I loved this book growing up. It was my first Judy Blume novel, and it captured perfectly the world of preteen girls that I was in the midst of experiencing. I wanted to be just like those girls. The emotionally difficult situations of changing friendships and the breakdown of the Hirschs' marriage struck a chord as well. The one real flaw is that the ending just seems to suddenly appear. It doesn't seem to really tie things up at all. I never really minded it much though, other than that I want...more
I'm mad as hell that Goodreads doesn't have the cover of the version that I read, because I liked that cover a LOT. It's the one that has Stephanie, Rachel and Alison in someone's room (Rachel's?) and they are laughing and someone's holding up one of the purple t-shirt that say "FRIENDS" in yellow letters. So nostalgic. But, I digress.
Anyway. I think this was my favorite Judy Blume novel.

I could barely stomach this particular novel. It wasn’t disgusting, if that’s what you’re thinking. I was nauseated. Instead, I was overcome by a sudden case of ADD during chapter one. It lasted through the entire 296 pages. I had to literally force myself to keep reading. My mind wandered to hundreds of different things, some as mundane as my leg itching. Every few chapters, I had to walk around just to help concentrate. Why did I even need to concentrate, though? NOTHING HAPPENED. The book was...more

The summary at the top is what I read on the back of the book. If the book had been from Rachel's point of view the summary would have been correct. However the book is from Stephanie's point of view and she doesn't realize there is a problem until Rachel and she have a fight on page 241.
Most of Stephaine's story is focused on the separtion and possible divorce of her parnets. That however did not come into play until page 120. Till then the story is just a build up of Stephanie and Rachel meet...more

Read this one when I was maybe only a year or two older than the characters. At the time, I was a member of a BFF Triangle, much like in the book, so I really related to how the dymanics of such a group can shift on a daily basis. Sometimes it was Lisa and I; Sometimes it was Lisa and Theresa; Sometimes it was the three of us; Sometimes... You get the idea. Anyway, I remember reading, re-reading, and enjoying this book many times before it finally got lost somewhere along the way. Most likely my...more
I Loved this book it was the best. Judy bloom is my all time favorite author.
There were three main characters Stephanie, Rachel, and Alison. They all met before school started and they became bestfriends. They didnt know if they could all be friends at once but they talked and realized that they could.
Stephanie's father was away for work and for thanksgiving. On Thanksgiving day Stephanie realized that her father and mother were sperating for a while. Stephanie's father thought her mother told...more

Judy Blume mainly writes books about young adult issues. This book deals with divorce, adoption, parent pregnancy, and loss of friendship. Many young girls will relate to what Stephanie and her friends are going through in “Just as Long as We’re Together”. I remember my friends going through many of these issues during middle school. This is a good realistic story for young adults.

The issue of being left out when it comes to having more then just one best friend is always an issue and when it comes to Stephanie, Allison and Rachel, it is no different. Stephanie and Rachel have been best friends for ages, telling each other their secrets and about their life at home with their families and they always have the funnest times and now they are going to Junior high school together. Then a new girl moves in, her name is Allison who was adopted when she was younger. Because Rach...more
What an adorable book!
I've never read a Judy Blume book before, and now I'm kicking myself that I didn't read them as a 12-13 year old. Being 24 (and realizing with a sinking feeling that 12 years was half my life ago) I sometimes forget what it was like to be in middle school. The responsibilities and dramatics of being an adult are no less daunting than the responsibilities and dramatics of being a young teenager: the helplessness of watching your parents relationship falling apart, hating an...more

Just as Long as We’re Together
No one portrays a better example of middle school friendships and drama than Judy Blume, author of "Just as Long as We’re Together." Judy Blume does an excellent job describing what young teenage girls experience and how they change during their years in middle school. This nonfiction novel takes place in and around J.E. Fox Junior High School. Stephanie Hirsch narrates it during her 7th grade year. The story centers on the relat...more

I liked how the story made me feel like I was really there. Judy Blume did a very good job especially when it comes to the conversations of the girls. It's like they were speaking for themselves! The way they talk (how Blume has written it) was truly convincing that the characters were teens. I kind of feel depressed for Stephanie and Alison because Rachel seems to be the perfect girl. I just didn't like how Rachel treated...more

This book is about Stephanie Hirsch, who is nearly thirteen and is about to start middle school. She has a couple of problems that come with that. She has a new friend, and as she spends time with that new friend, it feels like she is spending less time with her best friend. Probably the biggest problem on her plate is that her parents are separated. This is a big transition for Stephanie, who is also the narrator of the book. Her parents have always been together, and the fact that Stephanie's...more
The last Judy Blume I read, 'Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret,' I didn't find that much fascinating and since then I haven't picked up her work for a while although I know she is one of the most popular teenage story writers.
Then I found one of my students became a big fan of her books and she was reading her books nonstop. From her reviews I was interested in this title and I was able to see why she was hooked. Yes, Judy Blume is a really talented storyteller. She built up very real chara...more

