In Haunted, Anna learns about Culebra's past and how he and Max met. Culebra has been an intriguing character throughout the series and it was nice to learn who he was and what he did before owning Beso de la Muerte, a bar in a cave in Mexico.

Feeling lonely on Christmas Eve, Anna heads to her favorite Mexican hangout. There she finds Culebra and Max knocking back drinks at the bar. When someone from Culebra's turns up seeking help, he cannot refuse. He believes he's repaying a debt, but his "fr
This book is called haunted for several reasons that I'm not going to go into because I don't want to be a spoiler. I read this 300 page ebook in one afternoon -- it was that good. The books in this series combine just the right amount of action, with description and love story interest to keep the reader engaged. Anna's ex, Max, is back again and being a jerk like usual. I never understood why he had such a problem with her, but at least in this book he starts coming around to recognizing she's ...more
I really liked this one, it seemed like Anna really went through a big range of emotions. Anna wasn’t the funniest person at the start. I didn’t really like seeing her wallow in self pity, not a good look for her. I loved that she was surprised by those that cared about her. Her visit by Frey and John-John made me smile. I liked the frank discussion that Frey had with her, I really wanted that for her, but was scared that she would screw it up and not let herself be happy.

I hated how things star

Haunted, #8 in the Anna Strong Chronicles, brings back the dynamic action packed life of Anna Strong-bounty hunter turned vampire, that I missed in book 7. Anna was turned into a vampire through violent means and without her consent. While it has been a wild adventure for Anna, she has accepted her role in being the Chosen. She is content in her relationship with Stephan, a human

Yea, that’s vampire and bounty hunter Anna Strong for you. She’s a bad ass, no mercy kind of girl. And when her friend Culebra’s Cartel past comes back to haunt him, Anna doesn’t think twice about using her bad ass vampire and bounty hunter skills to he

Haunted is a powerful, compelling story of drug cartels, human trafficking, gun running along the Mexican border, and did I mention the vampire? Or the shape shifter? Anna Strong, bounty hunter and vampire, fulfills every revenge fantasy you've ever had against the evil predators who traffic in young girls. Anna doesn't mean to get caught up in the drug cartel operations along the Mexican border, but once she gets involved she doesn't back down. Jeanne C. Stein is a writer with a great command o ...more
Culebra was a big part of HAUNTED. We get to dig into his past and help him out with the problems that his past is now causing.

Anna is one of my favorite heroines. I always enjoy seeing others underestimate Anna and her coming in to kick their asses. I do miss seeing Anna doing her bounty hunting. She is hunting someone in HAUNTED but I miss her working with her partner and I hope he is back to being by her side at some point in the next book. Anna's love life is kinda wonky in HAUNTED. Since Anna was unwillingly turned into a vampire, there are very few people who know her true nature. Her shape-shifter friend, Culebra is one one of the few trusted ones, so when his dark past is revealed, that shock hits her even harder. Yet when one of his past cohorts comes to call wanting to cash in a life debt Anna instantly steps up, along with Max, the DEA agent and her ex, to support Culebra on his quest. Traveling deep into Mexico,
Finished Jeanne C. Stein's Haunted this morning, having started it Friday morning. It was pretty good! Like with most of my reads lately, I couldn't recall a lot of what went down last time, but was able to get the general idea of it through the storytelling.

In this one Anna learns of her friend, Culebra's dark past and how it soon catches up with him when an old friend, Ramon, comes to him asking for help. In order to help him, he'll have to return to parts of Mexico where he left behind his ol

The Anna Strong Chronicles continue strong with Haunted, the newest release in the urban fantasy series. While most of the main characters make appearances in Haunted, the majority of the book is based around Anna, Max, and Culebra. When Culebra's past catches up with him, Anna and Max determine to help their friend. Anna is shocked by Culebra's past and struggles to come to terms with the truth as well as moving past the hurts between her and Max. While Anna is involved in deadly dealings in Me ...more

Eighth in the Anna Strong urban fantasy series revolving around Anna, a bounty hunter-turned-vampire in San Diego.

My Take
I loved it and I hated it. Anna is strong and does the right thing on the big, general moral issues. As a fictional character, she gets to be bad on the bad guys. On a more personal level, she does some stupid things that I can't decide if she's simply acting without thinking or if Stein figures this is an easy way out.

I also had my worries that this might be the end of the s

Our Review, by LITERAL ADDICTION's Pack Alpha - Michelle L. Olson:

I was lucky enough to receive a copy of Haunted from the Publisher for review. I settled in with the tale on a trip out of town and almost missed several set meet up times because I couldn't put it down!

Haunted is basically an action movie set to paper with a leading lady to rival Jennifer Garner, Angelina Jolie, or any of the other action heroines out there that we so love.

*First Thoughts*

Such a bittersweet ending to this story. I actually broke out the tissues because my eyes could not stop watering. Please, you know I'm not going to spoil what happens or to whom. If you've read this book, then you know. If you haven't read this book or series, you need to start from the beginning and work your way forward. Trust me, this won't be one of those series that goes on forever and has the heroine become a whoreling.

Anna Strong, vampire
This doesn’t seem to be a very well-known series so for those of you who haven’t heard of it before I will give you a little background.

