Thrown by a Curve needed a curve ball, a fast ball, a slider, and most importantly, a changeup. The same ol', same ol' formula has gotten a bit tired. A couple of strikes but the series is not out yet. Final score: You really can't go wrong with books featuring the boys of summer!

Mmmm, I love me some Play by Play Series men. I get completely caught up in the characters Jaci Burton creates and I get hooked. I have loved every book in this series and each one is entertaining, easy to read, and super hot. I like that Alicia is confident and that Garrett is cocky and they both take their jobs and future seriosly. Simple plot. Almost too simple. It had it's hot moments towards the end, but I thought at one point there would be major drama up ahead, but nothing huge ever developed.

I would have liked to see some complexity of some sort...idk, something was missing. If you want a straight up, simple story without any angst, then this is it.

WAAAAHHHH! I'm so disappointed with this one! :( It makes me so sad. I've loved this series and I know you can't win them all but I wasn't ready to be disappointed yet. I just really thought it was boring. Not enough romance for me, not enough of the Riley family, and I just didn't really care enough about whether Garrett and Alicia got together.

Garrett’s bad attitude is holding back his rehab and keeping his goal of returning to pitch as a part of his team’s starting rotation out of his reach. Alicia, a physical therapist for Garrett’s baseball team, tells him straight up to get his head out of his ass and concentrate on his rehab. I kind of liked her a lot from that point on. Garrett knows he needs to shake things up and wants Alicia to lead his rehab and concentrate completely on him until the season starts and he’s back in the starting rotation. Working side by side means she goes where he does and that includes a weekend with his college roommates (more on them later) and down to spring training with the team and they get much closer than either of them intended.

I really liked Alicia from the beginning. She’s professional, she’s confident in her abilities and she knows without a doubt that she can work up a training plan to get Garrett back in top pitching shape. I enjoyed everything about her character. She’s the woman you want to be friends with. Seeing her and her friendships with the women in her family, that’s always a fun time. The fun banter and dirty talk that the women have when they get together is something I look forward to reading about in every book. Be it new mom for the second time Tara, or loud mouth Liz, Alicia fits right into this dominant group of women and I loved their scenes together.

The relationship between Garrett and Alicia moved at a really great pace. The concentration early on is all centered around Garrett’s rehab and how that puts this couple in close proximity to each other. This leads to them slowly moving their relationship from professional to romantic. I was so happy to have to *gasp* wait for their first sex scene! The sweet buildup to when they finally do get together was worth the wait and even though it took some time to get there, Garrett makes up for it with being so damn sexy in the bedroom. Their personal relationship isn’t something that’s allowed with their jobs, their contracts with the Rivers baseball team prohibits any kind of personal relationship between them and it does become an issue for them both. For as much as Alicia tried to keep things separate between them, and constantly reminding herself that once Garrett’s rehab was over, what was growing emotionally between them was too (not exactly sure why those two things were so connected in her head) the issue of them not being able to date was resolved very quickly and easily. I didn’t expect some big, drastic change in either of their careers to happen because of their relationship, but it was resolved in just a page.

Like I mentioned above, Garrett is that great, sexy athlete and a hero that made me drool. Now, he wasn’t perfect, in fact he acted like a big baby when his rehab didn’t go exactly as he planned. But that aside, he was sweet with Alicia, he has a great group of friends he’s had for years and he’s a driven athlete. All things that made me enjoy him and his story with Alicia.

Garrett’s group of friends is a bunch of men he roomed with in college in the athlete’s dorm, who all have made it professionally in their sport. They’re fun, they’re (of course) sexy and hot and even just getting a small introduction to them, we get a sense of some past pain they’re dealing with; most especially Gray, the race car driver whose story is up next.

