Horribly convoluted, poorly written attempt at a spy novel. Utterly unreadable.

I had never heard of Van Lustbader when I picked this up, I was mainly drawn by the Bourne product name which usually guarantees quality in my experience of the Ludlum works.

Lustbader has vainly attempted to appeal to the short attention spans of a younger audience though lacks any real story-telling panache, consistently offering one and two (sometimes three) page scenes that cause the story to stop-and-start, not e...more

‘The Bourne Imperative’ by Eric Van Lustbader
Published by Orion, 24th May 2012. ISBN: 978-1-4091-1645-5

I read the earlier books by Robert Ludlum in the 1970’s and by the time he wrote The Bourne Identity I was a huge fan. But following his death, although I was aware that Eric Van Lustbader was continuing the series featuring Jason Bourne, I never felt any compunction to read them. However, when The Bourne Imperative was sent to me for review I decided to give it a go.

Still a great series. Exciting, fast paced.

The man Jason Bourne fishes out of the freezing sea is near death, half-drowned and bleeding profusely from a gunshot wound. He awakens with no memory of who he is or why he was shot-and Bourne is eerily reminded of his own amnesia. Then Bourne discovers that the Mossad agent named Rebeka is so determined to find this injured man that she has gone off the grid, cut her ties to her agency, and is now being stalked by Mossad's most feared killer. Like lots of people, I've long been a fan of the Jason Bourne series. And when Mr. Ludlum died, I thought we had lost a fine novelist. His vocabulary was impressive.

Van Lustbader has never been my favorite author. The previous Jason Bourne adventure he penned surprised me: I liked it. Then came this one. And I was again disappointed. Mr. Van Lustbader trades a decent vocabulary for the constant and completely unnecessary use of the famed "f" word. It isn't pleasant reading.

Add to that a book th...more

This action-packed thriller is the latest in the popular series starring Jason Bourne, a black ops agent whose identity as a spy has obliterated his recollection of who he really is. This is the tenth book in the series; the first three were written by Robert Ludlum himself before his death in 2001.
Jason Bourne has enemies not just because of his position in world of spies, counter-spies and international crime, but personal ones. Throughout the years he has made enemies in every aspect of crimi...more

When I got the book, I thought it was written by Robert Ludlum, but I was mistaken. There are several "Bourne" books written by Eric Van Lustbader whom I now know was given permission by Ludlum's estate to continue writing "Bourne" novels. Ludlum died in 2001, and someone forgot to tell me. When I saw both names on the audible audiobook, I thought perhaps it was a collaborative effort, like James Patterson and Maxine Paetro. But no, the sole author is Lustbader and he just doesn't do it for me....more

Jason Bourne pulls out an amnesiac like himself and then caroms around Europe, Middle-East and Mexico to boot, always playing catch up. Almost every character coming into contact with Bourne, Treadstone team and allied characters, turn out to work for the other side. There is a middle eastern angle with Mossad angle to spice up the antagonism. The involvement of Chinese and Mexicans give it a distinct James Bond feel.

Of late, I get the feeling that Jason Bourne novels are being written with the...more

SUMMARY: A Mossad camp outside of Israel. A Mossad operative/assassin off the grid. An unconscious man who barely escapes death thanks to Jason Bourne. A mythical assassin known by many aliases. The CEO of an energy company. The CEO of another company. Two drug lords. A senator. A supermodel. The Chinese Secret Service. This and other storylines are weaved seamlessly together in this book.

CONS: Even while keeping track of characters and deaths, there are so many plot twists, double crosses, trip...more

Jeremy Renner makes a great new Tread Stone Agent. Hope to see the movie, and maybe the next one will have both Jeremy Renner and Matt Damon!

