For Princess Alyrra, choice is a luxury she’s never had … until she’s betrayed.

Princess Alyrra has never enjoyed the security or power of her rank. Between her family’s cruelty and the court’s contempt, she has spent her life in the shadows. Forced to marry a powerful foreign prince, Alyrra embarks on a journey to meet her betrothed with little hope for a better future.

This novel is one of the few that have left me divided. On one hand, it’s too intense, too emotionally grueling for my taste. I wanted the heroine, Princess Alyrra (aka Thorn), to have a respite, to have something working for her, but the author wouldn’t oblige. So in my head, I argued with her. I told her that she was wrong to subject Thorn to so many indignities. I told her that the test she devised for her hero, Prince Kestrin, was unfair and unnecessary cruel. I told her that Thorn behaved f...more

Wow. I was not expecting to be this swept up in the tale - I could not put it down and read the whole thing in one go, to the detriment of some sleep. So if this review rambles a bit, it's all because I stayed up all night reading.

I guess I should start with the unexpectedness - I found out about this book on Facebook as it was published by a high school classmate of mine. This was the only reason I went to look at in on Amazon and as soon as I saw that it was a fantasy genre I decided, why not...more

The Cover
I'm torn with this cover. On the one hand I think the background is pretty it kind of reminds me of a surrealist painting with the two different landscapes fading into eachother and the somewhat creepy eyes at the top. On the other hand there is a pretty girl at the front. You know how I feel about (real) people on covers. For a selfpublished book, the cover looks pretty professional though.

I found this book whilst I was on Goodreads a few months back. It sounded very interesting and the idea intrigued me so much that I had requested the book from the author. The author then told me that I could do the book review on the day of the new cover reveal and I thought it sounded like a great idea, so here I am!
I actually liked the old cover of the book, but completely love this one. It's so catchy! The synopsis as well was very intriguing and so was the choice of title.

The author's style...more

I thoroughly enjoyed Thorn. I usually go into a book fairly blind, and since I received Thorn so long ago, I didn't remember it was a fairy tale retelling of The Goose Girl.

I became attached to Princess Alyrra very quickly -- within the first pages -- and that's why I enjoyed the story so much. She gets betrothed to a prince from a far away land, and on the way there, her nasty companion uses magic to change places with her!

I think the twist is that Alyrra doesn't mind becoming a common, relativ...more

This is a beautifully and lyrically written book, based on the fairy tale of the Goose Girl. The heroine, Alyrra, is the princess of a small country. Her brother, heir to the throne, is a sadist and a bully, and her mother, the Queen, is at best indifferent to her. Her closest friends are the palace servants. The king of a neighboring country, far bigger and more important than Alyrra's, chooses Alyrra as the wife for his son Kestrin, the crown prince.

Alyrra's mother insists that she be accompa...more

I love the "Goose Girl" story and the novels that do a spin of off this tale. When I read the description after it was recommended by one of the authors I follow I decided to give it a go. It did not disappoint. Our heroine, Thorn, has the humility and good grace that is seldom seen in this world and it makes her character extremely likeable. I found myself cheering her on when she continued to be opptimistic and hopeful in a world filled with danger and justice was a mere farce. I would have ra...more

When I first accepted this book for review, I had never read the Grimm's "Goose Girl" tale it was based off of. So I used this magical thing we call the internet and read it before reading Thorn. I have to say, while Thorn followed the tale very closely excluding names, I enjoyed it nonetheless--so much that I couldn't put it down. This book isn't just a take on a Grimm tale, but it also covers topics not usually found in something of such a "light" nature. Physical abuse and murder were both ad...more

For Alyrra, the idea of an arranged marriage was a dream that couldn't be anything worse than the life that she was already living. In a home where she feared her family and was disrespected at every turn, an unknown husband couldn't be any worse in her eyes. But when the King of Menaiya comes to her kingdom to bid for her hand in marriage in lieu of his son, things just don't add up for her. The king is almost too kind and wants to k...more

“Wow” is a good term to describe Thorn, debut YA fantasy novel by author Intisar Khanani. This book certainly left me in awe. That said, head over to Amazon now and get your free copy of Thorn. The free action is only from June 25th to June 28th, so get your copy now, because you don’t want to miss out on this one.

