Being on time is an art—an art most of families have yet to master. From spilling coffee to misplacing keys, we’ve all dealt with the many things that can derail our morning routines. This humorous depiction of chaotic mornings is oh, so true.

Kate and her two children, Nate, and his older sister, Maddie, have all overslept. How will they EVER make it to school and work on...more

I really enjoyed reading this story. It was a story about Kate and Nate waking up late causing them to be late for everything planned in their day. I feel like i could really relate to this book when i wake up late and everything just seems to go wrong. The colors in the illustrations were very vibrant, and I could almost feel the frustrations of the characters going through everything as they were running late. This story can teach a very important lesson to always wake up on time to avoid unex...more

Age: Kindergarten-1st grade

The premise of the story is unique and relatable, especially the ending (running late with kids in tow) but the rhyme scheme is so drearily forced (A, B, C, B). I hate when authors use useless words to simply force a rhyme such as:
Nate says, "Wait! I need my bunny!"
Kate regards him with dismay.
"Just one minute, I'll be speedy...."
Kate gives up. "That's fine, okay."

The use of excessive punctuation also creates havoc on the flow of the story. Sometimes the syllabic count...more

If you want to rhyme, please make sure your lines scan. Love how Yaccarino solves the problem of Maddie not being in the title or in most of the verses (because she doesn't rhyme with Kate or Nate or late) by showing her as having her act more together than the other two: She is out of the shower when her mom and brother are waking up, and already dressed and at the table when they are scrambling for something to eat.

While I didn't really love anything about this book, I found the concept of the mother being named and acting as just as much of a main character as the children really kind of refreshing. The story is one that's been done a lot--the ending won't come as a huge surprise to most adults--but kids will probably find it entertaining.

Enjoyable story about the craziness that nearly all of us go through during our morning ritual to get out the door to work and school. Funny ending (which has actually happened to me on two or three occasions). Rhyming text. Illustrations are in bright primary colors and simply drawn which makes it great for read-alouds. Recommended.

Cute. Very poetic language which is rhythmic enough to bring in readers who may not be old enough to understand the content. The punch line makes it a great choice for Saturday storytime and children (and adults) will relate to the concept of rushing to get ready for school/work and the chaos inherent in the situation.

I like the idea of this (although it is over done...they hurry to get ready for school on Saturday). But seriously! It is called "Kate and Nate are Running Late" HOWEVER there is another person in the family. Sister Maddie is just as much a part of this story. She apparently just isn't important enough to be part of the title.

I really enjoyed this book. I love Dan Yaccarino's drawings, they reminded me alot of Boy&Bot (which is good since he illustrated that as well.) The story was funny with several twists and the rhythm of the couplets was great. Can't wait to share this with my students tomorrow!

Kate wakes up late and has to rush around to get herself and her son Nate ready to go. They go through all the morning chores and routines but when they get to school they realize it is Saturday. Fun picture book that shows what is probably your average morning routine.

Those of us who are constantly running late will recognize ourselves in this one. I am a big fan of Yaccarino's artwork, but the rhymes here don't quite scan (and I'm not sure that a rhyming element is even necessary).
Rachel
A story about a hurried morning. The flow of the story is a little off for me since the mother is referred to both as Kate and as the mother and the text does not always have a solid rhythm.

Wouldn't use for preschool storytime, but could use for 1-3 graders. Funny ending and they can probably relate.
Kay
Grandson Nate REALLY liked this book about a family's mishaps rushing to get to school on time!
Beverly
I like Yaccarino's retro illustrations as the family rushes to get ready for school and work

Short and sweet: Loved this fun twist on getting ready in the morning!

Rushing to and fro doesn't come off as a whole lotta fun.

The rhyming is really funky. I have no idea how to read this aloud. Also, what is with the title? Kate is mom, but there are two children: Nate and Maddie, who is just as much a part of the story as her brother but got completely cut from the title!
I love the endpages. I wish the whole book was colored like they are with two color spreads. Still, I like the simple, retro style of the illustrations and the bright color scheme. I want someone to redecorate my house to match this color scheme!
