t resist, assassinate an arch daemon and in return he will give her the name of the daemon wo murdered her parents. This prospect pulls her from all she’s ever known and introduces her to a world she never dreamed she’d be part of.

For the most part I enjoyed reading The Daemon Whisperer. Meriwether was straightforward. She knew what she wanted and went after it. She had realistic thoughts about the world and didn’t allow moral issues to prevent her from moving forward. She was ruled by a need to get revenge on the daemon who destroyed her family. As the book progressed she transformed from being a person who only relied on herself to trusting others to assist her. It was nice to see her grow.

The Daemon Whisperer is an urban fantasy novel with a strong romance storyline. The heroine finds love and companionship, as well as a completely new life and outlook on life. I only have a few criticisms to voice. One, toward the end of the book the editing is off. Extra words are used erroneously. For example, “Once of the other daemon hunters were incapacitated…”. That happens a few times.

I also felt like the story went on a few chapters too long. Instead of wrapping up the story it was like reading the first few chapters of a new book. We’re given a possibly life altering dilemma and a new violent situation, but not time to follow up. Had the story ended before those new things were introduced I would have been satisfied. Instead I felt like I missed something. The originality of The Daemon Whisperer kept me flipping pages and interested enough to pick up book two, The Madness Path, when it’s released. I’m hoping it will expand on some parts of the world building which are mentioned, but not explored.

I really liked the strong beginning, it immediately pulled me into the story and I already thought that this would be an awesome book. The story really was the strong point of this book, with so much happening and after one thing was resolved there was already something else. The pacing was a bit off at times, with some things happening a bit too fast and other going a bit too slow. Also I thought the ending of the book was a bit strange and I think an earlier ending would've been better, there was a point were I thought the ending would be and then realized there were some 30-40 pages more. So after that point there was a new problem introduced about which we hear more in the next book. I think this introduction would've fit better at the start of the next book.

Something that bothered me was the focus on lust instead of romance. In this book lust took a more prominent role than romance and even though I got that they were attracted to each other I didn't really feel their love, only later in the story there is more attention for the love aspect. Also I thought the sex scenes weren't that interesting or well done, just my opinion.

The characters are likeable, although I did feel at times I didn't really got to know them. I did like Meri and quite soon I got a good sense of who she was, but this wasn't the case with the other characters. They seemed a bit flat and I would've liked to see more of their personalities, motives and personal goals. Also Meri is the kind of stubborn character who thinks she knows what is best and makes a few mistakes because of that, but she did stay really true to her character. Also some descisions in the first part of the book are taken a bit too fast and this wasn't really believeable. Also it is mentioned often that meri is driven with vengeance, I didn't really feel this.

The world building is something I wish was done more elaborate. Only when I reached the glossary at the end did I understand when this story actually took place and a bit of what the Corporations actually are. So not only did the deamon part of the story lacked world building, also the human part did. Also we do get to know a bit about Deamons, but I still felt like there should've been more. What is hell like, how is it created, how are the deamons created, how many different type of main deamons are there (like lust and hate), what are the powers deamon can possess and what are the politics in the deamon rhealm are just a few of the question I was left with. The idea behind the world is really interesting and original, I just wished there was more world building so the world really would come alive.

To conclude: a really enjoyable story and I kept reading, because I wanted to know what would happen next. The side characters lacked a bit depth, but I did like the main character and got a good sense of who she is. There was a bit too much focus on lust and sex instead of romance and love, although at the end of the story this did get better. Also I think the book would've been better with more world building. The story is really good and even though I had some issues with this book I still really enjoyed it.(less)

OMW!! I loved this book! Every spare moment I had, my phone was out and this book was up! I just couldn’t put it down!

The narrative is very crisp, which really makes it easy for the story structural elements to rise and SHINE! And, oh man! Do they ever! I like Merri! She’s down to earth. I’ve lost sleep from reading it and yes I have even missed a meal, something that I don’t generally like to make a habit of doing because I can get really cranky. But even in my state of crankiness I still managed to keep my face plastered smack dab in front of my Nook. And there it stayed, off and on for two whole days. It would have been shorter, but I do have children that needed tending to every once and awhile.

Meriweather Storm has followed the path of her murdered parents by becoming a daeomon summoner and is one of the best there is. She takes on jobs because she hopes that one day she will be able to avenge her parents death, by finding their killer. She summons daemons and binds them to do what she asks of them. Once the daemon is bound, the daemon’s ink sets into the Summoner’s skin. The daemon then completes the task that the Summoner asks of it. It could be a simple task such as extracting information, or a more lethal one such as murder. Once completed the daemon returns to Sheol, the equivalent of Hell.

