Paulette Hamilton, fourth in the line of five girls born to Thomas and Genevieve Hamilton is at the forefront these days in carrying on the family business, and quite a businesswoman she is also proving to be. Thanks to the love of books she shares with her older sister Collette, along with the whole hearted support (and sometimes resistance) of her other sisters; Juliette, Lisette and Yvette, the Hamilton Book Shoppe is known by all who live in the Mayfair district of London. So successful is their shoppe in fact that plans are in place for the construction of a second store, the name of which Paulette holds in secret along with Collette! Although busy with thoughts of the new store, Paulette finds herself distracted by the serious looking dark-haired customer venturing out on a rainy August day and upon entering the shoppe, she discovers her new customer is also clasping the hand of a reluctant looking young girl. Paulette prides herself in what has thus far proven to be an accurate ability in sizing up people however; at the words uttered by her new customer, thoughts of danger cross her mind. The search for a book for his young daughter is the purpose in bringing the mysterious stranger to Hamilton’s Book Shoppe. Along with the habit of taking careful note of her customers (which she feels until now is with reasonable accuracy), Paulette also has the ability of knowing exactly what her customers want to read. Speaking to the shy little girl hiding behind her father’s pant leg Paulette leads the way to the area set aside for the youngest of Hamilton’s customers. Although gaining nothing other than shy smiles and nods of agreement in response to the questions directed at her newest customer, Paulette finds she is curious (which she also suffers with oftentimes to her own detriment), to know why the child does not speak, even when simply asked for her name. The intense response in which the child’s father delivers his daughter’s name draws Paulette’s attention to him once again. Upon closer scrutinizing, Paulette determines there is more to this man than she initially thought possible and the intense feelings he brings forth in his direct gaze leave her at a loss of reasoning why. Declan Reeves is a man with deep secrets and Paulette cannot help but feel somehow she is the only one who can uncover them and bring truth to light. Once again, Kaitlin O’Riley brings her readers a story filled not only the colorful cast of the Hamilton family, but new characters we cannot help but embrace in the telling of it!

Declan is a man haunted by his own past and rumors that he killed his first wife in a wife. This becomes the driving force behind Declan's actions to hide out in London with his daughter, and his reluctance to give Paulette the marriage she deserves.

This novel is fast-paced, and just as the attraction between Paulette and Declan is too sizzling to be ignored, so too do the threats come from the villain who seeks to frame Declan for his wife's death. The villain actually is fairly harmless until about the last quarter of the novel, and that's where things really pick up and Paulette regains her determination to help the man she loves.

I've read all of the Hamilton series to date, and this is sadly not one of my favorites. I've liked Paulette as a character since her appearance in the previous books, but the sister who was dubbed the "most sensible" actually becomes incredibly reckless in this novel. It's understandable that she would want a little adventure in her life even as she consigned herself to a spinster life, but she acts out of character so much in first part of this story with Declan that it's almost unbelievable she's the same Paulette in the previous books.

Declan, also, I had trouble with, because he constantly compared Paulette with his past wife even though it becomes clear from the onset that she's unlike any woman he's ever known, and far more different from his pampered ex-wife. He also does not act honorably as he knows he should, and has apparently no guilt sacrificing a woman's reputation and future for his own fleeting pleasure. This selfishness in character makes him less appealing as a hero.

Despite the character flaws, this book is still fairly enjoyable, and I recommend it as a fast read if you have time. (less)

Another great addition to the Hamilton Sister’s series. This story is about Paulette Hamilton who works at her family’s bookshop. She is a very strong and independent woman who has ambitions and goals. One of those goals is to open another bookshop. This was my first time reading Kaitlin O'Riley and I enjoyed her writing! Even though this is book four in a series about the Hamilton sisters, I did not feel left out and look forward to going back and reading their stories now. The story is not over fresh or unique but it felt like a nice comfort read. The relationship progressed nicely and the addition of Mara was well done and I really enjoyed watching her transform back into a vibrant young girl along with her close bond with her dad. I loved that the setting included a peek inside the workings of a bookstore! Declan is a handsome, solid Irish man and I think he was a wonderful balance to the quiet, smart Paulette. The addition of all the sisters and their families adds a real sense of warmth without taking away from the romance. I liked how the action plot and villain were spelled out rather quickly, that was a nice change of pace for me! It is always refreshing to see the evil plan unfold when you know who did what. Overall, a nice blend of family, romance, tenderness with dash of action. A nice treat for a cold winter day. I look forward to the final Hamilton sisters story!
