Night’s chill tickled her skin. Lonnie pressed her hands together and glanced up. He was even more handsome up close. Having grown up the shy, awkward daughter of Joel Sawyer, she’d hardly spoken to any boy, let alone the one who had mothers whispering warnings in their daughter’s ears and fathers loading shotguns.

Pretty Lonnie Sawyer is shy and innocent, used to fading in

It’s a mountain romance with a very interesting twist…because technically the reader isn’t inclined to like the hero.

How do you enjoy reading a romance where the hero is completely unlikeable? Surprisingly enough, that is exactly what I did: greatly enjoyed this novel. It’s an unconventional romance, but one the reader is aware of when they start the book. Honesty with the reader is so key in a novel where the norm is far from the expected and it kept me from becoming overly frustrated with t

Setting: Think Catherine Marshall's "Christy". I mean, it's not really the same, but that feeling of the backwoods life in the Appalachian mountains is there. The culture, the suspicions, the bootlegging, the abuse, the hardness, and the bitterness caused from a hard life ... it's ALL THERE!
Romance: There are no butterflies in this book. In fact, Joanne masterfully makes you really not like the hero while at the same time, you hope for his redemption.. He's actually a jerk. A likeable jerk. I do
Have you ever read a book that was just so good that you hesitate to start another, because you know that the next has a high bar to meet? Well, that's how I feel after reading Joanne Bischof's Be Still My Soul.

Lonnie Sawyer is a quiet girl, raised in the mountains. When her father sees her with Gideon O'Riley he forces them to marry, though that is that last thing that either of them wants. Gideon resents Lonnie for putting him in this tough spot. Can God mend the seams of a relationship broken
I have had my eye on this book (and the series) for a long time. So when I won the series in the giveaway, I was super excited!

I believe this is one of the strongest debut novels I have ever read! Bischof has a beautiful writing style. It’s simple but poetic, and I love that! I believe it fits the feel of the story perfectly.

I really liked Lonnie’s character a lot. She had a sweet and innocent way about her. When Gideon didn’t treat her right, she still kept that innocent spirit. Lonnie was prob

Gideon walks Lonnie home one night and steals a kiss. When her father sees it and believes the worst, Gideon and Lonnie are forced into a marriage neither of them want. Set in the Blue Ridge Mountains, “Be Still My Soul” is a story about learning to live with shattered dreams and costly mistakes, and finding the strength to forgive, love and hope again.

Gideon was more villain than hero throughout most of the book, and I confess, I was tempted to put it down. I didn’t see how Bischof could possib
What an amazing story of forgiveness and love! Lonnie and Gideon find themselves trapped in a loveless, shotgun wedding. After living a life of abuse under her father's hand, sweet Lonnie hopes that Gideon will someday be able to love her. However, Gideon resents being bound to Lonnie and his anger grows and grows. This story has everything. There are highs and lows inside a marriage that binds two people together. There is hurt, anger, grief and despair. And finally, there is forgiveness, hope ...more

I've followed the buzz about Joanne Bischof's debut novel and was also intrigued by the plot. Once I picked it up, her writing pulled me into the story and I finished Be Still My Soul in two days. I appreciated Bischof's fresh word pictures and how they fit with the setting of her novel, while revealing the personalities of her characters. I'm looking forward to reading more of her books!

If you love a story with a mountain setting, romantic tension, and wonderful characterization, Be Still My Soul is a satisfying read! Gideon's and Lonnie's tale is one full of challenges and suffering - from costly mistakes, to arduous traveling, to the pain of giving second chances, as well as the humility required to accept them. But the end result of it all is full of hope.

While the Appalachian-mountains setting is enough to attract me (personally) to this book, the quality that sets it apart

{ What I Loved }

I'd been looking forward to this book for months. Then it came at last in the middle of last month, right around mid-terms. It was a major bummer having to lay aside Lonnie's story in order to study. =)

This was such a beautiful book.

The story intrigued me from the beginning because it was unique yet held lilting reminders of a style like Janette Oke's Love Comes Softly series and Catherine Marshall's Christy.

And there's nothing quite like a novel set in the Appalachian mountain

Ohhh, where to start? I loved this it in a day!

First, Gideon. I will be honest and say I had trouble liking the guy at the start of the book. But I think most readers would say the same. Thing is, even in his unlikeable state, something about Joanne Bischof's hero tugs at the reader's heart...and as you get further and further into the story, you find yourself cheering for the man, certain that he can change and live up to the man he's meant to be. I love his journey.

I thought that this would be good. I didn't think it would be so incredibly awesome. I love Lonnie's character. She is so sweet, faithful, honest, and able to truly see good in her husband, Gideon. Her father on the other hand I disliked from page one. He is so cruel to Lonnie.
I grew to really like Gideon as a character. He grew so much from the first scene between him and Lonnie, to the last page. I also can't stand Bert. Once you read this book, I think you will agree with me.