Rachel and Stephanie are best friends and have been so since the 2nd grade. Now they’re preparing to enter 7th grade, and nothing can come between them, or so they think. Alison moves into their neighborhood just before school starts, and she and Steph become fast friends. Of course, the girls include Rachel in their friendship; for a while, the girls make quite a trio.
But it can’t stay that way forever; most relationships don’t. Just ask Steph, whose parents are separating. With all of the uphe...more

This book was one of the first books that I really enjoyed. One reason is because the climax is about friendship. The second reason is because of how Judy Blume, once again, lay out this story. It is like she was in the actual scene. For example, if the characters were at school. she would show hate or annoyance towards the teacher, which is what the majority of us feel like. Also, if the character is upset, she would cry and think similar things that we think.

I re-read this last night because I finally found the sequel (which I haven't read before). I'd forgotten how much I loved this one when I was 10 or 11. It really does speak to girls at that age about friendships and just every day life problems.
I'd forgotten how many things in my life I associate with this book. I remember when I read it, I had NO IDEA who Richard Gere was, then I became familiar with him through his role in Pretty Woman and thinking "Damn, he's not an age appropriate crush at...more

I couldn't decide for a while whether to give this three stars or four. It's a great book, but it's more subtle than a lot of other Judy Blume. But then, thinking about it, I kept remembering bits and pieces that I was anticipating as I read, that I remembered from the first time I'd picked it up, more than 10 years ago. And I figured if I remembered little things -- if they helped me understand my own teenage experience -- than that was the mark of a good book. And this is a good book. I think...more
I really liked this book I think it is great for people our age and it is something that we, well I, can relate to. Especially the annoying brother. Its about Rachel Robinson, a thirteen year old straight A+ student and a gifted musician with a different outlook on life, who is not surprised when she hears that her brother Charles has been expelled from his boarding school in Vermont and has to come home and live with Rachel, her sister Jessica and her mum and dad. What she didn't expect is that...more
Told by Stephanie as the first person narrato this is a story of friendship.
Stephanie and Rachel have ben best friends since second grade. When Alison moves in Stephanie wants to have more than one best friend and add Alison to their friendship.
Between this new dynamic, starting junior high, finding interest in boys and dealing with her father living away from the family on extended buisness Steph has a lot on her plate.

Judy Blume never fails. She will forever have a special place in my heart and bookshelf. Her YA novels just encompass everything YA and are timeless. And they’re not trying hard to be all profound and difficult to follow because she just tells the story as it is and it’s still as effective. This book is another example. It’s a simple friendship story: two best friends adjusting to make room for a third friend into their relationship, there’s a couple of misunderstandings, a bit of boys along the...more
Just as long as we're together, by Judy Blume, is a realistic fiction, young adult novel. I personally thought that this book was really good. I understood what I was reading throughout the entire story. I like how Judy Blume wrote a good novel, that I could relate to. This book is about three seventh grade girls named Stephanie, Rachel, and Allison. It deals with crushes, jealousy, divorice, and competiton. Judy Blume did a fantastic job touching all of the topics that middle school girls deal...more
This book was my teenage bible whilst I was growing up during my difficult teenage years. I think that it is amazing for an adult to be able to capture exactly what teenagers go through and for that understanding, I do thank Judy Blume from the bottom of my heart. She is a very accomplished writer for young adults.

Just as Long as We're Together was a sweet coming of age story about young girls and the trials of middle school. For years Rachel and Stephanie were inseparable, but things started to change when they entered 7th grade. Their friendship was challenged when Alison, the new girl, moves into the neighborhood. You follow Rachel as she is dealing with the unusual circumstances at home, a jealous friend and her journey into womanhood.

I decide to read this book because I have read some books by Judy Blume and liked them. This book will fit into two categories the female author category and the book with themes related to those we have been doing in class. I think I will put it into the second category I mentioned. It fits into this category because it is about friendship and moving schools. I found this book interesting because it was something I could relate too. My favourite quote from this book is ' ' because . I learnt ho...more
I never read this Blume book when it came out (1987 I think)as I had already moved on to more adult books. I decided to check it out after reading the essay about it in the non fiction book: Everything I Needed to About Being a Girl I Learned From Judy Blume. Reading it now meant alot to me. The friendship between Rachel and Stephanie made me think about my own friendships in my life. Like all Judy Blume books, her characters deal with and handle very realistic situations. Any one who has ever h...more

Judy Blume spent her childhood in Elizabeth, New Jersey, making up stories inside her head. She has spent her adult years in many places doing the same thing, only now she writes her stories down on paper. Adults as well as children will recognize such Blume titles as: Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret; Blubber; Just as Long as We're Together; and the five book series about the irrepressible Fu...more