The romance really drew me in to this story and I loved the progression of it. The nice, slow, teasing buildup for both Garrett and Alicia made their romance stronger and made me more invested in them as a couple. Alicia was such a likable character, I love her passion for her job, her ideas in doing something different to help rehab Garrett getting him ready for the pitcher’s mound again, and her personality was straight forward, what you see is what you get; all great things in a heroine. The end slipped just a little bit with Garrett’s bad attitude coming back in a negative way when his pitching goal didn’t go exactly as he planned. He lashes out and I just wanted to reach into the book and smack him. And also the small amount of worry with their relationship going public and the impact on their jobs, especially on Alicia’s end, ended up being resolved a little too easily for all the concern she expressed about it as their relationship grew. But overall, I enjoyed their story quite a bit and their relationship made for a very satisfying read.(less)

Ugh, I hate this series, but I'm going to read this anyway. *sigh*

Edit: FINALLY! Took me forever to finish this boring ass book. This is definitely the last Play-By-Play book that I'll be reading. Probably the last book by Jaci period, tbh. Changing the Game was the only good book in this series, and I just can't torture myself by reading another one. They are too corny and unrealistic. I love that she skips sports with each book, and although I’m not a huge baseball fan, I adored this book. I love and adored Garrett, I thought he was an incredible hero and all around great guy. I loved the athlete/trainer storyline, and can’t wait to see what Burton has in store for us next!

E: Like MinnChica I really enjoy the fact that Burton moves between different professional sports and different aspects of the sporting industry. I really enjoyed how Alicia called things like they were and challenged Garrett to actually participate in his healing process. She was able to snap him out of his professional glum so he could bring the drive he was known for playing with back to the rehabilitation program. I was very impressed with her motivation and lack of outward sympathy which was also a challenge to Garrett. When Burton wove the tension of their mutual attraction into the therapy sessions *fans self* things reached a whole new level of intensity.

MinnChica: The sexual tension in this story was off the charts! I loved that the attraction was there from the beginning, and that Alicia and Garrett didn’t take too long to dance around it. I also appreciated that they didn’t jump each other the second they were alone. The fact that Alicia valued her job and her responsibility to both Garrett and the team, was one of the things I liked most about her. But as E said, her no-nonsense way of dealing with Garrett’s rehab and her life in general made her one of my favorite heroes of the series so far!

E: Yes, the fact that Alicia had concerns, very valid ones about her future in the sports industry not to mention her current job so the attraction was not acted on instantly made their relationship appear more grounded. One of my favorite scenes was when Alicia decided that since Garrett had failed to show up for his session that she was going to go get him and complete the session regardless of any excuse he had. I loved seeing the real Garrett come out as she poked, prodded, pushed and rebuilt his confidence. One of the things I really enjoy about Burton and this series is how she incorporates friends and family so the reader never thinks that the central relationship is all that exists for one of the characters. I find that brings a three dimensional aspect to them. Call it my inner, well obvious romantic but I would love to see stories with Garrett’s friends… **hint**

MinnChica: I loved that scene as well. I think one of the things that makes this series so special is because of the relationships between friends and family that play such an integral part of the overall stories. With the large Riley family and their tight bond, it gives the larger-than-life heroes a down home feel. It grounds them, makes them real, forces them to deal with everyday situations while also living their strenuous, hectic and sometimes over-the-top lives as star athletes. And I am absolutely with you E, I would love to see stories with Garrett’s group of guy friends. In fact, the next book leaves the Riley clan and heads off to tell the stories of Garrett’s friend Gray. I love the few glimpses we got of Gray in this book, and I’m excited to see what Burton has in store for him, and for us at the racetrack!

E: Burton created another great story with Thrown by a Curve. I alternately laughed and scowled along with her main characters. She also threw in some perfectly wonderful solo time and ensured that both Alicia and Garrett didn’t have the advantage over the other. What was fair play for one was fair play for the other. And Garrett’s big gesture, I LOVED it! To me that summed up his entire character and I will admit that I gave a happy sniff or two. I really enjoyed reading Thrown by a Curve and I am looking forward to what Burton provides next in the Play by Play series.