A moving debut! More than just a love story, Be Still My Soul takes compelling characters on a journey of redemption in the dangerous beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Joanne Bischof’s masterful and compassionate insight into human nature won me over. On the surface, Gideon might be one of the most unlikeable heroes ever, but Joanne made me care about him and want him to find his way. That takes talent, and Joanne has it. I can’t wait for the second book in the Cadence of Grace series!
Wow! This was a first novel for the author, Joanne Bischof. Lonnie and Gideon, at the young ages of 17 and 22, start their married life with many obstacles. The reader should be prepared for poignant scenes where each character struggles mightily to figure out the reasons for their God-given paths. I found myself angry with Gideon but later giving him credit for learning how to handle being a new man. Give this book a try - you will react to it and remember it.

This Appalachian tale rang true, and I live in the Appalachians! Though Gideon isn't your typical hero, we're rooting for him as he learns how to treat his brand-new wife, Lonnie. Looking forward to getting to know these winsome characters more in Bischof's next book!

WOW! All I can say is WOW! This book is excellent. To see more of my review, please visit my blog:

Be Still My Soul is a very poignant story of grace and forgiveness. The setting is the back country of the Appalachian Hills where a man's home is his castle, his family his possessions and his word is law As I read this I felt with Lonnie, the shy girl who would rather stand in the shadows than to make a spectacle of herself by singing for the crowd. Be Still My Soul by Joanne Bischof is her first novel, a wonderful Christian historical fiction romance set in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Lonnie (17) and Gil (21) are forced to marry even though they barely knew each other. In the beginning of the book, I felt bad for Lonnie and then about midway through, I started feeling bad for Gil. They went through some tough times but Lonnie kept holding on to her faith that God was looking out for her. This was a tear jerker for me, as they encountered hea ...more

I was born and raised, and still reside, in the beautiful mountains of Virginia. This is a timeless place--as much as things change, they remain the same. The constancy of the mountains is comforting and immovable. Author Joanne Bischof offers a look at life in rural Appalachia in "Be Still My Soul". Lonnie Sawyer and her mother and siblings live under the rule of Lonnie's abusive alcoholic father. Lonnie's refuge is her Aunt Sarah, who offers brief respites from family troubles with readings fr ...more

My thoughts about Be Still My Soul:
I was very excited to read this book as it is an Appalachian Christian romance and I live in Virginia and my husband and I have been camping in Rocky Knob where the story takes place. It was very interesting to read about the Appalachian culture of yesteryear. I was quite fascinated with the music, the clothing, the food and trade for products needed, the moonshiners even, and the family dynamics. I would say that, honestly, in the Appalachian mountains of Virg

Super sweet, christian read! I fell for both characters - both Lonnie and Gideon and how they were thrust together so unfairly. God truly has a divine plan for each of us, even if we don't know it at the time.

Be Still My Soul (Cadence of Grace book #1) is a heart-warming, enriching christian novel that entwines the sweet ‘falling in love’ with a faith based foundation. The story opens with the simple encounter between Lonnie and Gideon and a musical event they both attend in the Blue Ridge Moun
"Be Still My Soul" by Joanne Bischof is a 5 star book. I was given book two of this series for a review but wanted to read book one first and I am so glad that I did.

This is the first book of The Cadence Of Grace Series and if the other two books in this series is as fantastic as this, her first book that she has written, she will be a favorite author to many historical fiction fans.

Be Still my Soul by Joanne Bischof is a wonderful story. I loved this book. It was light reading and a great story about how God can bring us through stuff even when we aren’t sure why he led us to it. The story is set in the Appalachian Mountains which holds a special place in my heart anyway. I love the Appalachian Mountains and think they are one of God’s greatest creations. I won this book in a giveaway and was excited to start reading it right away, loving the idea that it was set in a time and place that I'm sure I would enjoy living in.

I would like to start off by saying that I am not a very religious person, so I don't think it would be fair for me to touch on that aspect of the book.

At first things were very interesting and I couldn't put the book down. But then things slowed down, and I found myself not wanting to pick the book up. I would read only a chapte

I read through this book in two days. Author Joanne Bischof did an amazing job of bring the characters to life and making me feel each and every heartbreak, joy, sorrow, and hope. I found myself so upset with what was going on in the story that I had to read through the next chapter and the next chapter because I couldn't stand not knowing whats going to come of it all.

The first chapter is filled with vivid descriptions and lost of similes and metaphors. I found this a bit distracting personall

Be Still My Soul is Joanne Bischof’s debut novel. You’d never know it by reading this story! From page one, I was hooked and couldn’t put this book down until I finished it.
