My opinion: Let me preface this review by stating that I have read every book in this series, some several times. On that note, I must also state that Dr. Gerritsen is probably one of the most character and storyline driven authors I have ever had the pleasure of reading. What I mean by this is that this is not a series that one can pick up a single book and have an excellent understanding of how incidents in the story reflect back to other novels and fo...more

Simply delicious to the last drop! Tess Gerritsen always delivers a great read, but Last to Die is an especially tasty treat. Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles are at their best in this blood chilling tale about three teens who have each survived two massacres involving their families and their foster families. Leave it to Jane and Maura to discover that the latest multiple homicide in Boston leaving 14-year-old Teddy Clock as the sole survivor is far from an unlucky home invasion. Teddy along with t...more

I'll be narrating this title. I've narrated two of the Rizzoli & Isles series and I can't tell you how much I LOVE this series and the characters. So excited to see what happens next.

I was disappointed in Tess Gerritsen's latest R & I book. I couldn't wait to read this but fairly quickly felt that some things were lacking--one being Gerritsen's prose, which is usually dense and more evocative than the language used to render other thrillers out there on the market. In fact, within ten pages she repeated the line "Come with me if you want to live." Where have I heard that before? Terminator, where it's been done to death.

The book, off to a rocky start, improved after the...more

"Here's to you, Nicholas Clock."

Tess Gerritsen has done it again in another fabulous installment in the ever popular Rizzoli and Isles Thriller series. The story goes of three Children who suffer the agony of having there parents and foster parents brutally killed. In every case after the deaths a mystery blonde women helps them before authorites arrive. After the deaths of the foster parents they go to Evansong wich is a boarding school that specialises in educating kids trying to cope with emo...more

Last to Die, Rizzoli & Isles # 10, is a full throttle foot on the gas mystery/thriller that will leave readers gasping for air by the time they reach the end of this book. Gerritsen's writing and world building has once again left me on the edge of my seat wondering who the killer was and why they were after three teenagers who seemingly have lost everything they cherished.

The basic synopsis of this story is that there are three unrelated teenagers...more

There is something mysterious and magical about the beginning of a Rizzoli and Isles mystery. Gerritsen is a master at setting up a mysterious situation. Her new mystery has multiple murders, a castle deep in the woods of Maine and the dark cool brooding of Maura Isles. And then there is the down to earth no nonsense Jane Rizzoli to balance it all out. It takes pages to tie it all together but that is the whole fun of reading one of these things. :)

Another page-turner by one of my favourite authors... :)

Very interesting story and never would have guessed who was behind those murders. I also loved the quiet moments between Jane and Maura...so overdue! Can't wait to see how the friendship between those two develops from there and I also can't wait to read more about Jane and her crazy family! ;)

Synopsis (from bn.com): For the second time in his short life, Teddy Clock has survived a massacre. Two years ago, he barely escaped when his entire family was slaughtered. Now, at fourteen, in a hideous echo of the past, Teddy is the lone survivor of his foster family’s mass murder. Orphaned once more, the traumatized teenager has nowhere to turn—until the Boston PD puts detective Jane Rizzoli on the case. Determined to protect this young man, Jane discovers that what seemed like a coincidence...more

As a prologue and scattered throughout the narrative is the story of the hunt and capture of a terrorist. You really don't find out how it relates to the current story until near the end of the book. The major story line involves three seemingly unrelated massacres of families where the only survivor is a child who is then placed in foster care, only to have their foster families murdered, as well. The first case involves 13-year-old Claire Ward who survives a car crash that kills her foster par...more

Being a fan of Tess Gerritsen's for such a long time, I am always glad to see another book come out. I have actually read everything she has written, including the romance novels with which she started out her publishing career.

The Rizzoli and Isles series, which is now also a television show, has been some of my favorite books by her. The chemistry between the two female leads is great, even in their very broad differences. And it...more

‘Last to Die’ is the latest novel in Tess Gerritsen’s Rizzoli/Isles detective series. Beginning with four uniquely common paths merging into a commonly unique highway, the reader begins to discern the shared experiences of a set of kids as their stories unfold. They are joined together with the suspected help of the Mephisto Club, the title of the author’s sixth story in the series. Our police detective and medical examiner are interweaved to provide the reader with knowledge you hope to will be...more

I confess from the moment I picked up TG's first book and read it straight through, I became a fan forever. All she has done is improve to a level of plotting and storying telling that is gripping, compelling and addictive.
I don't summarize plots, but I can tell you it is a doozie. This may be TG's best book ever in the Rizzoli and Isles series. And, PLEASE, don't confuse these books with the TV show, they are the same only in the names of the characters.
I watch the show, kind of like it and my...more

#10 in the Jane Rizzoli & Maura Isles series. This entry leans heavily on continuing the story of "Rat" Perkins from Ice Cold (2010). If you haven't read it, you'll miss out on some references, but there is plenty new going on. Some 'somebodies' capture a baddie, code-named 'Icarus'; a NH house goes up in flames; a car in Ithaca, NY is ambushed; eventually these events will all come together for Jane Rizzoli with a home invasion in Boston. The plot has twist upon twist and the author dares y...more

Last to Die, by tess Gerritsen, b-plus, narrated by Tanya Edy, Produced by Brilliance Audio, downloaded from audible.com.