Anna Strong is a bounty hunter. She is also a vampire. Turned against her will in book 1 Anna has struggled to come to terms with what she is. Life is difficult for her as she tries to act human because in this series vampires are not the sexy kind we sometimes read about. Over the previous seven books Anna has dealt with all kinds of things. She has made friend

This was my first Jeanne C. Stein vampire novel featuring Anna Strong, but it won't be my last. Haunted has an excellent contemporary plot, the pacing kept me turning the pages, and the characters are well-drawn. I don't read a lot of vampire fantasy, but Anna Strong is a compelling and sympathetic woman who just happens to have a few special powers. I'm a fan.
In Haunted, Anna learns Culebra's deepest secrets. It is Christmas time, not wanting to spend it alone Anna heads down to Culebra's finding a drunk DEA agent and ex-lover Max and Culebra loose lipped by all the alcohol they imbibed in. She learns many shocking details of Culebra cartel past.

Within days the cartel comes calling, pulling Culebra back in while Anna and Max follow along to help. Finding treachery at every turn, Anna, Max, and Culebra face many evils of the man made variety. Making t

Another great installment. Actually it's my favorite book of the series. I love Anna. I call her my favorite asshole. She's fierce, unapologetic, but also loyal to those she loves. In this installment she and Max accompany Culebra into the depths of Mexico to help an old friend rescue his wife and child from a drug lord. Betrayals, action, drugs, kidnapping, guns, and friendship all ensue. We get the background of Culebra and it's very interesting. I hope this series never ends, but it seems
Short Review - All the pieces are here for a good urban fantasy Vampire novel, yet we seem to be missing that spark that turns a ok book into a great book, I keep reading this book expecting something to click, for her "Chosen" status to kick in, Yet it’s still not happening. This latest book is a novella, having her chase down humans is dull; at no point is there a reasonable threat to Anna, so the outcome is little more than a formality.

Culebra's story is ok, nothing new but it’s solid, howeve
I did like many things in this book. I felt there was a significant amount of character development, but it turned into a comparison of how bad is bad. While Culebra is not seen in a favorable light, the bad guys get badder and badder so he doesn't seem AS bad. The action scenes are good, but the villainous behavior just gets more and more vile till it just seems a catalog of inhuman actions. It is a good juxtaposition that the inhuman one is the most humane.

The wrap-up at the end just left me c
I like this series; probably a 3.5 star verdict. It had been awhile since visiting with this series and then I had the opportunity to pick up the last couple missing volumes. This story focuses on a drug cartel, abducted young women/girls, and Anna's (our blood-sucking heroine) disastrous love life. If that sounds like an odd plot combination to you, it felt that way to me too as I struggled through the beginning. Maybe struggled is a bit harsh, as it did smooth out once the direction was made c ...more
Oh, what a downer. I loved this series up until this one. I have been waiting and waiting and waiting for Max to get written back and only for this? Ughhh, this sucked. This seemed like a story just to get a book out there. It was just too much of a story about drug thugs than about vamps and the supernatural and the deal with Max just killed what little was left. And the thing with Frey? Really a few paragraphs at the beginning and the end just felt like it was stuck in there to be a cliff hang ...more
Wow, not quite sure what to think of all that went down in this one. It's the holidays and Anna finds herself alone, then visited by friends from the past. Then surprise, her family is back to close up their ca house. Feeling a little lonely leads to a trip to see Culebra and runs into Max and we learn alot more about the snake. Eventually she's pulled into assisting them into rescuing abused girls the cartel has kidnapped and bringing down some Mexican drug ring leaders. A little bittersweet. T ...more

If you have not read this series in order, you need to. Book one of Anna Strong Series is Becoming.

This book was one of those monumental change stories in a series. Culebra's past comes to light and the truth of some of his past comes to light also, when an old friend comes calling for a favor. Anna also gets a glimpse of what could be in her life. By the end of this tale, Anna's life will have dramatically changed, some for the better, and some for the worse. I enjoyed the twists and turns in
It helps to read this series in order, which won't be difficult to do because you won't be able to put them down and this book was no exception!

Anna's friend and mentor, Culebra, is in trouble when an old friend from his past comes calling for a favor. She also gets a glimpse of what could be in her life. At the end of the story, Anna's life will have completely turned around, some for better some for worse.

Stein's writing style provides all the usual twists and turns in this story, like she h
I think since she got involved again with the cat I like these books much more. I like the characters overall, I'm not sure how I feel about her ex still, William, well, I'm not sure what is up with that at all and I'm sure we'll find out. The odd thing about the William thing is his wife, I mean, it's not like she wasn't a part of his life. She totally turned slutty and dirty. Odd, very odd, don't you think he's care, just a little. Compared to the others which were around a 2.5 to 3 this is mo ...more
Finally finished this last night. I debated between 2 and 3 stars, but some things towards the end gave it that bump to 3.
I've been reading this series for... how many years now? I think it's time for Anna Strong and me to part ways. It's not a horrible read, but it's not more than mediocre, and I'm tired of the genre. I think this is maybe book #7? If I were to suggest the series to anyone, I think I would recommend stopping at book 5. But that's just my opinion.
A solid entry in the series. I was skeptical at first--it's rare for a series to hold my interest eight books in, plus I was tired of the politics, conspiracy, and more 'global' themes from the more recent books. But after the first few pages the story kicked in and this may be my favorite so far. I liked the focus on Culebra, the moral ambiguity (for both Culebra and Anna) and the personal and topical issues this story raises.
