This book of poems might have never made it. It could have been thwarted by a disbelieving second grade teacher who accused the author, then a little girl, of plagiarizing a poem she wrote for an assignment. Reading First Kiss, I did, of course, what I had promised myself that this time I wouldn't do. I devoured these poems in great, greedy gulps. I just couldn't stop.

I enjoyed this collection of poems very much. Beautiful imagery, but written simply without needing to over-complicate things. My favourites were "Castle Cats" and "First Kiss".

The title poem, "First Kiss," is an ode to the Teddy O'Connors of our lives, and "A Child's Poem" recalls an incident that really does contain "some secret." Alfaro's ...more
