Iced was my #1 most anticipated release of 2012, and while it wasn't the biggest disappointment of the year, it comes close.

This is not really a review but more of a reaction. Let me be clear, I love how Karen Marie Moning (from here on out referred to as KMM because Karen Marie Moning is simply too long to keep writing) writes. I enjoy the way she crafts characters and the world she builds. KMM is able to write characters that even when I don't like them, I want to keep reading. And that happened with Iced. I wasn't invested in the story, I was mildly bored by the storyline but I still felt compelled to keep going....more This is not really a review but more of a reaction. I enjoy the way she crafts characters and the world she builds. KMM is able to write characters that even when I don't like them, I want to keep reading. And that happened with Iced. I wasn't invested in the story, I was mildly bored by the storyline but I still felt compelled to keep going. There is just something about the way she writes her stories.

There is absolutely no way that it is ever acceptable for a 14 year old girl to turn into a romantic or sexual object. Sexualization of girls is rampant in our culture and the girls themselves feel the pressure to rise up and meet this standard. I have a 13 year old, she plays on a soccer team with 13, 14 and 15 year olds. I have gotten the pleasure of hanging out with the team, watching my husband coach them and listening to their conversations. Let me make this clear, a 14 year old is still a child. As I read this novel, I kept remembering my daughter and her soccer teammates -- their silly conversations, their reactions to situations and my understanding that they are still children.

There is no question that Dani is still a child. I have read the arguments against the idea that Dani is a child by saying that she survives, she kills to survive and well I strongly disagree. Many children all over the world have had to do horrible things just to survive, this doesn't mean that because they can survive they should then be sexually harassed and the object of sexualization by much older men with enormous power. And as if the situation wasn't bad enough, I believe Dani is emotionally immature for her age. KMM writes Dani as if she is emotionally younger than 14. Dani refers to herself in the third person. She considers herself a superhero. She has immature aspirations for herself. She is unable to handle consequences and face up to her actions (e.g. her running all over Dublin to avoid Mac). And a further example that Dani is absolutely not ready to be the object of two older men's sexual attention is that .... she doesn't want their sexual attention. As the story is written, Dani is repeatedly uncomfortable with either Christian's or Ryo's advances. Dani is uncomfortable with the idea of sex in real life and very uncomfortable with any nuanced sexual comment. I keep wondering, hoping and praying that what is happening here is that we are supposed to be disgusted with Ryo and Christian. That Dani is reacting negatively to them and following her instincts because the storyline is NOT going toward a perverted older man who gets off on children. Please let it be like that.

And what happened to Christian? :( I have an extreme soft-spot for the MacKeltars. Christian was always my favorite in the Fever series (yes I liked him even more than Barrons, not necessarily for Mac, but just as a male character). I know that KMM has the right as the author to do what she wants with any of her characters, but I just don't buy into what is happening to Christian. I don't accept that the MacKeltars wouldn't be tracking him down. And what is really eating at me about the entire Christian storyline is that it is so similar to what happened to Dageaus in the Dark Highlander except that it was better done in the Dark Highlander.

One more thing, I don't accept that Ryo is stronger and perhaps more clever than Barrons. So anyway, there is my take on Iced and I doubt if I will read the next one in the series.

I'll give you the take-home before I write this review, because I might get bored and wander off: Dani O'Malley is the Scrappy Doo of the Feververse. Which makes her the Dawn Summers, Jar Jar Binks, or Wesley Crusher of this franchise, if you lack familiarity with the buzzkill that is Scrappy Doo.

I was afraid I wouldn't like Dani because her voice in the previous books was just short of annoying. I loved her. It didn't take long for her to grow on me.

While I knew I should have never gotten so excited about a book before reading it I just coudn't help doing exactly that. I adored the fever series so much that the possibility of getting anything else from that world had me going crazy. Probably the main reason for my disappointement.

Really enjoyed it, KMM never fails to entertain me. What an imagination! Dani was a riot too, I loved her despite her only being 14 y/o. Dani at 14: A girl or a woman?

Something is randomly icing areas around Dublin (and further out), and there doesn't appear to be anyway to track its next move. It is leaving many dead - humans and Fae alike. So Ryoden solicits (blackmails?!) Dani to help investigate, and soon others join in too.

We meet Dancer, Dani's new 17 y/o guy friend, a human with a brilliant scientific mind. Christian is back, and he's only focused on Dani. He must protect her, but from what? He is turning dark Fae, but still has some human in him. Kat is now in charge at the abby, but having Cruse imprisoned in the catacombs below proves to be her greatest challenge. Jo (from the abby) finds herself employed at Chesters, Ryoden's club, and becomes a big part of the investigation as well.