Thorn tells the story of the Goose Girl, a well-known fairytale I read a couple of times when I was a kid but never enjoyed that much. I mean, it was enjoyable, but I had other fairyta...more

This was really a fantastic read! The story itself was enchanting, magical. I have not read a Fantasy story in a while, so this was pretty refreshing. Princess Alyrra is around fifteen, and she is different from what a Princess should be. She keeps to her self, does not get along well with her Mother, especially her brother, whom is pretty mean to her (we get hints on his actions towards her). She spends some of her time in the outdoors, or with the servants. But...then a King from a nearby King...more

When I first started this book I was immediately worried. The narration was hard to sink into and I felt having it told in first person/present tense was often very jarring. It annoyed me and I was having a really hard time enjoying it. It felt like the story wasn't flowing and I expected it wouldn't be long before I gave up on it out of irritation.

But I couldn't. I tried and I couldn't. Despite having a hard time getting into the writing, the story itself kept me glued. I absolutely positively...more

This is the first time I'm participating in a blog tour and I'm so excited! There's a guest post by the author (Intisar Khanani) to come in a few days, but today, I just want to share my review of Thorn.

Thorn is a retelling of the Goose Girl fairytale. You know, the one with the talking horse called Falada? Well, before Thorn, the only other retelling I read was The Goose Girl by Shanon Hale. Well, both of this stories are different, but similar in the sense that they are both excellent reads.

This is one of the most rambley reviews I've written, apologies for the sporadic thoughts.

This book surprised me with how good it really was. I wasn't too sure about it at the start, but as I read along I found myself getting more and more swept up in the tale.

I'd never read the story of the Goose Girl, so this was new territory for me, (though I did look up the Grimm's version on Google) and I greatly enjoyed this version of it. It was well thought out and elaborated, and the two main character...more

I loved this book, absolutely loved it. It’s an object lesson for me, actually, in not pre-judging a book, because this one ticks so many of my ‘no’ boxes: it’s YA, it’s a fairy-tale retelling, it’s first person present tense (“I back away...”, “I gaze at him”), it’s more or less a romance, it’s about a princess who doesn’t quite fit in, it has villains with no redeeming characteristics. Had I known all that beforehand, I would never have touched it and I would have missed a lovely, lovely story...more

Princess Alyrra is not sure why the King from a much bigger Kingdom has arrived to her family's castle. She's much too busy most of the time, what with trying to escape from her brother's violence and avoiding her mother's coldness and pretty much any other member of the court, all of which seem to hate her. So she simply assumed the King was there for some political reason. And, as she quickly finds out, he technically is... but it involves her. She is to marry his son, a man she has never seen...more

I never know what to expect from a CreateSpace book…it is a crap shoot to be sure. Well I have to say I was shocked when I picked up this book just to give it a few pages(I like to do this with new books to see what they are about and so forth) and didn’t put it down until I finished it. I wanted to know what would happen to Thorn and the princess and the kingdom and the curse and the ….. Wow, and again wow!
Though the book description sounds like this book will be your run of the mill Prince meets Princess, golden-heart Princess saves the Prince, and they live happily ever after. Not even close. It sounds that way at the start but soon, the twists and turns in the story will caught you off guard with its depths and truths.
The heroine’s (Princess) appeal and strength lies both on her lack/flaws (depends on who you ask) and her desire for a new path in life as she displays very uni...more

I absolutely loved this book! It is confidently narrated, easy to read, well paced and downright beautifully written. Vivid descriptions and a kingdom you can get lost in. It's based off of a fairytale and, while the characters are deep and 3-dimensional, the story itself retains a bit of that fairytale feeling, which is perfect! I felt like I was watching a written version of "Ever After" (Drew Berrymore, anyone?)

