Epic Sci Fi blended with Religion

Hannah, Makenzie, Jeremy, and Derek have lived underground in a refuge, hiding from “The Great Ones” who have enslaved humanity. They’ve never seen a star studded sky, smelled the wild tang of outside air, or met the enemy. The leaders have sheltered them for so long, Jeremy and Makenzie don’t believe the world has been taken over, and they steal the key to the elevator, leading Hannah and Derek on a dangerous adventure they’ll never forget.

What do you get when you put LDS church members in a battle with aliens bent on taking over the planet? You get a fast paced story with well developed characters and a great plot.

Defenders of the Covenant by Angie Lofthouse is written from several points of view. We see the story as told by four teens that leave the compound and face the enemy outside. Hannah, who leaves to protect her best friend Mackenzie. Jeremey who defies authority to see the outside world, and Derek who goes along to keep...more

I’m not a big fan of Sci-fi but the first chapter of Angie Lofthouse's Defenders of the Covenant pulled me in because of the characters. I was curious about the reason McKenzie’s relationship had changed with Hannah and it made sense when it was revealed. I also liked that Hannah didn’t share Derek’s interest in her. Imperfect characters with their own set of problems.
The world-building was interesting and the use of ‘overskins’ especially effective. I found the pig-like aliens a mixture of t...more

First off, I have to say I was a little worried about the premise of this book. An alien story with religious ideals.

But I love Angie and would read anything of hers because she's a gifted artist.

I was not disappointed.

Angie knows storytelling. She understands characters, plot, description, storyline, pacing etc etc. I had a hard time putting this book down.

The story centers around four teenagers who leave the safety of their underground home and are abducted by the aliens that destroyed the E...more

Know your audience.

That was the phrase that kept popping into my head as I read Defenders of the Covenant by Angie Lofthouse. Why? Because early on, it became quite clear this was an LDS Sci-Fi book, in contrast to a Sci-Fi book written by an LDS author.

Lofthouse has unapologetically ingrained into the book cultural references, practices and traits of the LDS religion. In my opinion, the elements of faith, prayer and forgiveness are as important to the story as the Sci-Fi elements.

I state this...more

Whatever you may think this book will be about - it just might surprise you. The first thing that dragged me in was the uniqueness of the story and how the author was making no apologies for that. The story is what it is, and it really works. I immediately found myself wondering about the possibility of alien invasions and how they would effect the workings of the LDS church.

And then, before I knew it had happened, the actual workings of the plot had me hooked. This is SUCH an interesting story...more

As a fan of Angie’s short stories, I immediately knew I wanted to read her first published novel, and I wasn’t disappointed—I loved it!

Like her short works, Angie has written Defenders of the Covenant with clarity, demonstrating her understanding of the principles of writing, including but not limited to: plot, character arc, action, setting, emotion, and grammar. Because of her mad skills, my eyes flowed over the words and ate them up.

Defenders of the Covenant is an easy book to recommend beca...more

It never would have occurred to me to write a novel about aliens and Mormons, so this book was . . . intriguing. Sometimes I cringe when I read novels by LDS authors set in an LDS world because the dialogue tends to be a bit cheesy at times, and it seems like characters are always praying. But, it's a true reflection of Mormon culture; however, seeing the culture outside of my own sphere is always a little strange.

I enjoyed the overall concept of the novel, especially having Armies-of-Helaman-es...more

Defenders of the Covenant is a truly unique book. It is the first book that I have read that could be labeled as, LDS Science Fiction. The main characters are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday-Day Saints(LDS) who are trying to survive in a world that has been taken over by aliens. So that is where you get the genre label of, LDS Science Fiction. There are some very cool and unique ideas found in this story. The action is fast paced. You are seeing action from all parts of the co...more

I was not sure about this book at first because aliens and I don't get along. I prefer to not think about whether they do or do not exist :-). Once I got into this book I really liked the story! I enjoyed the writing, the only thing I would have liked (something I have enjoyed from other books) was when each chapter is written in one persons pov and labeled accordingly. But that is just personal preference.

IT WAS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!! I loved it so much! It is a great book for 10 and older. It is my FAVORITE BOOK IN THE WORLD! I love fantasy and Mormon fantasies so this was awesome to me. Hannah was my favorite character because I could relate to her the most. Angie Lofthouse is my favorite author now and I hope she writes more. This is a very moving story and you should definitely read it!!!!!!!!

I really liked this book, as did my daughter. It is the story of four young people who are living underground in a refuge along with many other people. Two of the people decide that they are going to leave and the other two young people try to stop them. After the four of them leave the refuge, they are captured by invaders of Earth. It was a very interesting book.

Can I just start with saying, I don't like aliens, I don't like sci-fi and honestly, I didn't honestly think I would enjoy this book knowing that it involves both of those things.

So know that when I say I LOVE THIS BOOK, I really mean it!

I was hooked immediately, when I picked the book up, there was no putting it down until I finished.
From the very first page it was action packed, heart pumping, tear jerking adventure.
I would specifically point out some of my favorite characters but honestly...more

I enjoyed this book. It is full of LDS doctrine and faith-promoting scenes. For those of us who have read about some of the modern-day prophecies of the last days, some of the scenarios have a familiar ring to them. This book will give those who are convinced that the Second Coming will probably be within the next 100 years something to reconsider.

This book, which was released today, was very highly recommended to me as a great sci-fi book that also featured a lot of LDS ideas. I'm not much of a sci-fi reader, but I thought I'd pass the recommendation along to those of you who are!

I love it kept me wanting more. Im not a sci-fi fan, but this book was great. Thought it was interesting how she blended the teachings of the LDS church with the alien invasion. Great story!

Well developed characters in trying situations. Great American tale of struggle and adaptation, I enjoyed seeing the main characters grow. Very good flow and steady building pace.

I usually stay away from sci fi, but this was a good book and a fun read. I will for sure read the sequels to this one. Great author!

Angie did an awesome job at blending SF with an LDS world. I loved her characters--she did an excellent job of conveying their emotions. I also really enjoyed her descriptions--beautiful and poetic.

I thought the alien culture was interesting, especially when it came in contact (and clashed) with the humans' culture. Loved the Native American aspect--especially Toovuts and the role he plays.

Overall, one of the best books I've read this year. :)

Super fun read! Lots of action and suspense - many "skin tingling" moments - even a few tears here and there. Definitely a page turner! Loved all of the characters SO MUCH (except Jeremy, who I H.A.T.E.D!! lol) So looking forward to the next one.
