“I Hate Everyone Starting With Me, is a “hoot-n-holler,” rollicking-good-read, from the irrepressible Joan Rivers. I had tired of Ms Rivers of late, tired of her constant plastic surgeries and catty, caustic banter. But this book proves why she became famous in the first place. She is side-splittingly hilarious, witty, profane, and obviously a very intelligent woman.
If you are down in the dumps, read this book, you will laugh so much you will forget why you were upset.
This is also a most quotab...more

Joan Rivers attacks everything and everybody in her sometimes hilarious but almost always vulgar and vitriolic misanthropic observations about who and what annoys her.

I wasn’t always offended by her attacks – after all, she doesn’t leave anyone out, not even herself. And she makes a point of frequently interjecting remarks so outrageous it is clear she is only joking. Still.

At times, she tackled subjects that just would have best been left alone. I’m not one to find humor in making fun of, for i...more

I HATE EVERYONE...STARTING WITH ME

Is it just me or is it right?
Joan has a good attitude, I will give her that.
But..
Is it right?
She seems to be oblivious
about her own age.
As if she's not old. She's bionic!
How does she do that and make me believe it?
No wonder gays love her.

If I say the book sucks,
Joan would say how good did it feel.

It is good bathroom material.
Jam packed full of one liners, for those short trips.
Sorry Joan, we love you.
Jewish jokes, been there.
Black and gay jokes, s...more

This is an undeniably entertaining audiobook read by Joan herself, which totally made it hilarious. I say to all of you who read the book and were disappointed that you chose the wrong forum or you must not be a Joan Rivers fan. Her delivery of this material is spot on. This audiobook was absolutely entertaining and classic Joan. I had the privilege of seeing her live many years ago and her sarcasim is nothing but pure wit. You've got to give this woman a boatload of credit for being among the f...more

I fucking love this woman. She's at the top of her game in her 70's and come back more successfully from more personal and career bad shit than I can comprehend. And I mean truly at the top of her game; she knows her craft and herself and the business so well that she is untouchable in her particular form of comedy genius. Un-fucking-touchable, y'all. You try it.

Most basically, this book is a collection of one-liners about culture and celebrities and the business which move light and fast and hi...more

Let me start by saying I have never hated Joan Rivers. In fact, at one time, I loved, loved, loved her. Early in my career, back in her can-we-talk days, I interviewed her for a feature story and I still keep that yellow-edged article in my portfolio because I enjoyed our conversation so much.

But in recent years, I haven't loved her as much as I used to. I saw her live a few years ago and felt like she lost her edge, relying too much on the F-word to get her jokes across. I guess when you get to...more

Mildly amusing. The book seems to be a combination of some of her old material (the amusing part) and newer bitterer complaints about EVERYTHING. It would be funny, if you thought she was just doing it for a laugh, but you get the uneasy feeling that she is a really bitter, nasty old lady, desperately trying to retain some relevance by using vulgarities every other sentence. I have teenagers...if I want moody and vulgar, I'll talk to them. Oh wait...my kids are pleasant...unlike Joan Rivers.

My husband heard great reviews of this book and knows that I love a good laugh while I’m on my daily commute. When he saw I got it in the mail to review, he told me I should listen to it. It is basically a five hour comedy act from Joan Rivers on a diatribe about all that she hates in life. And she hates a lot. Luckily...more

Well, I knew before I bought this book what to expect--I featured it on my blog a few months ago after it was released and I had to read it. After all, this is Joan Rivers we're talking about here! From the first page to the last, I could not stop laughing. She truly hates everyone and herself, just as the title suggests.

