This seems to be the year I turn to movie novelizations for reading material, as Greg Cox's adaptation of The Dark Knight Rises marks the third novel of this ilk that I've read this year. The best novelizations in my view deliver the action of the film in printed form, while taking any opportunities to expand the storyline or deepen characterizations in a meaningful way. As such, this book falls somewhere in between -- better than most, but not as good as it could've been.

The Dark Knight Rises novelization was really good. I would recommend it because it is a great tale of redemption and bravery - how a man who was on top of the world falls to the bottom and rises up from the ashes. This book is best suited for Batman fans, but is still a great tale on its own. The title fits as well as a key fits in its lock - there is perhaps no other that would be better.

Greg Cox's novelized version delves deeper into the final instalment of The Dark Knight Trilogy.

If you simply expect the screenplay to be transformed into prose, then you'll be happy to know that Cox has done this admirably well.

Added descriptions and character thoughts give further dimensions to the story, especially to the explosive, chaotic scenes and the Joker's whereabouts and past havocs.

The writing, however, can be a bit juvenile, cringe-inducing at times and not all dialogue and scenes...more

Rating: 3.5

I don't even know how to "rate" this book. I'll just go for middle ground.

Movie novelisations are usually pretty boring; I mainly got this book because I knew it would be more like a "companion" to the film, as there were a lot of unanswered questions that The Dark Knight Rises left gaping open. (And yes, it can act as a translator for Bane's speech, though to be fair, his sound had been considerably altered in post-production, so he was mostly decipherable)

So I watched The Dark Knight Rises in theatres and was blown away. After dissapointments with The Amazing Spiderman and Prometheus it felt good to watch a good film since The Avengers. Whilst strolling through Wall-Mart with Dark Knight fever I stumbled upon the novelization and immediately bought it. And I must say this was worth my money.

Even if you have seen the movie already I would recommened that you read the book. Basically the book is exactly like the movie but in page format. Though as...more

Oh! So that was what Bane said! Now that I know what he and the other characters were saying, I think I get it. Maybe I'll go see the film again and take this book along with me so that I can read along when the muffling mask and the annoyingly loud soundtrack and special effects playing while main plot points are being said won't detract from my enjoying the movie this time! (gasp, sigh)

The Dark Knight Rises actually is a very good script and ending to a fine trilogy of movies. This novelizatio...more

A quote in this book that caught my attention is "your not batman anymore". Alfred says this to Bruce when they are deciding if he should come out of hiding to stop this new masked named Bane. This Bane is terrorizing the city and no one is doing anything about it. The police have tried to stop his acts of terrorism yet they cant do it without the dark knight. That quote stood out to me because I felt the emotion of Alfred caing for Bruce. Alfred feels that Bruce wants to be defeated so that he...more

“An epic story, some amazing set-pieces and moves at a spectacularly fast pace, the novel may not be as good as the film but it’s something that shouldn’t be overlooked.” ~The Founding Fields

The novelization of The Dark Knight Rises is the first movie tie-in that I brought since the novelization for the third Pirates of the Caribbean Movie, and to be honest, I don’t even know why I brought that. I didn’t even like the film, and the version...more

W.O.W!

I enjoyed it to the core.

I am not saying the book is better than the movie. That is just impossible.

But, if anyone wants to relive the TDKR magic or if anyone wants more finer details of the movie or if anyone wants to read and savor all the dialogues or even if anyone just wants to read a good, action-packed book, they should definitely give this book a try!

Advantages of reading the official novelization:

1. You get to stretch the movie length from 165 mins to 300 mins.

2. You get to hear t...more

The book was well written, (albeit at a teenage level)and the story was scene for scene the movie. So whatever problems I or anyone has with the movie they exist exactly the same in the book. It also offers some insight into what the characters are thinking which at times plays out like a cheesy private detective novel: 'Is this review too harsh,' Nick thought to himself as he read the words back, 'never mind that,' he concluded, 'there is no room for mercy in this cold world.'

If you loved The Dark Knight Rises (or Nolan's trilogy as a whole) you will enjoy this book. It goes line for line and scene for scene from the film (hence, novelization) but with momentary glimpses into the characters emotions and overall tidbits that might have otherwise been missed. The writing wasn't anything spectacular; with minor typos (Blake's name is misspelled as Black at one point) and the occasional missing preposition (the, to) etc. it could have been more refined (hello Mr editor!)...more

I have no idea at all where to begin with this book. It was good and that is saying something since novelizations always suck. For once I was able to read a novelization in which I actually knew what was going on. Yes Cox did take a lot of the dialogue from the movie but still it was fantastic. Considering the hardcore music in the background of the movie and how they were practically whispering, it was nice to read the book and be like oh, so that is what they were saying, or wow she just verba...more

Jul 28, 2012 Alan rated it 4 of 5 stars  ·  review of another edition Recommends it for: Batman fans, The Dark Knight Rises fans
I'm rating this a 4 out of 5 as it does a good job of capturing the plot lines of the film and clarified a few points for me that I missed while watching it. A few times there was the sense that perhaps the novelization was based on a early script rather than the finished film as some touches were missing. I'm not talking about anything major, I mean little things like the scene with the orphan boy drawing bat symbols with chalk that was in the trailer and in the final film but is not mentioned...more

The Dark Knight Rises official novelization picks up eight years later, after the death of Harvey Dent and the arrest of The Joker. Batman has not been seen for the last eight years, and Bruce Wayne has been in hiding. But a mysterious, yet sexy, cat burglar arrives into Bruce's life as well as Batman's, as well as a deadly new threat by the name of Bane. Bruce has no choice but to put on the mask one last time and save Gotham once more.