The main character, Alyrra, is a flawed and imperfect princess. She is cursed to...more

I really enjoyed this retelling of the goose girl. It was well written and pretty well edited. The prose flowed nicely as well as the story. The main character, Alyrra, I found to be a realistic character. She has her flaws but grows through the book and learns to be stronger. The reader sees Alyrra work to correct her faults; she identifies them and the solution for next time. By the end of the book she is still not perfect but the reader can see a visible difference in her character. Most of t...more

Thorn is a about a young princess coming to terms with the reality of an arranged married. She has realised that she is nothing more than a bargaining chip for her mother, but understands that it is her duty to do what she can to ensure the safety and well-being of her countrymen, even if that means accepting the hand of a prince that she has never met and the unknown life that awaits her in the far off capital city of a powerful king. But there are forces in play that she doesn't understand and...more

I was lucky enough to win Thorn as a First Reads Book through Goodreads. The story is about Princess Alyrra, who is being forced to marry a prince from the larger neighboring country. She meets The Lady, an enemy of the prince, who uses her magical powers to switch Alyrra’s appearance with that of her evil lady-in-waiting. When Alyrra arrives to the palace, the king makes her the Goose Girl. She comes to be known as Thorn. By her side is Falada, who is from a race of ancient beings that look lik...more

After the first couple of chapters of Thorn I wondered why I had only stumbled across this book on one other blogger site. Thanks to that blogger - sadly I can't remember who it was! - I bought this for my kindle several months ago.

The opening pulled me into the story immediately and I was interested to see how it would develop, especially as the book is based on the Grimm's tale The Goose Girl.

The author's writing is really smooth and easy to read, and I would have given this a higher rating if...more

I LOVED THIS BOOK. Just to get that out there. I picked it up and then had a hard time doing anything else. I wasn't sure at first about what seemed like one of the easiest ways to move a plot along the way you want it but can't figure out how to make your characters do it - the talking animal companion who know so much more than the primary char...more

I have to start this review by saying that this book really surprised me, mostly because the blurb is actually a terrible description of this book, and the actual story is totally different to what you expect having read the blurb!

Alyrra is a 15-year-old princess. Her father is dead, her mother is unkind to her, and her brother basically tortures her for fun.

This is a kind of book that will help you settle in comfortably and when you have, it will pull the rug under your feet. Yes, it’s like that. Unpredictable and tossing-turning. I like that!

I love the setting of the story (you must be knowing by now, how I go ga-ga over historical fiction). I fell in love with the character of Princess Alyrra. And the twists that the story throws are ah-mazing. Personally I am not much of a lover of fantasy and magic but they are just a part in this book...more

I loved this book!!

Great book with high fantasy, romance, danger, & adventure.

The romance between Alyrra & Prince Kestrin was not over the top. It's actually much more subtle than I normally read. I would've liked a little more romance. I don't mean sex scenes, I mean romance. There was plenty of build up, but (for me) it didn't go quite far enough.

Great character development and flowing story line.

I read the book in one day. I also cried like a baby. Before I purchased the book, I read...more

I love reformulated fairy tales, especially this one. I have read several different versions of “The Goose Girl” which is the tale this novel is based on. The author has taken this simple tale and turned it into a complex, moving novel. I am awed with how a writer can take something and make it so much better.

Alyrra is raised in a seriously dysfunctional household. Her brother physically abuses her, often leaving bruises or cuts. When the king from a neighboring kingdom comes to negotiate for a...more

This novel was part of a group read in my Goodreads group. I was provided with a free copy for this review.

I would like to start off by saying that this was a wonderfully written fairy tale! Although I’m not familiar with the original that Thorn is based on (The Goose Girl), I found it had all the elements required for a great tale. I was especially happy with ending because it was not your typical “Happy Ending”.. Things do turn out well in the end but it was far from the perfect princess marri...more