Some of the comedy in this book is really ignorant, and if you don't have a thick skin, or you're not accustomed to Joan's outbursts without thinking, but rather speaking first,...more

I have been a fan of Joan Rivers for a long time, so I was looking forward to reading "I Hate Everyone....Starting With Me". I'm well aware that many people find her to be overly abrasive and "mean", and I have spoken up on her behalf many times because I almost always find her to be very funny. However, this book was a letdown. There were a few funny lines, but many that I have heard before and not enough to make it worthwhile. It surprised me that someone with a reputation for being such a har...more

I'm finding it crass, crude and mean. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Joan. She's LOL funny on "Fashion Police," on David Letterman, in her standup (I've seen her a couple times) and I love whenever she gives an interview. She's not just really, really funny, but she keeps it real. However, I thought the book would be more sophisticated. I thought it would be her treatise on getting older and not standing anymore for bullshit. I thought it would be an expose on things we don't say aloud in society, o...more

This good needs to have a warning label with it; A LOT of people will get offended by this book. If you wanted to read this book, you need to be open minded, and ready to laugh a lot. This book is very entertaining, and you see why Joan Rivers is very successful in her career. If you don't take what she writes seriously, this will be one of the funniest books you will read. You will laugh at the reasons why she hates everything and everyone; it's a long list, by the way. I read this book within...more

This was an entertaining read. I was down in my back and feeling generally Pissy, and got just what I would expect from a Joan Rivers book, over 200 pages of Bitching. It was glorious to hear complaining that wasn't about my cooking for a change! It's filled with griping and insults of just about every segment of humanity, however, I was only offended at the mention of Kate Winslet being fat. It's a beautiful read if you are in the mood for giving the world the finger (NOT fingering the world, t...more

I thought I would like "I Hate Everyone...Starting with Me," by Joan Rivers, because, well, some days I feel exactly the same way. Instead, I struggled to read it; no smiles, let alone a laugh out loud chuckle ~ not a one.

Perhaps Joan is the type of comedian best listened to, live and in person. I have read books by other comedians that would cause me to smile, chuckle, laugh, even to the point of tears. I read somewhere that sarcasm is the lowest form of humor, yet is often the funniest to me....more

The title sounds fun, right?
This book is a collection of jokes: some of them just laugh-out-loud and some just (maybe just on paper and not told by Joan herself) cruel or vulgar. One thing is sure: if she doesn't take it to another level, she wouldn't be where she is as a comedienne. So I totally get that.

She laughs at everything (even herself) and if you are in a mocking mood, or just light hearted funny book, this may be just right for you. I like how she talks about common things (ex: dinner...more

I love Joan Rivers, I think she is funny, smart and an equal opportunity critic but this book seemed like a chance for Joan to make a quick buck...but in reality I even appreciate that fact. You can hear Joan saying 90% of the things in her act or on the View. No one is exempt from her poking fun at people and I love that. When she claimed this was the first book Costo banned (not that I am a Costco shopper, but only becasue BJ's is closer), I had to see what this was all about. Very short, and...more

If you're a Joan-Ranger, you'll really enjoy the chapters in this book, where she decimates the topics and people who drive her cray-cray (she would hate that phrase.)

I laughed out loud a lot reading this book. She's just as sharp as she was 30 years ago, with even bigger pop-culture treasures to target and tease. I highly recommend this book as a summer read or if you just want something between a novel and a magazine. Thought I think it's the perfect length, I'm looking forward to the publica...more

Yes, it's just a collection of jokes. Setup, punchline, setup, punchline. But they are funny jokes, and I bwah-ha-haed many times. So I don't care much if the jokes were originals, recycled, purchased from jokewriters, or taken from bubble-gum wrappers. I like Joan Rivers even when she's awful. Especially when she's awful.

The only weak portion of the book was the reworked state slogans. Bah. And only one for Oklahoma? C'mon Joan, we're easy to mock. The reddest state in the Union. Home of Jim In...more

I am not a huge fan of Joan Rivers but I don't dislike her either. I read one of her other books and thought it was just ok so this book was a pleasant surprise. I laughed out loud several times which is rare for me. I get her humor - at least this time around. I don't understand the reviews where people are shocked she is so crass. When has she not been like that? That didn't bother me at all but I will say if you are easily offended, this is not the book for you. But I hope you aren't because...more

