Thrown by a Curve needed a curve ball, a fast ball, a slider, and most importantly, a changeup. The same ol', same ol' formula has gotten a bit tired. A couple of strikes but the series is not out yet. Final score: You really can't go wrong with books featuring the boys of summer!

Alicia, a sports medicine specialist, is the sister of Cole who was the hero is the last book, Playing to Win, and she's also the cousin of the characters from the prior books. She meets Garrett, the star pitch...more

I just stumbled over Jaci Burto's blog, and I see this cover at hers

And I kinda like,

Its Paul Marron!!! Oh yay, I soooo want to buy this!!
I don't care his body not as hot as Jed Hill or Jason Vendryes. But, ekkkk, can't say no to Marron XD.
I don't care if I'm not read 4 previous books, I just want to ogling stare at the cover.

Can 2013 come fast??

(don't mind me. A little bit excited and exhilarated here)

Mmmm, I love me some Play by Play Series men. I get completely caught up in the characters Jaci Burton creates and I get hooked. I have loved every book in this series and each one is entertaining, easy to read, and super hot. I like that Alicia is confident and that Garrett is cocky and they both take their jobs and future seriosly. You get to catch up with the rest of the Riley family and can anyone else believe Nathan is already 18! Dare I hope there will be a book about him in the future? (P...more

Simple plot. Almost too simple. It had it's hot moments towards the end, but I thought at one point there would be major drama up ahead, but nothing huge ever developed.

I would have liked to see some complexity of some sort...idk, something was missing. If you want a straight up, simple story without any angst, then this is it.

Alicia Riley is a physical therapist who is assigned to hot shot ball player Garrett Scott's shoulder recovery.

I felt the issue that initially kept them apart--the confl...more

WAAAAHHHH! I'm so disappointed with this one! :( It makes me so sad. I've loved this series and I know you can't win them all but I wasn't ready to be disappointed yet. I just really thought it was boring. Not enough romance for me, not enough of the Riley family, and I just didn't really care enough about whether Garrett and Alicia got together.

Then the end came together so quickly, I just felt like it was an after thought. The most telling thing is that it took me THREE DAYS to finish this. Th...more

Garrett’s bad attitude is holding back his rehab and keeping his goal of returning to pitch as a part of his team’s starting rotation out of his reach. Alicia, a physical therapist for Garrett’s baseball team, tells him straight up to get his head out of his ass and concentrate on his rehab. I kind of liked her a lot from that point on. Garrett knows he needs to shake things up and wants Alicia to lead his rehab and concentrate completely on...more

Ugh, I hate this series, but I'm going to read this anyway. *sigh*

Edit: FINALLY! Took me forever to finish this boring ass book. This is definitely the last Play-By-Play book that I'll be reading. Probably the last book by Jaci period, tbh. Changing the Game was the only good book in this series, and I just can't torture myself by reading another one. They are too corny and unrealistic. Everything plays out too perfectly, and the conflicts are so damn lame. The sex scenes were okay, but not good...more

MinnChica: I am the biggest fan of sports romance books, and Jaci Burton is as good as it gets. I love that she skips sports with each book, and although I’m not a huge baseball fan, I adored this book. I love and adored Garrett, I thought he was an incredible hero and all around great guy. He was in a rut, and Alicia’s sharp assessment of him had Garrett looking at himself and realizing he needed to make some big changes. I...more

Garrett Scott and Alicia Riley
4.5/5 Stars

Thrown by a Curve is the fifth book of Play-by-Play series by Jaci Burton. I loved this book mostly because of the heroine. Alicia is my favorite Play-by-Play heroine so far, she is very sophisticated, she knows what she wants, and she says what's on her mind. Garrett is very likeable but a little irritating because he did not trust Alicia's ability to make him the starting pitcher again.

Garrett Scott is a pitcher for the St. Louis Rivers. A shoulder injury took him out of the game at the end of last season and he's rehabbing, trying to get back so he can pitch at the start of the new season. But his rehab progress has stalled and he has become frustrated and difficult to work with.
Alicia Riley is a sports therapist for the Rivers. She hasn't been with the team very long. She quietly observes the meeting between Garrett, the team doctor and therapists about his rehab. Garrett,...more

Probablemente no lo disfruté tanto porque era el tercero que leía, aunque una buena escritora debería sorprender siempre... Just Saying.

I checked this book out from the library. Burton is getting better with every book she writes. This book has more angst, introspection, yet still retains the hot sex scenes that have become her signature with these books. I enjoyed reading about a woman who was career driven, determined to meet her idea of success, and had morals. I liked that this book walked the line between career and personal and that the hero, Garrett, was willing to sacrifice for her. I won't say anymore, because this gets...more

Ladies I want to introduce you to my fantasy version of Garrett Scott:

This is the face I pictured the entire time I was reading Thrown by a Curve

My number one remedy for a book hangover, is a quick, simple, somewhat predictable and steamy read. No matter how bad the hangover is, these key things always work for me, and Thrown By A Curve was exactly what I was looking for, plus a little something extra.

