“Be careful what you wish for.” That’s a warning Dylan Johnson should have listened to. When his mobile tech company is bought out by Mantric Technology, a red-hot firm about to go public, it seems like a dream come true for the young entrepreneur and his partners. But the closer they get to payout, the more uncertain Dylan becomes. Something doesn’t feel right. When his p...more

Cover/Title

Terminal value, a financial term, of a security is the present value at a future point in time of all future cash flows when we expect stable growth rate forever (thank you, Wikipedia!).

Knowing that, I feel the beginning of understanding on why the author chose this title, but it hasn't fully hit my brain yet. I think, instead, the author took a financial term and played with it a little bit. Instead of Terminal Value meaning what it means financially, I think the author took the fin...more

Not bad for a debut novel. Fairly sold mystery set in the context of a technology start-up company acquired by a company that's not what it seems to be. What's that about something that seems too good to be true?

Character development overall is pretty good although there are a few pretty significant characters not developed nearly enough. Improved development of at least two of those characters would have greatly enhanced the story.

Two MAJOR complaints, one content and the other editing. From a...more

I thought this was an excellent read. It definitely captured my interest, as I had to fight to put it down to get some sleep last night, and managed to finish it in its entirety within the 36-hour mark. The story wasn't too technical to where I couldn't follow along, but still had enough jargon throughout to where I felt the characters were actually a part of the world the author was trying to portray. I felt the use of the date/time/location stamps was very helpful in keeping everything straigh...more

I was really interested in the premise of this book. Coming from a Computer Science background, I was looking forward to the details of the “mobile computing business” even though others probably wouldn’t be interested. For those that aren’t fond of technical details, you don’t need to worry, there aren’t many. I did think the process of a start-up being bought seemed quite realistic and accurate. The beginning of the novel was a little slow and there were a couple of awkward passages. Also, som...more

I received this book as a First Reads promotion.
I enjoyed reading the book. The author keeps you guessing as to which characters can be trusted and which ones cannot.
When I first started reading, I thought that I might have trouble enjoying the book because I am not very knowledgeable about technology or Wall Street. I was pleased to find out that, while there were some terms and scenarios I didn't quite comprehend, you don't really need to understand every detail to get the idea of what's going...more

I really enjoyed this debut novel by Thomas Waite (and it's not just because I met the author at my book club). It had a unique storyline, the characters were interesting, and while I did guess the murderer, there were enough red herrings to make you question whether there were others involved.

If you like reading about technology startups and how they are acquired by larger companies, as well mysteries, this is a good book for you. The author definitely did his research and combined with his own...more

Somewhat enjoyable. A by-the-numbers corporate thriller with a few suspenseful scenes and a few instances of almost shockingly bad writing.

An example:

"Heather," he said, gently laying her on the bed, "I want to make love to you."
She stopped and looked up into his eyes. "I want that too."

Are these two attending Antioch College, where the policy requires you to verbalize any act of intimacy before instigating it??

This is an OK mystery. It was a quick read and it did keep me turning the pages. But it didn't really live up to its promise as a technological thriller and the character development was a little weak.

Quick and dirty tech espionage thriller. A fun read that moves along, at times thru awkward writing and questionable tech ideas, never stopping long enough for disbelief to enter in.

topical and entertaining; definitely a quick read. the writing style was a bit amateur but the story line kept me engaged. Good filler, escape novel...
Joy
Good mystery. Some technological business details confusing but otherwise good.

Wow, I read this pretty much in one day... I just couldn't put it down! Great book!

Terminal Value, a first novel by Tom Waite, is a murder mystery based in the world of technology and high finance. As the story starts, four friends Dylan, Tony, Rob and Meredith are selling their start up wireless consulting group to a larger firm that is about to IPO, when a murder interrupts. The characters are believable, the plot intriguing, and the fact that it was set in identifiable Boston made it a lot of fun. It was one of those books I just couldn’t put down

I won this book from Goodreads First Reads.

It was hard for me to get into to. Pretty much right away you are given a ton of background information on all the main characters from the Mobicelus company. It was kind of overwhelming and turned me off from the book for awhile. Other than that it was well-written and an easy read.

First-reads book. I just received this book in the mail today. I let my cats outside for a little and read. I took a break to go inside and then finished the book. This is not a bite-your-fingernails thriller. It's a mystery set within the business world. It's been so long since I took any business or economics so I had to think a little on the business aspect. The book was very readable.

Good book where company is start up tech company who sells to a company who isn't who they think they are. Short on character development. Probably first book for. This author. Don't ned to read another one.although entertaining.

This book started off kind of slow for me, but seemed to get better as it went. not necessarily a book for everyone, but i thought it was well written, easy to read and overall a book i'd recommend.

Thomas Waite is the author of the Amazon bestselling novel, Terminal Value. His original plan was to get his Master's degree in creative writing, and then set the world on fire by writing mysteries and thrillers. Alas, life intervened, and with bills to pay, he was forced into business - ironically as a writer. Tom labored for many years ghost-writing non-fiction for others. While working at one f...more