There is a war in Sheol that humans are not aware of. Meri has been approached by four daemons to assist them with an assassination of an infatuation Arch-daemon named Makrha. In order to bind the daemon to her, Makhra will need to become intimate with her. If she is successful in killing him then she will be given the name to her parent’s killer. Even under these extremely embarrassing circumstances how can she refuse their offer?

The binding proves difficult because in the beginning Meri is not enchanted with the daemon, even as handsome as he is. So Makhra takes an image from her mind, of the one that she has started to form a dangerous attraction to, the daemon Azimuth. Over six feet tall, lanky but muscular, with silvery blond hair and ice blue eyes; he is perfection. He is unlike any other daemon that she has met and she begins to form feelings for him. And so Makhra transforms into Azimuth’s image.

But what happens after this seductive binding will completely alter her life; and so a wonderfully, brilliant paranormal fantasy filled with romance and adventure begins. You will fall in love with these characters, especially the four daemons: Azimuth, Orias, Kobol and yes even that big blue guy with horns Belial (who has that distinctive voice of Tim Curry in my head). Meri is a strong and determined lead character, but we also see a vulnerable and fragile side to her. I don’t like my heroines completely gritty and hard. They have to have a balance and the author did a wonderful job with Meri’s character.

I fell in love with this exotic, dystopian society and the humans and daemons that lived in it. The pace of the story is fast and there is never a shortage of action. I found myself wanting to know more about the corporation and how the world turned out the way it did and how the history of the Summoners began. This exotic world was very captivating and I was curious to learn more about it.

There is certainly a good amount of heat in the sexual content of the story, but it wasn’t overly spicy, but it was certainly for the 18+ crowd. I think readers will be very pleased with the relationship that builds between the two main characters and the internal conflicts and obstacles that they must overcome.

Focusing on the concern etched around her brown eyes, it was all too tempting to pull her back into his arms and kiss away her fears. Could Meri’s heat withstand his icy touch?

The story is quite intricate and absorbing. But what happens if we forget what a Summoner is, or have questions regarding what a sigil may be? Well, no worries. Let’s just mosey on over to the back of the… GLOSSARY page! Have I said how much I love this book? Although convenient, one does not really need to utilize it as the book was very well explained in its entirety. In fact I hadn’t discovered it until I got to the very end. But it’s there if you need it.

So, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and number two can’t get here soon enough!

We start with a strong, egocentric, angsty heroine that hates daemons as they are killers (and they did kill her parents). The plot was a nice mystery: she is offered a job by daemons in exchange for the name of her family's killer.

As usual when dealing with daemons nothing is as it seems and she loses all. (Can't say too much, can I? :) And here started my troubles.

As a way to force her character (and the reader) into a love story, the author chooses to bind her to one of the daemons (is a consequences of one of their lies). And the character coherence went downhill. In the first 25% of the book a woman who hates daemon, has been lied and betrayed by them to the point of having her life destroyed (literally), has now no problem in trusting them .She never fights them. (Edit: she fights the others, never the ones she is "working"for). She changes to the point that she says she has "misunderstood" the hero as he has always looked after her.

At this point I wasn't sure if I was reading the same book. I went back and re-read some part. No way I found this care. He is the one who lied to her and kept doing it too. He is responsible for her condition and the fact she is a "prisoner" (as she had no choice).
I kept wondering if it was a ruse to control her and maybe she would have realized it later. Nope, she takes the martyr way for him too. (And let's not talk of this part...)

So this is a 4 star book for the action scenes, the mystery plot and the gritty future, and less than a 2 star one for the romantic subplot.

I'm really disappointed, I had expected so much from this book.(less)

I woke up at what I thought was 4ish in the morning, but was really 3ish because of daylight savings time, and couldn’t go back to sleep. My mind started nagging me about how I needed to read the book. My next thought was, “Man I hope it doesn’t suck. Those take forever to read and I don’t have the time.” So I wander out to the couch as not to disturb the sleeping bear making the call of his species in the bed next to me. I am pretty sure I read for a straight 4 hours before my little monster decided he wanted to get up. I was zooming through this book at the speed of light because thankfully, this book rocks!

