I Know A Wee Piggy
by
Kim Norman (Goodreads Author),
Henry Cole
A clever, colorful read-aloud in the tradition of I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly
A fun day at the fair becomes color chaos when one boy's energetic pig gets loose. Upside down, piggy wallows in brown, but that's only the beginning of this cumulative, rhyming text. Soon, he's adding a rinse of red (tomatoes), a wash of white (milk), a pinch of pink (cotton candy), an...more

This is a book about a “wee piggy” who was at the county fair and went “exploring” and found all sorts of colors. Similar to the cadence of I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly, readers can see (and predict) the colors and the repetitions and rhymes. Of course at the end of the book the wee pig has gone pretty much all over the fair and has ended up in the middle of the art contest—and reader’s hearts.

"I Know a Wee Piggy" by Kim Norman and illustrated by Henry Cole is a take-off on "I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly." A really cute take-off.
Young children will love this version based on a piggy escaping at the county fair and running through different colors.
The illustrations are bright and appealing. The rhythm of the story will have young children repeating the lines and asking for the book to be read to them over and over again. It is sure to be a favorite bedtime story.

I picked this one up for the illustrations and that's about all I got. They certainly have a fun lively quality to them with extremely expressive black lines and wiggly shapes filled in with bright and luminescent acrylics. However, some of the movement gets lost in the larger scenes, especially those that bleed out to the edges of the page. My husband and I also found the text a bit obnoxious, although maybe kids would like it for the very reason. There is an expanding refrain- "He wallowed in...more
A little boy takes wee piggy to the county fair and wee piggy is very curious! The piggy wallows in brown mud, red tomatoes, white cows milk, pink cotton candy, yellow egg yokes, black pant, green grass, gray and orange clay, a purple scarf, and blue water...and by the end of the book he has won the first prize blue ribbon!
This is seriously a cute book for kids who are learning colors or for kids who know them well, but are looking for a unique way to celebrate them. I would definitely recommend...more

Cartoony illustrations keep this story whimsical. It follows the cumulative "I know an old lady who swallowed a fly" pattern, without the big ending. Cole and Norman showed restraint in keeping the pig from washing off all the evidence in the water at the end. A couple of pages leave interesting clues in the environmental text (the sign painter), and I ended up wishing there were more going on to the side of the story like this. The only thing to really give a thread was the rhyming words, and s...more

Animal: Pig
Concept: Color
What a delightful read-aloud! With the help of a little piggy and the tune to "I know an old lady who swallowed a fly," Norman presents an assortment of primary colors as the piggy races through the fair adding color on his body as he goes. Every other page, the pig is in the same spot so it's fun to watch the colors add to him. More so, the written words are reflective of their colors (e.g. green is colored green, yellow is colored yellow) connecting print...more

Fun and cute. This screamed storytime to me for the entire book. A fun color activity and a possible feltboard to go along. An adorable little piggy and I enjoyed seeing his antics all over the fair. Though young kids might not grasp the typical fair stuff, they will enjoy him making such a mess! And getting them to guess the next color will either be simple fun or help them with their rhyming skills. I don't know if they'll get the ending, but it is too good to pass up.

This perky piggy gets himself in quite a mess at the fair. After he wallows in brown, pink, red, white and every other color of the rainbow, can he still win a prize? Perhaps, but not the one he was brought there to win. A bouncy read aloud in the style of "I Know an Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly." The author uses rhyme and repetition to introduce color concepts. The illustrations are delightful as piggy romps through the fairgrounds, his owner chasing him the whole time.
This picture book describes how one very fleet piglet causes havoc at the fair as his owner chases after him. As he moves from things that are brown (mud0 to things that are red (tomatoes), readers can see the horrified faces of the passersby and also note the colored fonts used for the colors being described. By the book's end, he is one messy, colorful pig, but he also wins a prize of his own. The acrylic and colored pencil illustrations show his glee in getting messy.
Something fresh related to the concept of colors, a little piggy travels around the fair immersing itself accidentally along the way in a variety of colored substances. Children will enjoy guessing the next color based upon the rhyming text that provides a hint...as well as giggle at the antics of the piggy on his journey. Some of the text has the rhythm of " I know an old lady who swallowed a fly" related to the colors.
I thought this was a great book. The book was about a pig at the county fair that ran through all these colors and at the end he won a blue ribbon. This book did a great job with the colors the pages were bright and detailed. Also the author made the story rhym which most children love in a story book. Out off all the five picture books this one was on top of my list!
In the same writing style as I know an Old Woman who Swallowed a Fly. This tale is about a little piggy that wanted some color, and then some more color as he raced through the county fair. While the illustrations were bright and colorful goodness I can't see someone much higher than a 1st grader being interested in this book; 1st and younger will love it though.
I liked most of this fairly well--the idea is cute, and the illustrations are also cute. The book can be sung to the tune of "There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly," and that's fun. It was the last line that kind of put me off though...I wanted something a little less...abrupt, I suppose. Still, a good book for talking about colors with preschoolers.
I checked this book out to a patron the other week and was pleased to find it in the drop box the other day. This is a great read aloud book that both my mom and Sam my cat enjoyed (well I enjoyed reading it out loud). The illustrations are bright and colorful as is the lesson in colors. I highly recommend this for as a fun story time book.
This is a rockin' romp through the grounds of a fair as a pig on the run introduces readers to his colorful adventures. Kim Norman uses I Know An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly as the template for this delightful read pictured with vibrant, humorous visuals by illustrator Henry Cole.

I Know an Old Lady meets Pete the Cat. Or something like that.
I know a wee piggy who wallowed in green. Oh, what a scene! He'll NEVER get clean! He wallowed in green to go with the black. He wallowed in black to go with the yellow.... And you get the idea.
This cumulative tale is tons of fun for tiny ones learning their colors, whether it's at home on mama's lap or in a classroom full of other littles. Henry Cole's illustrations are lively (and of course, colorful) and paired with Kim Norman's ro...more

At the fair, a piglet has all sorts of fun adding different colors to his skin. Along the way, he causes havoc. Will his owner ever catch him?
What I thought: This is a fun book. I can't wait to use it for story time. I Know a Wee Piggy will be a great addition to my colors story time theme. I love Henry Cole's illustrations--such detail, bright colors, and good use of white space. I can't pick a favorite illustration. This might make a good example of cumulative story to use for Kindergarten Farm, Pig, State Fair, or color units. Could pair with Karen Beaumont's "I Ain't Gonna Paint.."
Great rhyming book about colors in the style of "I Know and Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly." Cute illustrations. A great story time book -- pair with Pete the Cat!
A cumulative, rhyming tale of an ordinary pig who leaps out of his boy's arms at a state fair and wallows in color after color, turning himself into a work of art.