Tenth in the Rizolli Isles mysteries. Jane and Maura become involved in a crime which, on the surface, involves one child, but expands to involve several families. Three children survive when their families are slaughtered. In each case, in different parts of the country, they are placed in foster homes, and in each case the foster families are massacred as well. They all end...more

I haven't been as fortunate as other readers to read this book in the proper order of the series; that notwithstanding, I was able to follow the character development (which Gerritsen does an outstanding job with) and did pick up nuances and references from earlier books about Maura, Jane, Father Brophy, Anthony Sansone and Julian. This is a book I couldn't let go of. Three children find themselves at Eversong private school where all the children enrolled are in need of emotional support, and s...more

Well, this was such a page turner that rather than prepare for Thanksgiving dinner, I sat in a chair and did not get up until I finished (fortunately, I still had a day left to prepare). This is the latest in the Rizzoli-Isles series. I prefer the books to the TV series because the books meet my mental image of the characters far more than the actresses on the screen do. Also, Maura Isles is not the annoying pedant that she is on television.

This story involves three families who are massacred, e...more

One of the few series I follow would be the Rizzoli and Isles series by Tess Gerritsen (I can thank Jurong NLB for that :D ). And while it's been a while, I'm glad that I read Last to Die, the latest in the series.

Last to Die follows three children, whose families are killed within a week of each other. And then their foster families are killed. Rizzoli doesn't believe the "official" solution (that Crowe created), so she investigates on her own, with Frost by her side. Isles, is pulled in throug...more

The TV show has spoiled this series. Books are always better, but after seeing the TV shows, it kind of messes with your own perceptions. You constantly compare them. Story was excellent; as always, a little far-fetched. Maybe too much time in between books -- couldn't remember some of the past details of previous stories. I guess that's why I enjoy finding an author I haven't read and going through their list of books to read one after another. Definitely a good book -- kept my interest through...more

My actual rating for this book was 4.5 stars.

Three young teenagers from different parts of America survived two years ago when the rest of their family was murdered. Now they are survivors again while their foster families are being killed. In order to keep them safe, the three young teenagers are brought to Evensong, a boarding school for traumatised children run by the Mephisto Club in a remote part of Maine.
But, the police in Boston who are investigating the last of the killings don’t know ab...more

Here's what I think of Gerritsen's five latest R&I books:

The Mephisto Club. Intriguing, but not terribly memorable.
The Keepsake. My memories of this one are vague, because not much from that one stuck in my mind.
Ice Cold. Truly awesome one, very cinematic. I would love to see that story get featured in a two-episode arc of the TV series, but it might be too cost-prohibitive, production-wise.
The Silent Girl. About on a level with The Mephisto Club, but coming after Ice Cold that's not really...more

Last to Die: Tess Gerritsen

Monsters are born everyday and of course they don’t deserve to live. Those that prey on other people do evil things and some go after them as they did the person they referred to as Icarus in the prologue of this book. A man referred to as Icarus someone with children although young, still was cruel, a monster as our narrator states and the reason why he and others were in Rome.

Thirteen-year-old Claire Ward was supposed to have a date with death. So, how does she esca...more

Three children, orphaned twice over, first their birth families, then three years later the families that took them in. Detective Jane Rizzoli doesn’t believe in coincidences but must stand back whilst Crowe chases after the wrong guy. Maura meets two of the children at Evensong when she is visiting Rat at the mysterious boarding school. It would turn out that all the children there have something in common but before Maura can convince Rat to leave, she and Jane start to put together the pieces...more

Explosions rock the night. A woman clad in black appears. A family is murdered, leaving a sole survivor yet again. So begins “Last to Die,” the tenth fast-paced installment in the famed “Rizzoli and Isles” series by Tess Gerritsen. Fans new and old will not be disappointed with this absorbing thriller that plumbs the depths of friendship and massacre. Boston PD homicide detective Jane Rizzoli soon finds herself escorting a traumatized young boy to Evensong, a fortress-like school for children wh...more

Last to Die is a complex story with multiple plot lines -- a couple that reach back into older books in the series, and a few more than introduce new characters. This is a challenge that would defeat many novelists, but Gerritsen handles it all deftly.

So you've got the friendship between Rizzoli and Isles, which has matured somewhat -- and a good thing, too, Rizzoli's family which provides a counterpoint to the dark and grizzly plot, and a very evocative setting: a school called Evensong in Mai...more

I thought Last to Die was a great addition to Gerritsen's Rizzoli and Isles series. I like the character of Jane Rizzoli more with each book, and Maura Isles is a great counterpart for her. The storyline in this one was fast moving and had plenty of action. It kept me guessing and changing my mind about what I thought was actually happening. I would have liked to see a bit more of Gabriel Dean, as I love seeing him working on cases also, but other than that, the story worked for me on all levels...more