We have a new concept of using daemons for humans bidding. So if they want to enact a revenge on someone, a certain person from an elite group called a Summoner, would use their knowledge to bind the daemon to them for the task. They would then give the daemon a “payment” of some sort (which quite frankly can be gross!) When the binding is completed, the Summoner has daemon ink that pops up on their skin. If the binding is botched at all, the worst that can happen happens with the Summoner’s death. So keep in mind that little tidbit and then let me tell you what fuels Meri’s everyday goals. She is on a personal mission of revenge for her parents’ death after they were killed by a bad binding when she was 15 years old. It doesn’t matter how many daemons she summons, she can’t for the life of her find out who the culprit is. And she is running out of available skin for her daemon ink. No one has ever lived long enough to find out what happens when you run out of space on your skin. Well a series of events happens involving a group of daemons, and one specifically that captures and keeps her attention, that enables her to have her parents’ killer in the palm of her hand. And boy, the other stuff that goes on throughout this whole time is just too juicy to divulge. I will say though, a certain daemon named Azimuth makes me change my perception of what a daemon is in the book. And he’s damn sexy!

I am so happy that I had the opportunity to be able to sink my teeth into this new series and author. It was more than I expected and all the elements makes the storyline come together beautifully to create a captivating world. I do however have one complaint…I want to read the next in the series now! Lol.

Watching her grow from a wary, reserved person to someone who could trust in others was extremely satisfying.

Pair that with a whole new take on daemons and I was hooked. Perhaps it's because I'm so new to the UF genre, but this is the first book I've read that really deals with daemons and the way that they operate. The line that Bundy walks between beauty and brutality is truly wonderful. Meri's interactions with the other side really give the reader a look into why things end up where they ultimately do. There is a whole new world build in this book, and I enjoyed every minute of it.

Really, if Meri had just continued right on being a bad-ass daemon dealer I would have been perfectly okay with it. What threw the book into a tailspin for me was the romantic subplot. We have a woman whose parents were viciously murdered by a daemon. A woman who makes it her job to keep these entities away from her and under her control. Then, all of the sudden, one walks into her life that has her head over heels in lust. This just felt forced to me, and not believable at all. Don't get me wrong, I liked Azimuth. It's just that the two of them together didn't seem to make sense.

I also had no idea that there were heavy erotic scenes in the story. While these didn't really affect my reading at all, I do think it's important to note to others who might want to give this series a shot. The line between UF and PNR in The Daemon Whisperer is very thin. I'm a fan of sex in my books (if it's done well), but if you're not you might be turned off by Meri's very interesting talents. That's all you'll get from me. No spoilers! Just be warned that there is sex and it is sizzling.

So there you have it. I wavered for a long time on what to give this first book in The Liminals Series. Despite any issues, The Daemon Whisperer was a read I ultimately enjoyed. I'm looking forward to seeing where Meri's story takes her next, and how much more she grows in her new role. The world that Candice Bundy has built is tantalizing and I'm fairly certain I'm in for the long haul.(less)

Unique, edgy book. Candice Bundy is in a league of her own -- there aren't a lot of urban fantasy authors brave enough to tackle this kind of story. Nonstop action and adventure, which I loved. The erotic-romance component of the story isn't really my "thing," but the intrigue of her dark, daemonic world is compelling enough to bring me back for the sequel.

Candice Bundy tackles urban fantasy with lots of ambition and twists in her post-modern world setting (dark and exciting) with enough challenges in it without any of the fantasy (lots of stories to be told about the Corporate Sector take over, the collapse of governments, the return of the pioneer spirit for many, etc.). I must say, when I started to read this novel I was a bit worried. It had a bit of a slow start, but when the storyline began to pick up it exploded. It went from ‘meh’ to awesomeness in the turn of a page.

This book was quite interesting when it started. The heroine, Meri, was hardened, experienced, and strong. The book takes place in either the future or an alternate and somewhat dystopian Denver. The book leads off with a gory first chapter, Meri witnesses a summoning gone bad. Usually I would stop reading the book at that time (too much gore) but the author's writing has me intrigued. She created a post apocalyptic world where daemons are the source of knowledge and vengeance. Meri is a strong willed character. She has been a summoner since she was young. I really liked this book. It had a gritty quality that I really enjoyed. I always like those deteriorating civilization stories and this was right up that alley, with an oppressive government, and deamons slaughtering people.

I really liked this book. Meri’s back story makes her for a great leading lady. I loved watching her roll with the punches she is dealt throughout the book. This book is packed with action. I have to say after reading the first few pages of this one, I wasn't quite sure if this was going to be the read for me.

It was a little gritty and okay, some parts were just down right disgusting to read and had me cringing and thankful I hadn't just eaten but, I hung in there. Morbid curiosity maybe? Masochism? I don't know but either way, I stuck with it and kept on reading.

Meri was such an interesting character. Full of wanting revenge for her parent's death but also wanting to be good and do the right thing and help those that really needed helping.