The story takes time weaving all the plot lines together, which at first appear random and separate. Dani visits Fae, Christian struggles with turning Fae, Ryonden obsesses over Dani's safety, the abby struggles with an IFP (inter-dimensional fairy pothole?), Dancer mysteriously comes and goes, Jo forms a surprising crush, a new club of crusaders offer peace and protection, and of course more horrible Fae monsters are new to Dublin. The ending pulls everything together for a final spectacular showdown.

Unlike the Fever series, this one does not end with a major cliffhanger. There are a few teasers to wet your appetite for the next book (and I can't wait!), but the main story here is wrapped up. There are some story lines that will certainly continue as well. We see very little Mac and Barrons in this one.

At this point, I have NO CLUE who will be Dani's hero. I assume Ryoden, but... maybe not. ICED is told from three POVs: Dani, Kat and Christian. Dani gets the vast majority of it, but we learn quite a bit more through Kat and Christians own stories.

I absolutely enjoyed this one, and thought Dani was a great character to base the next few books around. But there were some strong niggles. The several suggestive sexual innuendos towards Dani by Ryadon and Christian felt completely inappropriate, and it was probably my biggest sticking point from giving this one a 5-star rating. (They were mild, I guess, but still made me cringe a time or two. I get that the gray lady gave her some shine and curves, but she is still just a 14 y/o girl!) SPOILER: (view spoiler)

Despite my few niggles, I really enjoyed this one! I can't wait to see what is next, but I do hope Dani ages quickly in the next. This story worked great as UF, but there is no romance element as of yet since Dani is still only 14. (less)

Now, I am not going to pretend that I didn't know Moning wasn't exactly a PC writer when it comes to treatment of women - Mac had her share of atrocious, abusive things done to her by a slew of men, including her life mate, in the Fever books, but at least she was a grown-up and could fight back physically, sexually and emotionally. Dani is a child! I seriously question Moning's judgment here. She is definitely no Nabokov to take on a subject so controversial and make something good out of it. She should have stuck to what she knows best and let us, her fans, enjoy a book that is entertaining and fun rather than the one that unnecessarily and thoughtlessly pushes boundaries and makes us gag in the meantime.

What makes me the most annoyed is that the way Iced is plotted, there isn't actually a reason for Dani to be so young and for the story not to take place 5 or even 10 years in future. As the novel opens, post-wall-crash Dublin is in an even more dire situation than at the end of Shadowfever. Not only is our world infested by fae, but something weird is freezing and icing the whole areas of Dublin and beyond. It seems, Ryodan learns first about the ice problem and then decides to recruit Dani to help him investigate it, and does so by quite literally torturing and blackmailing her. (Don't ask me why a millenia-old man with a gang of friends, equally old, smart and experienced in many things fae and human, even needs a help from a teenager. I still don't get it.) So, having no choice, Dani starts investigating, with assistance from her friend Dancer, a 17-year old science geek and the only non-creepy male in the whole story. Lurking about is pedo fairy Christian, who suddenly and unexpectedly acquires a very unhealthy sexual obsession with Dani.

I personally wasn't that impressed with the first half of Iced. First, there is too much recapping of the Fever story and mythology and second, naturally, too much uncomfortable sexualization of Dani, done mostly by the mega-creep Christian. As far as the mystery of Iced goes, I'd say it's of an average quality for urban fantasy. The new bits of mythology are interesting, but the plot is not as elaborate and twisty as that in the Fever series.

However, the second part is a tad livelier and less offensive (or maybe I just got used to the grossness of it all by then?). That's where the investigation really gets going, we learn more about Dani's past, we see how Cruce is plotting his escape and how Christian's transformation into an Unseelie Prince is progressing, and, most importantly, Christian's sick POV is scaled back. In this second part he is presented in a sort of humorous way, because once we no longer have to be in his head filled with thoughts of sex and odes to his hard member so much, from Dani's POV he is just a pathetic and often laughable psycho.

With that said, I honestly don't know if I can actively recommend Iced. While reading it, I spent too much time trying to imagine Dani was older, so that I didn't have to feel so revolted all the time. But then, judging by the multitude of 5-star reviews of this book, there is a HUGE portion of women who have absolutely no problem with the blatant pedophilia in this book. It's astonishing, really, just how many don't really think anything of it at all, "as long as Dani doesn't actually have sex with anyone." Oh well...