Even though I knew exactly what I was getting, based on the blurb and cover I still found myse

I am sooooo DISAPPOINTED. Not by the story - because I thought it was the best one so far - but because the in this series, they always add a the first chapter of the next book... I don't know if anyone has realized this - no, scrap that, I'm sure everyone has - but the next book hasn't been published yet. The last sentence we got to read was (view spoiler)[ "but we have a problem, it's your son Grayson" (hide spoiler)]. Seriously????? What was that?? I want to get my hands on this book (One Swe...more

Another Hot book from Jaci Burton and I got to hear about all the past relationships from the previous books. There is obvious sparks flying off the pages when it comes to Alicia and Garrett but there's that work ethic thing that really has Alicia torn. Alicia finally gives into her desires mid way through the book and that's when the smok'n hot sex starts steaming up the pages. Not sure where their relationship is going, once the season gets started Alicia seems to be cast aside. Alicia already...more

The whole time I was reading this book, all I could think was...I want my $9.99 back.

I have read all the books in this series and after not really loving the last one, I told myself I would wait to get this one on PBS or through a book swap, but did I listen to myself? No. I got all excited and purchased it, hoping it would be as good as Mick, Gavin or Jenna's stories. FAIL.

I found this book to be just flat out boring. Throughout the entire story I felt like I was waiting for something to happe...more

I loved the first three books in the Play by Play series, partly because of the type of men Jaci Burton created. They were Alpha males (capital A intended) who loved sex, were a tad bit emotionally stunted by things that happened in their life and had to find a woman that would let them be Alpha when they needed it but helped them get in touch with their emotional side. In PLAYING TO WIN, I felt like Cole didn't fit into the mold Jaci had created in the first three books. So I was a very happy w...more

I have to say either I wasn’t in the mood to read this book or it wasn’t the best one of the series, because I was not feeling it. I had a little trouble getting into the story to start out with. Pitcher Garrett Scott is currently in rehab for an injury related to pitching. He ends up working with trainer Alicia Riley, cousin to the Riley brothers from previous books, who also be...more

This was just boring...
I really enjoyed some of the other books in this series, especially the one with Liz and Gavin, that one was just awesome. But this one, just so damn boring.
Not even good enough to reach Mick and Tara, or Savannah and Cole.
Since the start this has been slow in terms of passion and heat.
When I read this kind of series I expect passion, smoking hot moments, erotic foreplay and steamy hot sex. Not one of this characteristic was present in this sequel.
The sex was...more

Surprisingly, I sort of like it again. This series have pretty uneven pacing and characterization but it managed to be intriguing as well. Although I like Burton even more when she include supernatural in her romance but this time, I was quite impressed by her way of making sports interesting enough to say the least. Add some romance and hot stuff, you definitely got this book right.

“Sorry. It was very romantic. You should get naked now.”

The Play by Play series has been an instant hit with me for a long time. Mick and Tara started me off with football and I haven’t looked back. The last book and this one though have left me wanting for something more. Unfortunately, this one bored me for more than 50% of the book, but I kept plugging.

Alicia Riley is one of the famous Riley’s that this series so far has focused on. Seems like the sports gene runs long and hard through this family. Sports medicine is what this Riley goes into and...more

Very sweet and cute story. It's realistic. I think it really happens out there, torn between the job and personal life. Garrett and Alicia are two people who learned to love each other in the process. It's inevitable. Their connection was strong. They knew there would be consequences yet they follow what their heart tells them. and I really love the fact that they fight for it in the end. AND I really appreciate this book. As a physical therapy student, I always wonder what it would be like to w...more

Is it just me or is this not the most borring book ever?I haven't finished it yet, and that right says a lot. I LOVE the series and love, love, love Jaci, but this is kuraizy! At this point I don't even care what happens, I just want it to be over. I mean, I'm on page 220 of 267 and I can honestly tell you that if you were to read the first chapter and jump to this point you wouldnt have missed thing. I'm having really bad luck with books this month :-( Definitely don't recommend buying it. $10...more

My first Jaci Burton read!

As a total baseball junkie, this book helped tide me over until Opening Day. The romance was fab! I loved the build up between Garrett and Alicia! They had great chemistry and I especially liked that neither of them was afraid to confront the other...or get all butt-hurt when they were called out on their assholery. They were adults and acted like ones. Loved that!

Interestingly, this was an erotic romance and I felt that was the biggest weakness of the book. Whereas it...more

Alicia Riley is a sport medical specialist and Garrett Scott is an injured pitcher. Alicia has grown up in a family of sports heros and they are pretty much a pain in the ass to her. When she heard Garrett wimping about never pitching again and how nothing was working, she told him like she saw it. To pull his head out and suck it up. Now was she going to love the job she loved so much and trained so long for?

She is assigned to be his personal therapist. With a bit of give and take on both sides...more

sadly meh. 2.5

Well I finished this one late last night and I am not sure if it was because I was tired or what but, I just wasn’t as taken with this one. I have read all the other Play by Play books in this series and have had this one pre-ordered on itunes since it was available to order. So in other words YES I have been excited to read this one.

Here is the cover write up (then I will go into my “meh” status)

i loved this book so I'm going to give it 4 stars out of 5

i think i would have probably given this book a 5 if it was in first person but we still got both of there points of views. so one chapter Garrett then the next Alicia.

Ive only read one other book from this series because i don't like reading series books if the people are related in some way and they have contact with each other, but i did really want to read another one of the books in these series so i waited for months and skipped fro...more

Jaci Burton is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling, award-winning author of over 50 books. She lives in Oklahoma and when she isn’t on deadline (which is often), she can usually be found wrestling with her uncooperative garden, wrangling her dogs, watching an unhealthy amount of television, or completely losing track of time reading a great book. She’s a total romantic and longs for the hap...more