MinnChica: All in all I continue to love this series, making it probably one of my all-time favorite sports romance series. Both Alicia and Garrett were wonderful characters, and Garrett did have an amazing grand gesture at the end of the book that made me want to jump up and down and hug him all over! The romance was so well done, the sexy times were SMOKIN’ HOT and the side characters were all a hoot. I can’t wait for the next installment.

Thrown by a Curve is the fifth book of Play-by-Play series by Jaci Burton. I loved this book mostly because of the heroine. Alicia is my favorite Play-by-Play heroine so far, she is very sophisticated, she knows what she wants, and she says what's on her mind. Garrett is very likeable but a little irritating because he did not trust Alicia's ability to make him the starting pitcher again.

I checked this book out from the library. Burton is getting better with every book she writes. This book has more angst, introspection, yet still retains the hot sex scenes that have become her signature with these books. A couple of things kept this from being a five star review. First, Garrett. He was a great hero. Sensitive, didn't mind carrying shopping bags, and was always willing to grill himself a steak. While he was a great guy, I wanted to see him wrap up more of his demons. He isn't a tortured soul, but like all good heroes, there are some things in his past that he needs to deal with. Those issues weren't addressed in the story, and he still came around. Second, Alicia was much stronger than Garrett. Combined with his issues from the past and the storyline of the injury, he becomes a borderline beta hero. I would have liked to see him take more of an active role in his destiny, instead of whining about some things (though he totally deserved to whine when he did). Again, I think that putting issues from his past to rest would have helped this.

As everyone can see, this is Burton's 5th book in this series. Thus far, the books center around the Riley family and extended family. While they have been fun to read about, Burton almost crosses the line with too many characters. When scenes involved the extended family, it is better to have read the past books. However, this can be a stand alone because the story doesn't hinge on past characters, though they do add color. I'm looking forward to her next book as there was a teaser in the back. I'm glad this series will continue, and that it won't center around just one family.

Overall, this is a very good book. Kudos to Burton for getting better and better as an author.(less)

Another Hot book from Jaci Burton and I got to hear about all the past relationships from the previous books. There is obvious sparks flying off the pages when it comes to Alicia and Garrett but there's that work ethic thing that really has Alicia torn. The whole time I was reading this book, all I could think was...I want my $9.99 back.

I loved the first three books in the Play by Play series, partly because of the type of men Jaci Burton created. They were Alpha males (capital A intended) who loved sex, were a tad bit emotionally stunted by things that happened in their life and had to find a woman that would let them be Alpha when they needed it but helped them get in touch with their emotional side. In PLAYING TO WIN, I felt like Cole didn't fit into the mold Jaci had created in the first three books. So I was a very happy woman when I met Garrett in the first few pages of THROWN BY A CURVE and found that Alpha male I grown to love in the series.

Garrett Ryan is trying to recover from a shoulder injury the previous season. None of those on his rehab team has been able to get him to a place where he could start pitching in the upcoming season. That is until Alicia Riley steps up and tells her boss, the River's team manager and the team's star pitcher that she could get him pitching if he followed her treatment plan. Garrett's decides to go with Alicia's plan, because what he wants more than anything is to pitch again. What neither of them count on their working relationship turning into something more.

Alicia has got to be my favorite heroine in the series so far. She doesn't cut Garrett any slack. Even when they started sleeping together, she stuck to what she needed to do to get Garrett where he wanted to be. She fought with crossing the patient/therapist line with Garrett and worried about what their relationship would mean to not only their working relationship, but with their employer. She didn't get all starry eyed because she was sleeping with the hot shot pitcher, but instead kept thing in prospective and was honest with herself.

Garrett may have whined and complained when it came to doing what he needed to do to rehab his shoulder, but you knew it was because he was afraid of where his career was going. But the man had a sweet side that would make any woman melt. He willingly went shopping, he made vegetarian meals and (most of the time) was very aware of Alicia and her feelings. He may not have always shown Alicia how much he appreciate what she did for him or how he felt about her, but when it mattered he got it right.

