Most of the time, when I read a good book I appreciate the story that the author was able to create. On occasion, I read a book that has a poor writing style but a good story. I finish the book with only mild disappointment about the style and probably never read the books written by that author again. When I come across a book that has a great writing style, I almost always enjoy it regardless of the story (I've even read some textbooks that I enjoyed purely for the style).

Death’s Apprentice: K. W. Jeter and Gareth Jefferson Jones

There are many people we meet throughout our lives but one you definitely want to avoid and that would be DEATH. The other is Nathaniel is assistant who, although quite adapt at taking souls and ending lives seems to be rethinking his present job after ten years. For some reason the joy of death has seemed to have gone out of his deceased life as we meet both Nathaniel and Death about the take the life of a young stockbroker. The event is...more

This book totally sucked me in, especially once I got a few chapters in and figured out who everyone was and what part they were meant to play in the narrative. I found myself annoyed whenever I had to put the book down; I didn't want to stop reading, even after I finished it. I'm now impatiently waiting for the next installment in the Grimm City series.

The characters are so interesting, and the way their individual plots intertwine is very well done. I found myself cheering when these character...more

When I first laid eyes on Death’s Apprentice it was the cover that lured me in, but we all know pretty covers doesn’t equal a good or even descent book. So I did what I always do in such cases when I’m enthralled by sight with a book, read the first page. Liked what I read and added it to my burgeoning stack of library goodies. On first impression I had the idea that this book was about an apprenticeship to death. As the tiltle suggested but after the first chapter it all becomes subplots separa...more

Death comes for one who does not want to go. This one does the unthinkable, he trades his son for more living time. His son, Nathaniel, becomes Death's apprentice. He works happily beside Death, learning is trade until something becomes known that will force him to face what he wants to be. The devil has plans, his plans involved horrible torture, scarifies and a bleak future for the human world. His minions are ready to start a war, and Nathaniel may be the one who can change to outcome.

I received this book free as a Goodreads First Read, and I was excited to pick it up as a Halloween-esque read. I haven't delved into a lot of works by Brothers Grimm outside of the usual well-known fairytales, so the majority of stories that are referenced in this book are really unfamiliar to me. That being said, the premise of this book was very interesting. At its heart, Death's Apprentice is a classic story of good versus evil; three unlikely champions take on the Devil for personal reasons...more

As an avid fan of Richard Kadrey's Sandman Slim series and Kenneth Oppels teenage Frankenstien books, I am always a bit more critical of novels that take already established stories and take them to another way of being.
I am happy to say that Death's Apprentice does this and succeeds on all levels. It takes characters from the Grimm Fairy Tales and puts them in a fresh setting with new challenges and adventures. Keep in mind this is much like the original Grimm stories and not the watered down D...more

This book has many interesting concepts: the Devil has a city that he runs and wheels and deals with souls there, there is a prophecy of his downfall, Death is a literal figure and he has an apprentice. That's about it. Interesting ideas. The beginning is rather confusing to a first time reader, and if I hadn't been stuck in a room for 12 hours that day I probably would have stopped reading after the first couple of chapters. There are a lot of different character to follow in this book, which i...more

The beginning is kind of slow; however, after the first few chapters, the book becomes a page-turner. The author vividly describes each fight scene in a realistic manner. Hank is my favorite character because he is straightforward and rational. I am a little disappointed that more information wasn't included regarding his background. Overall, it's nice to read a book that actually has a good story with great action without a sappy romance. I'm looking forward to the sequel!

Received this book as a Goodreads First Read.

I think this is more of a guy book. I had to wrestle my husband for the right to read it first. There is an astounding amount of blood and gore in this book (at least for me). As someone very familiar with Grimm's (and other) faerietales and folklore most of what is mentioned in this book is very recognizable. I found it a little difficult to start, but once the story starts flowing it is impossible to put down. Having finished the book I can't wait t...more

Won at firstreads.
It is perfection in writing. The plot and the characters are amazing. Normally I don't like a books with more than one POV but in this book it didn't bother it. It actually worked in this book. When I first started the book I was thinking: where are we going with this? But that the stories and characters are brought together well. Each characters are unique and have their own way of dealing with they faults.the twist was really unexpected in a good way. Waiting for second one....more

I can't say for sure if I will read another novel set in this series if there is one written. There was nothing wrong with the story I guess but it almost made me think of Sin City in some not the noir atmosphere or ultra violence but more the thinness of the characters. It is a very visual narrative and vividly described but I just didn't connect with any of the characters and that always makes it difficult to be immersed in the story. Its very fast paced and straightforward with just about all...more

I just read the first chapter, and this looks like it's going to be really good.

Think I was let down by listening to it. There was a LOT of action which probably would have been fun to READ. But when you listen to these kinds of fight scenes your brain goes Characters X&Y are fighting now and then supplements descriptions with Charlie Browns parents filler until the action is over.

Other than that the characters are kind of flat but interesting concepts. There's the obligatory girls fight. And the tag about Grimm city not being the Grimm fairy tales you remember is beca...more

First I would like to thank St. Martin's Press for sending me this copy. The concept of this story seemed interesting, a bit different from a lot of books in this genre. As I began reading I found this to be true. We all know the battle between good and evil but I feel that the authors did a great job of bringing something new, a twist on this timeless idea.
The story is very well written with plenty of action and graphic description. The only downfall That I find is the characters are kind of...more

Apparently this is the first book in a series. I am going to have to read the next book in order to accurately judge this one. It ended in a way that makes me wonder how can it be followed. When I got to the end I actually wondered if I had read the last book in the Grimm City novels. Basically it was a solid book but the ending seemed to final to be in a series. I will definitely have to update my review.

An interesting urban fantasy with entertaining (if tortured) characters that feels like a cross between a Sin City graphic novel and a Neil Gaiman book.

Note/disclaimer: I was given an advanced reading copy and asked to provide a cover blurb for this book. My blurb is: "A dark tale of Death, the Devil, and destiny." — Jennifer Estep, New York Times bestselling author of the Elemental Assassin series

Slow start, but once you are invested in the troubled characters, it's hard to put down. A little bloody for my taste, but overall pretty good. Action sequences were written as if you were actually there.

Now I have to go back and read some of the original Grimm stories (apparently, it's been a while).

Interesting take on the mythos here. It says it's a bit of spin on the Brothers Grimm fairytales, but I see more Christian overtones than anything. I'm not familiar with a Death's apprentice Grimm story though.

Profoundly theological, but not in an oppressive way. Some great lines, and thought-provoking plot. Lots to think about. Highly recommended.

I won this book as a first-reads giveaway, ARC. This book reads like an action, adventure movie with horror. This is not the type of book I typically read. I enjoyed this book, but it lacked depth in certain parts. (Like I said, it's an action movie.) Gory and bloody in parts. The fight scenes were very descriptive and written well. I could picture them easily. I found I wanted to keep reading the story to find out what happens. It ends with a lead in to the second book of the series. I actually...more

pretty mediocre - not sure I would bother with another 'grimm city' novel -

I wanted to like this book - the idea was a good one - but didn't hold up. Characters are slim and tale confusing, and not in a good way. Just sort of a mess.

The characters were interesting, the plot was sub par...the action was great if not a llittle disorienting, and the ending was made me cry. I'd read the sequel should there ever be one.

I received a copy of the book through a Goodreads ARC Giveaway.

The plot was good and the characters were well-developed, but there was so much detail and diction packed into this novel that I had to keep re-reading pages to understand what was happening. But, overall, I liked it!
Karla
Extremely average & very simplistic (concepts, characters etc). I won't be reading anything else by this author.