I loved the book. I've always been a fan of Batman ever sin...more

This book was a bit of an impulse buy for me, I loved the movie, and I was very excited to read this book. It did not disappoint, Bruce, Blake, Selina, Alfred, Commissioner Gordon are amazing characters! You really get a more in depth look at the characters like, Alfred, Blake and Jim Gordon...then you do in the movie. If I pegged the movie and book head to head...I would have to say that the book came out on top, there may have been ALOT more detail and action in the movie, but the detail of t...more

A tightly-written, faithful adaptation that retains the grand/blockbuster pace of the film well. Those looking for 'deleted scenes' will be disappointed. The only real additions are Cox's takes on the characters' thoughts between their spoken lines, although it appears that most people's inner monologues are staggeringly dull and literal ("Whoa...did he just say what I think he said?" is one such groaner from the opening chapter). Ultimately, this delivers exactly what it promises: a good read f...more

I was wondering whether I should give this book four or five star rating, but I decided to be generous. There are several reasons for that. First, I love the epic story of Christopher Nolan, Jonathan Nolan and David S. Goyer - Rises is by far my favorite Batman movie. Second, the book was a gripping read and it was hard for me to put it down, which is always a bonus. And third - while the novelization of Greg Cox is not as impressive as what Matthew Stover did with the "Revenge of the Sith" it i...more

I loved this book as much as I loved the movie. Of course I saw the movie before I read the book because I think the book came out after the movie. Christopher Nolan wanting to be all secretive and what not. This book was so close to the movie I felt like I was watching the movie the whole time I was reading. The author did a wonderful job of getting the reader inside the character's head and did a wonderful job getting around to every detail that happened in the movie. Great book! Highly recomm...more

Amazing.

That's the only word I can think of to describe this book. I was so into it that as soon as I started it I could barely put it dowm for more than a moment and finished it in a day.

I still haven't seen the movie in theaters and this only fueled my desire to do so. As I was reading it I was just imagining what could be happening on screen.

This was wonderful and I think any fan of The Dark Knight would love this novelization.

I don't believe I have ever done that before - read a novelization of a movie I had just seen. However, I am a huge Batman/Dark Knight/Christian Bale fan and didn't care for this 3rd movie mostly because I couldn't understand Bane and also because it really is such a dark movie.
At any rate, I read the book on a flight from CA to MPLS and it was a decent read and I think I can watch the movie more appreciatively the second time around.

I really liked reading this. I was very similar to the movie with only slight deviations. One of the things I really appreciated was the inclusion of the Joker. While he didn't actually appear he was referenced quite a lot, not overly so, but just enough to properly connect this story to The Dark Knight. It was something I felt was missing in the movie, so it was good to see it here. Nothing new or groundbreaking, but a fun quick read nonetheless.

It was a good retelling of the movie in some ways, but when the author attempted to narrate the thoughts of the characters, I cringed. The thoughts were often as cheesy as the 1960's Batman TV show. It was full of horrible puns and awful clinches.

Also, a few other lines in the book took away from its brilliance. For example, near the beginning the author used the follow sentence: "other sounds began to be heard." This horrible sentence stuck with me for the rest of the book.

Yuck.

I loved this book it was totally epic.I wish their can be another Bat Man series just as good as this one in the near future.I love Greg Cox's writing even though I just read one of his books which is this one.
THIS IS A MUST READ!!!!ESPECIALLY IF YOUR A SUPER HERO FAN!!!!!

Wow, what great book. I now know what Bane was saying & all the characters actions make sense. This is a great read, if you have seen Dark Knight Rising and enjoyed it but didn't love it -read this book. It explains everything!

I am going to go see the move again basd purely on how great the book was.
Daniel
This book is almost an exact copy of The Dark Knight Rises movie. The book explains a lot of things that movie didn't fully explain. For example who certain characters were, or the whereabouts of The Joker. There isn't much more to say about this book. If you loved the movie, then you'll enjoy reading the book.
Clifford Quattlander
Straight-forward translation of the movie into a paperback book. I thought some of the scenes could have been written a bit better, but that's just me. All things considered, not a bad book.

When I watched the film, I remember how instantly gripped I was by the notion of the so called "Clean Slate," which was Selina Kyle's main motive. This particular contrivance would allow her to erase herself from any database and thus making her cease to exist. That was enough for Nolan's Catwoman to climb all the way up to my favourites! And I'm not so sure myself, whether I'm reviewing the novelizaion or the film.
Ed
Finally! A movie novelization that sticks to its source material! I have grown tired of novelizations that try to add so much original material that you begin to wonder if it's even based on the movie. Then, with these novelizations, it seems the authors get so engrossed in adding their own material that they get caught by a deadline and have to rush the climax of the story. (For ex: The Dark Knight, by Dennis O'Neil.) The Dark Knight Rises adaptation by Greg Cox is a welcomed exception. This no...more

I read this this summer because I have kids and couldn't get out to see the movie. It was satisfying in the way that one is satisfied by eating a hot dog when they wanted a steak.
Ruth
There's a couple of great tidbits of information that were not in the movie. A few scenes are written differently than they were filmed. It's a perfectly reasonable use of $6.