She was a little broken and even though she knew what she wanted out of life when it came to actually living and having a life, she was lost and desperately trying to find her way. When she is thrown into a whole new world, one she knew little about and one she certainly didn't want to be a part of she actually handles it well and handles it like everything else in her life, she moves forward and tries to fix it. But this time, she can't fix it. And so, her story begins.

I wasn't expecting the romance to be so steamy in this either and that sort of threw me too, not that I don't like a good steamy romance but, I don't know. It just took me by surprise I guess. Maybe because it has a little more heat than I was expecting, I think I have read so many YA books lately that I came into this one thinking along those lines, this is definitely not a YA read.

I wish there would have been a little more world building. You really don't get a great feel for what the world Meri is leaving in is like. Instead it focuses more on Meri herself, her new friends and what she is capable of doing and a little of her past.

I am hoping the next book will rectify that a little and give me a little more.

Overall this was a good read though. One very different from ones I have been reading and I would be willing to take a look at the next book and see where the author takes the story next.

A very interesting and different read for this here book junkie! As I was reading it I was reminded of two of my favorite series of all time which are Laurell K. Hamilton’s Anita Blake series and Lilith Saint Crow’s Jill Kismet series; action, excitement, adventure, paranormal elements galore and romance that all feed the imagination to bursting. This book had me worried when I started it, it felt a bit clumsy and I couldn't quite figure out why, but once it got rolling I completely forgot about the awkward beginning and settled in for what turned out to be a great adventure. OVERVIEW/ANALYSIS: In regards to Candice Bundy’s The Daemon Whisperer, I was alerted to its existence by Steven Montano’s blog. I am a fan of his dark fantasy-thrillers and also his picks in regards to books have been along the same lines as my interests. Plus the book blurb promised a post-apocalyptic world wherein daemons are now present and can be summoned to our plane of existence. This book seemed to be a urban fantasy version of The Warded Man/The Painted Man. Therefore I was excited to see where the author would take the story and how she would develop the world. The author provided me with a reviewer's copy based on my inquiry.

Meriwether Storm is a daemon summoner who has become one due to the death/murder of her parents at the hands of one such daemon. She however doesn’t know which daemon caused this tragedy but she will do everything she can to find out its name. Every daemon summoner gets tattooed with the daemon’s sign/sigil and there haven’t been many with the amount of script that Meri has acquired. She however is still nowhere near to finding the name of her parent’s killer. Things soon take a weird turn as a daemon cabal approaches her with a potential job offer in turn for giving her the name she so fervently desires. What happens next is what readers will have to find out by reading the book.

The best part of the story is its fast pace and slightly twisted storyline; the author does her best to write a story that manages to bridge the storyline from its post-apocalyptic roots into the thriller components of the story. However the biggest surprise for me was the higher content of paranormal romance in this storyline than I expected. The story I felt had a great chance to showcase a gritty world, which has been changed irrevocably after the apocalypse and the presence of the Daemons on our plane of existence. However the author manages to sidestep this world-building front and focuses only on the story and the interaction between the main POV characters and reveals the truth about the Liminals. The book also has a great cover done by Amber Shah.

The author does write competently and also includes a touch of wryness to the proceedings and makes this tale much lighter than I would have expected. The story however doesn’t shy away from action and in the latter half of the book we do get some terrific action-oriented proceedings that help in setting up a terrific climax. Also I’m not a fan of PNR-heavy storylines and so this turn of events was one, which I didn’t particularly enjoy. Readers who enjoy PNR stories will find this turn to be a good one and one that is handled as classily as possible. I’m not an expert on sex scenes and so take my opinion on this detail of the story with a huge grain of salt. Lastly I would have loved to see more about the post-apocalyptic world and so I will be reading the next book to see whether the author expands the world on this front.

Candice Bundy has written the story, which she had planned to write. I perhaps had different expectations based on the blurb and that curtailed my enjoyment of this book. I think this is a good urban fantasy book but that which focuses on some things that I derive very little enjoyment from. This book is more leaning towards the paranormal romance subgenre than towards the urban fantasy subgenre. So be warned before you jump in to this book. This is however a good start to an interesting series and should be a book that should be enjoyable for readers of Nalini Singh and Jeanine Frost.(less)

I won this book in a Good-reads giveaway. This book leads you into the strange worlds of humans and daemons while showing the interaction between the two. This story is a fantastic mix of mystery suspense and romance which will be a great read for all adults who like the combination of paranormal and reality.I love how this book takes and makes the characters face what they dread most which is each other. I recomend this book to anyone who is mature enough in age and likes a great read.

Candice Bundy

Right into the action, with interesting characters, mystery, and a background story of future dystopia that is yet to be fully revealed. All this and sexy daemons, the ultimate "bad boys", I'm all in, and await the next part of the story.
