My experience of this book vacillated back and forth between "it was ok" and "really liked it" but I must admit that I ended up at "really liked it." The last chapter being a sort of trippy reader of the abduction phenomenon was absolutely fantastic, and the fast and loose (and like I said, "trippy") handling of this material, was itself a kind of explanation for why this was such a perfect way of handling this type of material.

I received this book as a Goodreads Giveaway.
THE GOOD:
Awesome Latina protagonist!
Artwork is realistic. Characters have distinct facial features, heights, etc, which is helpful given that the majority of the cast are middle-aged white men.
Proper anatomy! Huzzah!
No excessive sexualization of characters. Nudity/skin shown is logical (character is in shower, nightgown, whatever) and poses are natural, rather than contorted into a pin-up pose. Arcadia dresses like a politician, with a minimum of cle...more

Close encounters of the first-LADY kind.
Arcardia Alvarado is the demecratic candidate for the United States presidency. She's pretty amazing for several reasons--she's a woman, she's a minority, she's divorced--and she thinks she's been abducted by aliens. Oh, but oops. Nobody's supposed to know that.

I was super-excited to win an ARC of Saucer City because it's a graphic novel and graphic novels are awesome! Unfortunately, they also tend to be somewhat expensive--especially full-color beauts lik...more

Pretty much any book from DC's Vertigo interests me since they cover territory you won't find anywhere else. Still, the first book of any new series needs to do an excellent job of hooking me to continue, though. Saucer Country's first volume has plenty of intriguing ideas and memorable scenes. Enough is given to the reader to get one thinking without revealing everything. It almost feels like an unreliable narrator except it's not first person. And like any good alien abduction story, you're le...more
First Reads Review - Saucer Country Vol 1
So I honestly don't know exactly what to make of this. I mean, I like it. The writing and the art are solid, and it's quite weird. But beyond that, I'm not entirely sure what to make of it. I suppose I should explain a bit more than that, though, as DC was nice enough to give me a free copy through First Reads. I guess I signed up for it largely because of Paul Cornell, whom I am a fan of. And in that respect I am not disappointed, only a bit confused bec...more

Won this via First Reads.
The Democrat Governor of New Mexico, Arcadia Alvarado, who is also running for President of the United States, has a very trippy experience while driving home from a party. Did she and her ex-husband, who was also in the car, get abducted by aliens? Or maybe it was all in their head, all a dream? Or perhaps the truth is somewhere in between the two ideas?
Then there's also a former Harvard professor who has two miniature people, a man and a woman who are very naked and hu...more

A divorced, latina running for president? Definitely science fiction. Seriously, this volume, which collects the first six issues of Saucer Country, sets up an interesting situation. Did Arcadia Alvarado really get abducted by bug-eyed grey aliens who anally probed her? I trust that popular writer Paul Cornell has something a bit more clever in mind than these overused tropes; there are certainly hints that there is more than meets the eye. Unfortunately, as with many serialized comic books, the...more

The female, Hispanic Governor of New Mexico runs for President - and you could consider that plot enough, what with the awkward ex-husband and the Tea Party types determined to bring her down - but on top of that, she's had an alien abduction experience. Except it's already been strongly implied that they're not anything so simple as little grey men from another planet - I suspect we're headed into Grant Morrison territory here, with aliens as a visitation from the cosmic overmind. Cornell seems...more
You think you know where this is going, but you really don't. At least I didn't. New Mexico governor Arcadia Alvarado is early into her presidential campaign when she begins to suspect she was recently abducted by aliens. Alvarado is convinced that she must become President in order to help prevent an alien invasion.
Sounds pretty silly, right? And it definitely sounds like something you've seen before. But it isn't. I'm going to have to re-read this one soon because it so completely goes where I...more

I really wanted to like this because I'm a fan of Paul Cornell and I thought the political campaign/alien invasion story sounded intriguing. So far, though, it's not winning me over. After reading the first two issues, I let them stack up for months before getting around to the rest of the story arc, and after reading it, I still find the story slow-paced and confusing and the art ... not to my taste. The main characters are promising - hopefully the next storyline will give them more to do.
http://nwhyte.livejournal.com/2085325.html[return][return]Paul Cornell takes us to New Mexico, where the governor has just announced her candidacy for President, and at the same time she and her husband are mixed up in a peculiar incident of apparent alien abduction. It isn't utterly dissimilar to his London Falling, which also has establishment figures from unusual backgrounds (his varied police squad) having to deal with the unexpectedly sfnal in their work.[return][return]Cornell deconstructs...more
I have enjoyed a recent Vertigo titles like Scalped and Unwritten, but that last essence of something has been missing. That missing piece is UFOs, but my friend always says 'all you need for good story is Ninjas, explosions and boobs', not those things yet, but you never know. Story revolves around a governor who announces her candidacy for a president of the USA, but has encounter with aliens or something weirder. There is couple groups with hidden agendas, one want's to expose the government...more
Kaiken kaikkiaan oikein hupaisaa luettavaa.
Pretty interesting premise, but then, I was sold on premise before I even picked it up. In case you don't already know, the premise is... Arcadia Alvarado, a divorced Latin woman and governor of New Mexico is deciding to run for president, and oh ya, something about aliens, actual dun-dun-dun flying saucer aliens...
In any case, the first issue wasn't mind-blowing, probably mostly because the narrative is broken up a bit between what looks like a couple of different storylines, each with its own...more

Paul Cornell went too clever by half here with Saucer Country, whose premise sounds like the most promising new title Vertigo has to offer. However, Cornell's execution leaves everything to be desired and what we are left with after having been grabbed by the synopsis is little more than wacky antics and hallucinatory diatribes.

As a resident of New Mexico, I was attracted to this title since it contained some elements of reality concerning our state. We do have a Hispanic female governor, although she is a Republican, not a Democrat, and of course, the Roswell incident and alien encounters are a major part of local folklore.
Unfortunately, this is one of those volumes that seems to be all set up for much more complex plotting to come. We are introduced to some intriguing characters, and some interesting concepts, and w...more

Hm. Still liking it enough but I feel like so far it's all peas and potatoes. Seems like the meat is gonna take a few more issues. I still don't care about any of the characters and the plot is a bit watery; that is, the story doesn't really stay with you.
Merged review:
I'm still sort of "meh" on this one. It seemed so promising so I'm clinging to that, and there is certainly still some room for some interesting things to happen -- I mean, for crissakes, we're talking aliens showing up in odd pla...more

Alien-abduction comic crashes and burns.
In honour of the spookiest month of the year and the upcoming US presidential election, I thought I’d take a look at Saucer Country. Written by Paul Cornell, the book is about Arcadia Alvarado, a divorced Hispanic women running for president of the United States. Only days before she plans to announce her intentions to run, she and her ex-husband are abducted by aliens.