I will probably read the sequel. (less)

Karen Marie Moning has done this to me before. In Darkfever, she introduces us to Mac, the biggest Barbie doll I've ever seen. She's obtuse. She's unpleasant to be around. She's impossible to identify with: why is everything pink? And she has terrible, terrible taste in music. It's been months since I read ICED ...... now I can finally say I'm disappointed about some aspects of the book. If I ignore the fact that Dani is 14 years old .... then the book deserves 4 stars. I can't ignore the crazy Christian and alpha Ryo lusting for Dani... so the book deserves 2 stars. BUT I'm a huge fan of KMM and I liked the character Dancer, so ..... I'm giving it 3 stars.

Will I read the next one??? YES .... I need to see how KMM is going to solve this age-romance issues.

First of all, I would like to say that KMM is one of my favorite author. I LOVE both her Highlander and Fever series, and was really anxious to read Iced, but unfortunately as far as I'm concerned, with Iced she did NOT deliver.

She’s definitely no Mac whose own story starts with the girl all cute and funny and bumbling about; Dani is the opposite in knowing her place in things. The girl sees things a certain way and because of this sometimes fails to see other possibilities. But add that odd aspect of her that stuck more than once: some sort of innocence that drew others to her. I liked this and disliked this because each time she spoke, her age showed. 14?! And it got ergh... weird (?) how she'd see, all Mega and superhero head strong; and have that opposed to how others saw her. And it’s not even that she’s unaware, but more like she’s not concerned.

Except it’s also on account of the girl’s lack of concern over what others have think of her and what should be done, that’s she says some of the most hilarious things. She’s a funny kid… except she’s a girl surrounded by not so funny others. I sort of liked that opposition, too~ her all good (but bad ass at the same time), then the rest of them not good at all. Because the fact is they each know what they are and didn’t bother with pretense. It’s the last that allowed for some refreshingly upfront moments... but also plenty of the very uncomfortable ones.

All that said, I liked this but didn't love it. First, I doubt there’s any book out there that could beat the feelings that Books four and five in Fever brought out in me. Second, I was hoping for some old people to pop back in *Barrons* Now, the question is does Ryodan match up?

“I can’t decide if what he just let me see was real – or another of his games. They don’t call him master of manipulation for nothing. Barron breaks heads. Ryodan turns them inside out. Barrons fucks you up. Ryodan makes you fuck yourself up. He pushes buttons and rearranges things according to his own private, coolly sociopathic plan.”

Reading that, one would think Ryodan is indeed all that (and wish it true, too) except really there’s too little to support it. I mean Ryodan’s scary and mysterious, and a lot like with Mac with Barrons, Dani (and thus we) knew next to nothing about the guy! In fact, it’s that not-knowing pushed me on, but the guy doesn’t have that much face time proving what a big bad baddy he could be. Mostly he showed what a douche he was.

There were also other areas all ready covered. Take the whole Vlane-Mac-Barrons thing that felt redone but upped with Christian-Dani-Rodyan, and you’d almost feel disappointed at having to go over the same material again, and I almost did… except it’s all simply exceptionally done. Old hat love triangle with same characters different name, is truth… but gosh darn it: I was entertained!

And have I mentioned the funny? This got hilarious at points.

“You could ask me to teach you.”

“Huh?” This night is getting weird in a hurry. “Teach me like you’re teaching a class or something? What are you going to call it: ‘You To Can Be a Sociopath 101?”

“It would be more like a graduate – level class.”

Why oh why is she soo fecking young and soo fecking dumb sometimes?

I know what KMM is doing, she wants us to have like 1000 questions and like 0 answers, so we would want to read the next and the next book.

But I was frustrated... If she doesn't get "the look" someone "gave" her. How can we??? We read this from her POV, so she either need to grow up and be an adult, which she hates so viciously...more

After finding out Iced centered on Dani, Mac’s fourteen-year old sidhe-seer friend, I did not plan on reading it. I changed my mind after Jenny @ Supernatural Snark ~~forced~~ convinced me to pick it up, and I was instantly hooked. I'm shocked at how much I ended up loving this story. I mean, come on, it's an adult story centered on a fourteen year old! Color me surprised.

