In the last years of the 1970's I was involved with the Hare Krishna movement. If for some reason you weren't, this is the book that will tell you what you missed. After leaving the movement I wrote a memoir about it which I put in a box in my closet and mostly forgot. The Life And Times Of Bhakta Jim is based on that old manuscript, with new commentary that tries to look ...more

The Life and Times of Bhakta Jim is an account of the Jim's experience within the Hare Krishna cult. The story is informative, but dry at times as some true stories can be. I learned a lot from his account though.

My only issue was Jim's dig at Republicans on several occasions. This was both unnecessary and off topic. I found that when he threw this in he took away from the story and got on his soap box.

Reading this book took me back to my encounters with hare krishnas some 40 years ago.I give credit to Bhakta Jim for escaping from the cult and rejoining the real world. He vividly illustrates the perils of surrendering one's will to supposedly more advanced beings. ISCON is a fraud which takes advantage of seekers after knowledge and tries to turn them into shills for their phony religion.

I am having a problem getting the book to fully display each page which does not center. There is a big gap at the top of each page and the words at the bottom of the page don't display!

I think it may be a good book but this is frustrating.

“I resigned myself to the fact that the only way I would get Mishrani out of the movement was to deprogram her. It was a terrifying prospect. There were very real risks that it could go wrong and I could wind up in jail, or worse, Mishrani could end up hating me for the rest of her life.

There was no way around it, though. It was a thing that needed doing, and I was just the guy to do it.”
