A series of gruesome attacks have been sweeping New York City. A teacher in Harlem and two sanitation workers on Wall Street are found dead, their swollen bodies nearly dissolved from the inside out. The predator is a deadly supercolony of ants--an army of one trillion soldiers with razor-sharp claws that pierce skin like paper and stinging venom that liquefies its prey.

meh.
i must confess, i was hoping for something more like this:

as a companion to those wonderful crab books i read. you know, this one and this one.

but this was not as pulpy as i had expected; sadly there's not much of the lurid to be found here.

the dust jacket had such promise:

The desperate mayor turns to the greatest ant expert in the world, Paul O'Keefe, a Pulitzer Prize-winning scientist in an Armani suit. But Paul is baffled by the ants. They are twice the size of any normal ant and have no...more

I picked this book up at the recommendation of my favorite author Scott Sigler, It seemed like a clear winner but for me fell a little short. The book about a killer ant invasion of New York focuses heavily on the science behind these ants while also taking the time for a love story as well as actual invasion for which the story is written.

I am personally not a huge romance fan but the love story didn't detract from the book in the least and despite coming to fruition in a predictable manner wa...more

This was my holiday season guilty pleasure read! It passed through my hands at work (public library) and the cover (thousands of ants) caught my attention. I read the inside jacket and it sounded so bad, I just HAD to read it! Killer ants! Ex-spouses thrown together to save the population! Military officer bent on nuking NYC in order to save the world! How could I resist? Plus, I used to really like ants until about 6 years ago, when I had a small invasion in my house for a couple of months. I h...more

First time author A.J. Colucci hits on nearly every note in this thriller that fondly recalls some of the many 70's films about the world being destroyed by bugs.

In this instance, an alleged eco-terrorist releases a genetically manipulated Queen Ant into the middle of Central Park with hopes that it will not only breed but cause all the millions of ants inhabiting Manhattan island to rise up and overturn the human population.

An entomology team (of course, former lovers) are brought in to try and...more

I WANT to like this book for it's almost campy almost sci-fi qualities, but it felt like everything "The Colony" wanted to be was lacking in execution. It had a few quality moments but they were too few and far between to really make the book have a meaningful impact on me.

The end was very anticlimactic and played it way too safe, it could be me but I don't like when everything is wrapped up in a perfect little ending moment, not after all hell as broken loose. Someone else on here said it woul...more

ScienceThrillers review: Why is it so much fun to devastate New York City? Since King Kong first had a go at Manhattan mayhem, NYC has repeatedly been the target of novelists and filmmakers bent on releasing killer viruses, ghosts, zombies, natural disasters, alien invasions…

Continuing this tradition with a new entomologic twist, The Colony by AJ Colucci is a debut science thriller in which genetically-altered killer ants take on the monster role. Released in the strong opening scene by a derang...more

I am not a fan of insects but now I cannot even look at a common black ant without shivering just a little! The colony is a classic horror story in the shadow of greats such as Stephen King and Michael Crichton and it delivers a stinging blow quickly and almost on every page. Imagine that a fire ant is bred with a new strain of fierce killer ant and then that super ant is unleashed upon New York City. Entomologist pair Paul and Kendra (divorced but reunited for a cause) are called in to stop the...more

Irresistible novel. Huge killer ants invade and swarm in NYC. Military wants to nuke Manhattan. scientists race to avoid that extreme solution and look for the queen to control the ants. What Jaws did for sharks, this does for Ants. Moral: don't genetically alter nature. Nature is in a precarious balance. Man is arrogant trying to make ants weapons of mass destruction. Leave nature and the earth alone. Compelling reading, irresistible. Like cat nip to a cat. Highly recommended. Edge of your seat...more

I won a copy of this book from a Goodreads First Reads Giveaway for review.

Weaponized ants. Government secrets. A panicked, dying public.

And the scientists who can save them.

It's a sci-fi thriller that’s more Hollywood than pulp fiction. To me it’s more Michael Crichton than Stephen King because I wasn’t afraid to sleep or wondering what sick mind came up with this nightmare.

My list of things to kill without mercy and to the very last one:

1.) Bed bugs

has now grown to include:

2.) Some species o

Fanatic genericist releases a new"killer' queen ant in Manhattan and then kills himself. Two years later bodies are starting to turn up at an alarmin rate that appear to have been stung, eaten and devoured by ants. Government agencies turn to leading ant expert Paul O'keefe and his ex wife Kendra Hart. Kendra may have found a solution that will kill off the queen thus killing the ant slaves. Of course there is some back story with the reason for Paul & Kendra to be divorced and one of the re...more

This was a great fun little guilty pleasure. Short and sweet, the book can be finished in a few hours. Feels like a nice mash-up of Michael Crichton and Stephen King, filled with gory death-by-killer-ant mayhem, a crazed military officer, and a race against time by scientists, all while New York City is under attack by a new species of killer ant. Nothing deep or memorable here, but a lot of fun to read.

3.5 stars -- As the book jacket suggests, the author must be the love child of Michael Crichton and Stephen King. Super-colonies of weaponized ants, scientist action heroes, gruesome deaths, and the imminent nuclear annihilation of Manhattan -- what more could you ask for? I for one kept thinking that the ants were super-sized. No, there are just a lot of them. Do not read while eating.

Amazingly, I did enjoy this book, even though it was about some big huge nasty, genetically engineered ants with an appetite for human flesh! in a huge government underground bunker, Kendra and a few scientists attempt to find a way to kill the ants before Mamhattan gets blown to bits. it had the right amount of suspense without being too hokey, kept me reading!
Erin
I picked up this book at the library because I enjoy Stephen King's and Michael Crichton's books so much, and this book promised to be a mix of both author's styles and types of stories. While not as well-written, it was a thrilling story and successfully horrifying.

I found this book in the goodreads giveaway, and I’m not sure yet if I was lucky to find it at my library!

This novel is a very suspenseful story that teaches you about what can happen when man trys to manipulate nature. This great read actually sort of frightened me. I believe that I will never be able to walk by an anthill again without flinching. I liked the variety of perspectives including the different victims and occasionally the ants. I would just like to thank FirstReads and St. Martin's Press for awarding me this free book!

Started off well enough but was overly predictable and in the end just an average read. I look forward to the SciFi channel making it a movie.
Wendopolis
An entertaining, quick and engrossing read. It's like what's called a beach novel, I guess.
Randall Yelverton
Not great, but some of the ant attack scenes are deliciously creepy. Characters are lousy.
Connie Murphy
It sucks you in from page one, then sadly loses it's way, with a very anti-climatic ending...
Steven
Fast paced and very entertaining. Very good first book, look forward to the next one.

The premise was better than the execution. Would make a pretty cool movie though.
Kathy Ursenbach
really scary read, I read it while recovering from the flu, a great escape!
Angela

Very true to style. A fun distraction from reality.