I really really love Joan Rivers. Her cynical and sarcastic humor in this book is amazing. These are the types of things I really want to say out loud but don't because I still want to have friends. I've heard that if you've read her other works, you won't like this one as much, or if you watch her a lot on TV, but for the part time fans out there who catch her when they can you'll adore this. I love Joan Rivers. She really does not discriminate-she truly hates everyone. And this lists them all by chapter-old people, young people, weddings, funerals, homosexuals, straights, etc...and especially Betty White. hahaha It was LOL funny and I will probably read it over and over when I need a giggle. I think one of my favorites was (not a direct quote but close) "I hate old people who don't know when to die. When you see an old person sitting at a table hunched and wheezing you just want to...more

It's a very easy read. At a mere 242 pages, it's also a quick read. Note that this book is not an autobiography. It's Joan doing what she does best: insult humor. A lot of her jokes are hit and miss, but I found myself chuckling at a few. Every paragraph starts with, "I hate..." and she does indeed hate nearly everything. Yes, even including herself. I recommend reading this book piecemeal, otherwise it's just a seemingly endless barrage of her politically incorrect humor. And, boy, is she polit...more

I read this on the iPad which was brilliant since she had herself doing jokes at the start of each chapter. Was the first time I have seen any author mix themselves into the writing of the book which was a smart use of the audiobook that you would have missed if you just purchased the book. That being said, if you are not a Joan fan you won't like this book.its pretty obvious that her humor is edgy so if you are expecting her to make nice....skip it. I loved the book, but always enjoy her stand u...more

I must say this usually isn't my type of book but I love Joan Rivers so I said what the hell. I am so glad I decided to pick this one up because it was great. She had me laughing from start to finish. It was offensive, unnessary, and completely her. I wouldn't expect anything less. I can't tell you how many times someone looked at me like I was crazy because I couldn't hold my laughter in. Anyway this one is totally worth reading you will breaze right through it and have a great laugh in the pro...more

I was totally disgusted by this book!!! Her SICK HUMOR is cruel and mean! I don't care if she is a so-called comedian, her jokes are pathetic! I'm ashamed that I actually purchased this book. I trashed it cuz that's where it belongs! PLEASE SAVE UR MONEY AND TIME AND DON'T BUY THIS BOOK AND SUPPORT HER CRUELNESS!!! No wonder she hates herself, I would too!! I'm sure her family has to be embarrassed by this terrible thing she calls a book! And she wants to write a second version!! OH HE'LL NO!!!

I.Love.Joan.

Seriously this was so great. It was Joan at her best. We had this on audiobooks for a 5 hour drive and did nothing but giggle. I am glad I am. It the only one who enjoys being 'wanded' at the airport.

I do love how she can give etiquette lessons while dropping the f-bomb. And fair warning - if you have low tolerance for curse words you will have issues with this book. But then again if you do then you probably don't like Joan anyway.

I wanna be her when I grow up!!!

I've been on a comedy kick the last few days - read this and a Chelsea Handler book in one day. It's what I expected from Joan, which is to say, a series of one liners posing as a book. However, Joan is the Queen of one-liners. For the most part, it seemed to be comprised of new material. At the very least, it was old jokes updated to appear new. Having not read anything from Joan before, I found it to be a quick, easy read that made me laugh out loud at times.

Joan Rivers is amazing! I have and will continue to buy and enjoy her books. Laughing at herself like she does takes courage. It takes a heck of a lot more to come up with the jokes she does, though. You have to appreciate her biting candor. I liked the way the book was organized, too. Joan Rivers really does inspire me to laugh through difficult situations and not waste precious time being depressed. Who wants to be the boring one at any party?

OMG if you think Joan Rivers is bad on Fashion Police, wait till you get a load of her here! She rants about everything. If it exists Joan probably hates it and she'll tell you why with her usual snarky, rapid fire delivery. Some of the lines could only come out her (anyone else saying them would get in trouble). Her humor is not for the faint of heart or the easily offended, but if you can't take the heat read it! I cannot tell you how funny this book was! I loved it!
Alan
I thought this was funny, you can tell she tried to give it some structure but a lot of it overlapped. It was like a really long stand up gig!!!
I recently went to see her show and good thing I read this afterwards as a lot of the material from it was in the book. Either way, Joan Rivers is hilarious and I could hear her voice perfectly in this book even if she had one of her illegal immigrant slave children scribe it. (it's a joke from the book)