I don’t even know where to start with this one. I went into this book liking Dani, intrigued by Ryodan and curious as to what Karen Marie Moning could do to continue this Fever world that’s so engaging. She ended up blowing me away and I couldn’t put it down. I wasn’t expecting to laugh so much, the world is still so interesting but the big star and heart of Iced is Dani. I went from like to love with this fourteen year old heroine and she is fan-fecking-tastic. (I had to get one feck in here, that’s all, promise!)

Iced picks up right where Mac’s books left off. Dublin is in ruins, the walls are down, meaning Fae are crossing over and it’s every man, woman and child for themselves. But never fear, Dani “Mega” O’Malley is here and she’s fighting the fight for her people and her city. This girl’s attitude is what kept drawing me to her time and time again. She’s living large, living big and finds excitement in every situation. She’s had a rough life, her childhood wasn’t filled with love from her mom, but she doesn’t let it get her down. She’s the Mega and she wants to use her sidhe-seer powers for good. It’s hard not to smile at and with Dani. She’s had to grow up fast, so in many ways, she does act mature and like an adult, but she has her fourteen year old moments, whether it’s with the things she says, her actions, or even having things the people around her say go right over her head. There is something about this girl that’s so incredibly endearing, even though she’s tough as nails and likes a good fight.

He [Ryodan] stabs a button on his desk. “Lor, get in here.”

Lor blows in like he was plastered to the other side of the door.

“Escort the kid to clean the fuck up and get that stench off her.”

“Sure thing, boss.” He scowls at me.

I scowl right back.

Lor points through the glass floor. “See that blonde down there with the big tits? I was about to get laid.”

“One, I’m too young to hear that kind of stuff, and two, I don’t see you carrying a club to knock her over the head with, so how were you going to accomplish that?”

Behind me, Ryodan laughs.

“You’re ruining my night, kid.”

“Ditto. Ain’t life at Chester’s grand.”

Ryodan finds a way to get Dani under his thumb and bound into a contract to work for him. She hates it but she does it when her friend’s life is put on the line. They’re tracking a monster that’s freezing areas around Dublin causing instant death in its wake. Ryodan and Dani investigate the scenes and clues, trying to figure out who is doing this and what their purpose is. It leads to a showdown at the abbey, Dani’s sometimes home, and as Dani would think of it, a fight between good vs. evil.

“What are you doing?”

“Why do you care?” I got belligerence stuck in my craw and I don’t even know why. Sometimes just standing next to Ryodan makes me feel that way.

“Because if there’s no point in what you’re doing, you’re wasting my time.”

“Dude, got eyes? I’m collecting evidence.”…

“In Ziploc bags.”

“I think they’re Glad.”

“They look impartial to me.”

(…)

Collecting my ziplocks makes perfect sense to me.

“It doesn’t make sense. You could examine the detritus thoroughly right here at the scene.”

“Dude, do I ask you to explain yourself?”

“Kid, are you ever not prickly.”

I root around in the rubble, making sure I got some of everything, keeping my back to him because sometimes looking at him is more than I can stand. “Sure. Like, when I’m not around a prick…”

Dani, even being just fourteen, has a few potential men in her life. Nothing inappropriate happens, but in addition to Ryodan forcing his way into her life, there’s Christian, who’s turning into someone he doesn’t want to be and acts plain crazy. And my favorite new addition, Dancer, Dani’s best friend and super smart teen, who lost his family and managed to survive on his own. There’s something more to Dancer that we don’t know yet, maybe a skeleton in his past or maybe something else. I have no doubt Ryodan already knows everything about Dancer and will let us in on any secrets when he’s good and ready. Then there’s Ryodan – the guy is just a beast on page. He’s in charge. He’s not to be defied or ignored. And he gets what he wants, always. Dani knows right off she’s never going to manage to stay within all the rules Ryodan sets out for her and she doesn’t. But like Ryodan’s employee, Lor, says a few times, she’s keeping things interesting and it’s never a dull moment when Dani’s around.

While the story is told primarily from Dani’s point of view, we also get into Christian’s mind a little (creepy place) and Kat, another sidhe-seer like Dani, who is now trying to run the abbey. The supporting characters added a great balance to Dani and I felt like the flow of story was helped so much by having a few of them chime in with their POV’s. It’s not a lot, but enough to get a feel for what else is going on around Dublin that might not directly impact Dani…yet.

As a fan of the Fever series, the best thing I can say about this book is I was more easily drawn into this story than I was the earlier books for Mac. There’s something about Dani that I just loved. Her attitude is so positive, she’s aware of everything going on around her, she tries to constantly learn new things and has that gut feeling that she’s lives off of in every situation. But, she’s still a kid and that balance, having her fighting alongside the badass Ryodan in one scene and then inhaling pop tarts and getting the lyrics to Purple Haze wrong in another, just made her endearing to me – a term that the Mega would hate, but I simply loved getting to know Dani.