My only complaint with this book was having to wait for Garrett and Alicia to finally have sex. The sex is an on-going character in this series, so having to wait until midway through the book was a bit disappointing. However, when it did finally happen it was just as I would expect from the series. Garrett may not be quite as dirty as Mick, Gavin or Ty, but he was closer to what I've come to expect.(less)

This was just boring...
I really enjoyed some of the other books in this series, especially the one with Liz and Gavin, that one was just awesome. But this one, just so damn boring.
Not even good enough to reach Mick and Tara, or Savannah and Cole.
Since the start this has been slow in terms of passion and heat.
When I read this kind of series I expect passion, smoking hot moments, erotic foreplay and steamy hot sex. Not one of this characteristic was present in this sequel.

Surprisingly, I sort of like it again. This series have pretty uneven pacing and characterization but it managed to be intriguing as well. Although I like Burton even more when she include supernatural in her romance but this time, I was quite impressed by her way of making sports interesting enough to say the least. Garrett Scott is in a jam. Everything has come easy for him. Now sporting a shoulder injury that isn’t healing, he is faced with the possibility he may never pitch again. Frustrated and depressed, he asks Alicia in front of her bosses what she thinks of his injury and he gets the blunt answer he wasn’t necessarily looking for, but needs to hear.

Alicia pretty much lays it on the line that he isn’t doing everything he can in physical therapy and that the bosses are letting him off. Not to mention he isn’t doing his exercises at home. Her big mouth gets her in trouble and placed in charge of rehabbing Garrett so he can hopefully start sometime in the next baseball season.

I am not a huge baseball fan, but that isn’t what stopped me from enjoying this book. Alicia and Garrett spend the first half of the book basically working on healing his shoulder while he whined a lot. She’s blunt to a fault which I appreciate, but so dedicated to her career, she doesn’t often stop and enjoy life. The two seem to want to have chemistry more than I felt they had chemistry.

When they do come together, it just didn’t knock my socks off. The spend a lot of time being honest, then hiding from each other, then being honest, then hiding again. He has family hang up problems. She is so focused on her career she pushes him away without talking.

It all comes together in the end, but by then I wasn’t that vested in the story to really care. I really wanted to love this book as I adore the series. This branch of the Riley family just don’t seem to do it for me. Now I am ready to move on to Gray’s story…who’s he? It looks like Jaci Burton is moving away from the Riley family of athletes and onto Garrett’s college buddies who are all involved in one sport or even two sports. Gray is a race car driver…and I can’t wait for him.

My recommendation is to give this one a pass in the series. It is a little pricey for the amount of pages you get and just not the book I wanted to read. It’s just OK and that is the flaw that will have me jumping fast to the next book in the hopes it gets better.(less)

Very sweet and cute story. It's realistic. I think it really happens out there, torn between the job and personal life. Garrett and Alicia are two people who learned to love each other in the process. It's inevitable. Their connection was strong. Is it just me or is this not the most borring book ever?I haven't finished it yet, and that right says a lot. I LOVE the series and love, love, love Jaci, but this is kuraizy! At this point I don't even care what happens, I just want it to be over. I mean, I'm on page 220 of 267 and I can honestly tell you that if you were to read the first chapter and jump to this point you wouldnt have missed thing. My first Jaci Burton read!

As a total baseball junkie, this book helped tide me over until Opening Day. The romance was fab! I loved the build up between Garrett and Alicia! They had great chemistry and I especially liked that neither of them was afraid to confront the other...or get all butt-hurt when they were called out on their assholery. They were adults and acted like ones. Loved that!

Well I finished this one late last night and I am not sure if it was because I was tired or what but, I just wasn’t as taken with this one. I have read all the other Play by Play books in this series and have had this one pre-ordered on itunes since it was available to order. So in other words YES I have been excited to read this one.

i think i would have probably given this book a 5 if it was in first person but we still got both of there points of views. so one chapter Garrett then the next Alicia.
