The title explains the contents of this book – 20 short pieces of writing that ranged from short stories to travel writing to essays. There is no explanation of how these particular pieces were chosen or why they were bundled together. There were stories in there that I think were chosen more for their subject matter than their prose (e.g. a story about the Haiti earthquake, a story about Muslims, an essay about abortion). Some of these were very good but I was disappointed in the collection. I didn't think they were great enough to be called the "Best" in any given year.

A nice collection of shorts. The standouts for me were "Magical Dinners," Chang-Rae Lee's story of his Korean-American family's transition into American culture, for better or worse, through food; Madge McKeithen's expertly-crafted "What Really Happened," about a painful event (I'll say no more); and "The Washing," Reshma Memon Yaqub's telling of her participation in the Muslim ritual of bathing a body in preparation for burial.