The ending gives us a slight cliffhanger, although nothing like the torturous ones KMM is known for but just enough for me to want to wish the next year away so I had book 2 in my hands right now. This was a purely entertaining read, one of my favorites of the year, and a book that I highly recommend.(less)

Faux-pas, Moning.

The third star joined the other two at the very end, thanks to the action and the slightly improved plot but, if you're expecting anything even remotely reminiscent of the Fever series, drop this book now.

There were some comments made about Dani being in bed with Ryodan and then with Christian, well that is true, but not the entire story. Dani is late for “work”, Ryodan finds her and when she wakes up he is sitting on her bed. Nothing else happens, he gets up makes a comment about her duckie pjs and he leaves the room. In Christian’s case, she has been hurt; he brings her to his house, takes her clothes off down to her bra and panties and heals her. After she wakes up, he stays completely away from her. There are other situations where Dani, meets the Seelie Prince at one point and he starts the usual sexual persuasion attempt and Dani gets down to her shirt, before Ryodan puts a stop to it. But eventually all of the sexual innuendos and situations are eased up. Because the mystery and the awesome Fever world takes over. I really couldn’t put it down from that point.

It is uncomfortable about two grown men lusting after a 14 year old (even though this is just a year and Dani has been through A LOT in her young year) it was still outside my comfort zone, but I think it is more about the woman that they know that she is to become. That is more of who they lust after. Dani is funny and irreverent and lets her mouth get her in trouble. I am glad that Dani has someone like Ryodan in her corner, as good as she is, she is still vulnerable. Is Ryodan a shit to Dani? Yes he is and isn’t ashamed of it. I also wish I had a clearer picture of what Ryodan looks like in my head. I love Dancer and wish this could have been a YA book about him and Dani, they are so cute together with Ryodan having a different love interest. I think he has a lot of surprises in store for us in the future. But this is KMM’s fantastic world and her word is final. Are there uncomfortable moments in the book? Yes. Is it as bad as I feared? No. Will I pick up the next one in the series? Absolutely!!! :-)

3 Less Than Stellar Stars!

I'm truly not feeling inspired to write this. I don't know that I would consider anything I've written to be a spoiler, but, if that concerns you, feel free to skip on to the next review:)

First, I'll say that I don't know what all the fuss was about over Dani being fourteen in this book. Nothing happened between her and Ryodan or her and Christian. Not that it should have, obviously, nor did I expect that it would. I guess everyone has to decide what bothers them, what...more 3 Less Than Stellar Stars!

First, I'll say that I don't know what all the fuss was about over Dani being fourteen in this book. Nothing happened between her and Ryodan or her and Christian. Not that it should have, obviously, nor did I expect that it would. I guess everyone has to decide what bothers them, what crosses a line. Dani and Dancer are adorable together, and I look for the two of them to grow closer.

Dani is cute and ballsy and very, very immature. She thinks she's tough, but she's not tough at all. The girl still believes in superheroes, for goodness sake. She's very sweet under all that brashness. I love her to pieces, much more than I did in the Fever series. She and Dancer turned out to be my favorite things about this book, and the reasons I'm giving it three stars. Dani had some wonderful lines in this story, and, without her, Iced would have been an utter waste of time.

I almost don't recognize Ryo and his men in this book. They are quite different from how they were written in the Fever series. I'm not judging the personality change to be negative, just saying the writing is inconsistent. I thought Ryo would have quite the hold on me by the time I had finished this book. That isn't the case. Strangely, I found his part in this story rather unimaginative.

The story was....I'm sorry, but the story was *lacking*. An ice/fog creature that goes around freezing people and locations?! Really?? That's the best KMM could come up with? The story was slow and pondering and, frankly, boring until the last few chapters. It's funny because, before I read the book myself, so many people told me that the story is classic KMM. I honestly didn't feel that way. I got the sense that KMM, while knowing the character of Dani well, had zero idea what kind of story to give her, and sort of hacked together bits and pieces to come up with an uninspired whole.

That's about all I've got. It disappoints me greatly to write this because the Fever series was, and still is, one of my very favorites. If I do read the next book in this particular series, it won't be until it's been out for a while and the price has dropped considerably.

Just my opinion, and obviously I'm in the minority;)(less)
