I love the history of the old wild west, and all of the characters that rolled through in the day. Old western movies, tall tales spun out of the wild west, and loads of picture books for kids about some of the varmints that wrangled and won!
For Betts and Missouri (Gram) in the state of Missouri, the legends are what shape the town of Broken Rope. Tourists from all over come to hear the stories of the cowboys that road through the area, and unfortunatly most of them typically on the wrong side o...more

I enjoyed this Country Cooking School Mystery by PAIGE SHELTON. IF MASHED POTATOES COULD DANCE takes place in Broken Rope, Missouri. It seems like everybody knows the other person in this small town. It's nice when people are personal friends with the police in the town. Betts is the main sleuth. Betts talent is being comfortable in the presence of ghosts. They are also comfortable with her. There is more than one ghost, but Sally Swarthmore is the one in the forefront. Sally went to her death b...more
Broken Rope, Missouri is home to Gram's Country Cooking School and a few very special ghostly guests. Isabelle "Betts" Winston and her grandmother "Miz" seem to have the unique ability to see and communicate with the deceased residents of the town but keep that under your hat. It's supposed to be a secret.

The cooking school in Broken Rope is host to a party of tourists, and when three of them are kidnapped, Betts wants to help the police, especially her once and current boyfriend, policeman Cliff. But she has her hands full with a new ghost--she's inherited the ability from her grandmother to see them--one of Broken Rope's most famous citizens, an ax murderess in the style of Lizzie Borden. Much as I don't care for ghosts in detective stories, Shelton keeps you reading and it's an enjoyable way t...more
I am somewhat conflicted about this book. I really enjoyed the characters. Betts, the main-characters was lovely and I also really liked that she was not infallable and always right about everything and everybody (she really disliked Ophelia and behaved incredibly childish towards her but unlike so many other cozies I did not have the impression that the reader was supposed to agree with her actions and see them as anything but childish and at the end there was no big 'I had been right about her...more
If Mashed Potatoes Could Dance is the second in this delightful new series by Paige Shelton.
Betts and Grams are planning on getting started on the midsummer cleaning on their cooking school. But then the town's fake sheriff, millionaire and town historian, Jake, volunteers them to put up a bunch of tour bus foodies, their hotel rooms having been overbooked. Fortunately for everyone involved better accommodation are found nearby. But Betts and Gram soon agree to hold some cooking classes, in hope...more

This is another awesome little cozy by Paige Shelton. Seriously, she is my favorite cozy author!
In this one, we have another ghost (one channeling her inner Lizzie Borden), a hint of romance that does not smother, and plenty of action around a kidnapping and a murder.
I spent all one Friday evening reading it in one sitting -- because it was just that fun.
I definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys cozy mysteries.

I was a little hesitant to start this book, something about the axe-wielding ghost just didn't immediately appeal to me, but once I picked it up I was hard pressed to put it back down again. A lot of fun! A great murder mystery I had no idea of the ending to, as well as a great ghost mystery as well (although I had the result of that investigation pegged early on). I really liked Sally-the-ghost. All the characters are likeable and I got a big kick out of seeing a cameo appearance by Sam Brion,...more
How to add another half-star? Fun cozy mystery series.... good characters, ghosts included. There is a cooking school, a kick-ass Gram and fun family dynamics mixed up with "who done it", small town history and some romances budding on the side. Good fun and I will read them as quickly as Shelton writes them.
This second book in the series was much better than the first and I found that I am really liking the wild west town of Broken Rope, Missouri. I also like that it seems each book will have Betts finding a new ghost- it is fun to have a new character to meet, some mystery to solve for each ghost and a murder mystery to solve all at once! There wasn't too much cooking going on in this book but I appreciated the fact that the recipes matched up with the title and cooking class theme, featuring pota...more
