Those horses didn't sleep one bit.
They frolicked on the loose.

They joined in games like Hide-n-Seek,
Leapfrog, and Duck, Duck, Goose.

"So this is why you snooze all day. I thougth I told you NO HORSEPLAY!"

When his stubborn horses insist on playing games all night instead of sleeping, one determined farmer wears himself out trying to change their habits.

Horseplay by Karma Wilson illustrated by Jim McMullan follows the attempts by Farmer to keep his horses from playing games all night. McMullan's illustrations were done in watercolor. My favorite images are hid with sheep, cards, and play, play, play.

Those that enjoy silly books will probably like this combination of rhymes and farm silliness. I found the illustrations of the horses annoying because of the buck-toothed horses. They looked donkey-like to me, with ears just a bit too long. While I...more

Silly picture book about a herd of silly ponies that stay up all night goofing off. Poor Farmer is beside himself! He can't figure out why his horses have to sleep the day away. Maybe they are sick? Maybe wolves are keeping them awake all night? Guess again, Farmer!

There is a lot of humor in both the narrative and the illustrations as the horses outsmart the farmer. Cute story.

The duo of Karma Wilson and Jim McMullan that brought us Hogwash are back with another frolic down on the farm. It seems that Farmer needs to find some room in his life for fun. His horses have and they're not going to give it up. Get ready for loads of giggles.

Another cute contribution by Karma Wilson--I don't love it as much as the Bear books or Whopper Cake, but it's enough fun that N. wanted to "play Horseplay" after reading it. Also, M. kept calling it "Playhorse," which is as good a way as any to endear a book to me.

Karma Wilson books are always a sure bet. She has excellent rhyme and sweet stories, the sort people think about when they think of picture books. This one is probably one of my least favorites as it is simply "ok" to me, but I can see picking it up for a story time.

Fun book with rhyming text that keeps the story moving. My favorite part was seeing the different ways the horses played. Preschool storytime might enjoy this, though the horses' expressions will be hard to see in a larger group. Great for a lap-read or read-alone.

Farmer’s horses can never see to stay awake during the day. Farmer discovers the cause, but no matter what he does, he can’t seem to solve the problem. An amusing story, but didn’t quite keep us hooked in the same way as Wilson’s Bear books.

I liked this book and have shared Wilson' Hogwash! and Sakes Alive! A Cattle Drive during several storytimes with preschoolers and developmentally disabled adults.

I'm not as fond of the illustrations in this book but I think that kids will enjoy it none the less.

Funny story about a farmer who doesn't understand why his horses are so tired during the day. He stays up at night to see what is going on. Those horses sure know how to live it up and readers will enjoy it.

I love Karma Wilson, but I don't know where she came up with this story! When the horses started to play poker, she lost me. The story (and ending) seem odd (and old) for the audience age.
Vicki
A cute rhyming farm animal story that has colorful, yet awkward illustrations. To me the horses are not right in some of the pictures-creepyish.
Lori
It's humorous, but I didn't connect with it. I may find I like it better if I read it to a primary audience instead of to myself.
Linda
Delightful picture book about a farmer who cannot keep his horses from frolicking all night long. Great illustrations. Those silly horses!

The meter is a little too pat...but kids will like the idea of the horses staying up all night and playing.
Paula
A farmer tries to change the behavior of his rowdy horses who play all night and sleep all day.

This story is sure to get a giggle or two from the preschool set. Love McMullan's illustrations.

My daughter is in Kindergarten, and she thought this book was so funny. Cute read.

A farmer learns a lesson about trying to over-control his barn of goofy horses.
Susan
The picture with horses playing cards pushed it to four stars for me.
Jen
Cute, silly story. Good for older kids' story time ( preschool and up)
Marina
Oh, silly farmer. You think you can outwit your horses? Guess again!
Edward Sullivan
Farmer does not like his horses horsing around. Great use of color.

When the farmer's away, the horses will play... A cute story about what the animals are up to when they aren't being watched...
Kim Patton
Fun rhyming story about horses on a farm who won't work during the day because they are playing all night and the farmer who tries to stop them from playing.
Kate

Absolutely ridiculous, very funny and quite silly - all describe this book of horse shenanigans. Filled with vibrant illustrations and rhymes. This could be fun for horse lovers I do suppose, but these illustrations are quite goofy. Any one on a farm theme would benefit from adding this one to their library pile.

Farmer is mystified. Why are all his horses nodding off on their jobs during the day? The young colts should be helping him run the farm; instead, they're snoring and sleeping. Determined to get down to the bottom of it all, Farmer decides to spy on the horseplay that's been happening at night. Horses tossing silly notes, playing hide-and-seek and duck duck goose. Horse pucky or horse play--when will it end?

Karma Wilson grew up an only child of a single mother in the wilds of North Idaho. Way back then (just past the stone age and somewhat before the era of computers) there was no cable TV and if there had been Karma could not have recieved it. TV reception was limited to 3 channels, of which one came in with some clarity. Karma did the only sensible thing a lonely little girl could do…she read or pl...more
