The place is Oakland. The year is 2004.

Reader's Paradise
California Dreaming?

Heart-breaking and thought provoking, with a backdrop of sunny California against the sometimes gloomy stories we're presented. These stories deal with a love that has no name, child sexual trafficking, and memories of abuse that fester and grow into the adults we become. There are tales that reveals the darker side of humanity, and the self we try to deal with at times in our life, but healing only comes when we're able to move forward, not forgetting but always carrying a...more

I received a copy of this book from the author himself, in exchange for a review, and although I wouldn't normally read a book like this, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The story is a collection of short stories that is based on the Oakland sex trade. The characters that novella focuses on are Cherise, Shanice, Ed, Doris, and Diamond; each character is facing hard times, and you truly feel bad for them. This novella was very depressing, but somehow at the end of each story each character found the lig...more

Pure Grit and a Glowing Talent

Elton Loud writes with more grit and passion and grim reality than is easily described without reading this short story novella - LITTLE GIRLS. The substance of each the short stories in this compact and pungent collection is about sex trade in Oakland, California, and while he manages to conjure the sights and smells and idiosyncrasies that abound in this city across the bay the from San Francisco, place is not nearly as important as the messages that emerge from t...more

Little Girls is a compilation of short stories that all share a common denominator - the sex trade. The characters in the storys connect in some fashion with another story, which really brings everything full circle.

From the ravaged grieving prostitutue turned lawyer Cherise to the young Shanise, a victim of the sex trade and an evil pimp called KT, the gritty and raw writing will hold you in it's grip. From the elderly man who uses his Bible as his crutch while surfing for porn and meeting the...more

The Other World

“Little Girls: A Short Story Novella” by Elton Loud is an intriguing and devastating novel that contains a few short stories with emphasis on sexual abuse of our young girls. It seems that many of the trials and tribulations of the past have reoccurred in an unbroken cycle.

“Little Girls: A Short Story Novella” is well written. I liked the fourth story, ‘10-500.’ I was totally confused at the beginning, but the author gave information to help me understand the meaning of the main...more

I wish this book had been longer, because when I got to the end of it I was thinking, oh no, it can't be over that fast! It's a collection of short stories, some of them are connected because you will see one character in another story, and there are two different stories which share one scene (told from two different POV's) Overall it's a good collection of short stories, though I did notice a few typos here and there (only a few, the kind that spellcheck doesn't catch) and it did not really in...more

I discovered “novellas” last year and I find them to be just the “snack” I need between books. I saw Little Girls: A Short Story Novella on my friend Literary Marie’s blog and decided to add it to my Kindle. Once I pulled it out of the cloud, I soon found out Little Girls was a big girl book.

Little Girls was a series of six very different short stories yet the author managed to connect them all. There was no “feel good” story in the group. Each story deals with real issues and circumstances tha...more

Disclosure: The author, Elton Loud, was kind enough to send me a copy of his book for review after I had expressed interest.
More accurate rating: 3.5 stars

Little Girls is a short story novella about the intersecting lives of individuals involved in prostitution in Oakland CA. My favorite story of the collection was "The Things We Forgot to Say" with "Hopping John," and "11-500" rounding out my top 3.

The strength of this collection is its authenticity. I was particularly impressed with the dead...more

I won this book from goodreads. It was easy to read. I sat down and read it in about an hour and a half. the stories flowed well. The chapter 11-500 did have a little bit of a confusing aspect, the flow from present to past back to present was a little confusing until I figured out what was going on. I like how the stories all connected in some way. I don't know yet if I want to read the entire novel, but I think this was good and would not discourage anyone from reading it. It is not a happy go...more

[2012-04-12] My has arrived :o)
[2012-05-29] Finished this book after cutting the grass, sitting in the sun. A review will follow. I think I'm going to need to cogitate on this one before I write the review. It leaves one with lots about which to think. There is a longer version of this book - I'm tempted to look for it; the book is not uplifting, but contains many important truths.
Thank you to Elton for providing this book hrough Goodreads First Reads competition.