This book is quite an improvement upon the previous Bourne books by Mr.Lustbader.While the previous few books had Leonid Arkadin as a very formidable figure, sometimes outshining Bourne, this one has brought Bourne back to the front. It is reminiscent of 'The Bourne Legacy' which I liked very much as it portrayed Bourne as an exceptionally competent agent who could tackle almost any situation. In this book, Bourne gets the better of Ilan Halevy, a ruthless Mossad killer.I like the Bourne books for...more

Hmmm...what to say about this book? A lot of unpleasant people get killed. Some unpleasant people do not get killed. Some slightly less unpleasant people also get killed. Pretty much everyone is double-crossing at least one other person, and everybody wants the money/power/validation. Some of the characters are pretty much incomprehensible, yet interesting in a watching-an-accident sort of way. It's all very exciting and convoluted and you don't know who can trust whom. (The best answer is, don'...more

I like the Bourne movies, but I've never been able to get past the first few chapters of the third book. I think it's probably because those first few books are awfully dated (and the movies stray so far from them that they're hardly similar any more), and I was hoping that even though I hadn't read the books between this one and those first few that I might like it better. I think I did, though there are definitely things I was missing because I didn't know the recent history of the characters....more

The saga is over! Fifty-four days long and many painful pages, storylines, plots, poorly written sequels, unrealistic character development, and a slew of painful hours of narration have finally come to an end. Eric Lustbader's taking over of the JASON BOURNE series torch was one of the most painful transitions I have seen and the books pushed deeper and deeper into a literary miasma. Thank God that is over. While Lustbader did open this book up to something interesting, Bourne finding an amnesi...more

While I like the Bourne series I have to confess the character is beginning to wear thin on me. Wear thin in that he's becoming two deminsional. He travels all over the world. He speaks every language known to man. He wins all his fights. And he absorbs more punishment that a krypton-clad Superman---and still keeps on ticking like a Timex!!

How about less mindless action and more story? More suspense. A real puzzler to win with sudden jabbing nightmarish flashes of searing action interspersed wit...more

This was a fast paced book and will translate well into a movie but lacked many details I love about books which are feelings and thoughts and the intricacies of those in the face of the story. The Bourne character is seemingly much more at ease with himself in this story and the complexities of the "spy" part of the book are interesting. It wasn't a "have to stay up and finish" kind of book but entertaining reading nonetheless

I'm a huge fan of the Jason Bourne adventure series and as I've said before Eric Van Lustbader ( this is his 6th Bourne novel ) is carrying on for the deceased Robert Ludlum in grand style.I actually feel this book is worth 3.5 stars.Fast paced non stop action, adventure, globe trotting, suspense, and intrigue are all in abundance in this latest in the series. Bourne and his Treadstone accomplices Soraya, Peter & Hendricks are all back working together to solve this latest mystery.Jason Bour...more

Eric Van Lustbader continues the legacy. If you're looking at a semblance of newness, plot then don't read. But for pure fiction and reading it off at multiple go with no worries about picking up the plot, this book does it all.

Jason has started to appear as a side hero :) with a lot of earlier character artistes gaining prominence which gives a nice twist to the whole story.

I have really enjoyed all the Jason Bourne movies over the years and this is the first Jason Bourne book I've actually read. Actually, I listened to this on CD. It was a decent book, but it wasn't my favorite. None of the characters really drew me in, including Jason Bourne. I think I need to give Robert Ludlum another shot, maybe read the Bourne series from the beginning.
Joel Anderson
Typically action-packed Bourne story. Lustbader has done a commendable job of picking up the Ludlum character and managing to remain true to both the character and his own writing style. In typical fashion, Bourne manages to save the day, though with close calls along the way. Some characters return but end up making their final appearances in the series...one will have to read the story to find out who.

Suffice it to say, there are forces after Bourne, from many different angles and organization...more

I was disappointed in the latest Jason Bourne thriller. For me there were actually too many characters that it was hard to maintain focus on the action. Its not a vote against Eric Van Lustbader who was charged by the Ludlum estate to continue the legacy following Robert Ludlum's death. Some of his earlier effots have been OK but not thia time. The mix includes the usual Threadstone line-up, the Isaraeli Mossad, a Mexican drug lord, a Chinese politian and a cast of thousands which is the problem...more

Two of my favorite authors are Ludlum and Lustbader. When Lustbader took over writing the Bourne series for Ludlum's estate, I couldn't have been more excited. This latest book will not disappoint Jason Bourne fans. Lustbader has successfully morphed the story into his own. Plenty of action; plenty of twists.

Another page turner by Robert Ludlum. Treadstone fights a Mexican drug lord, a Chinese hierarchy, and an American company as once again Jason Bourne is involved heavily in the plot along with Mossad agents. A great book to read for adventure and keeping you on the edge of your seat...highly recommend.

Eric Van Lustbader continues to write in a high-paced, easy-to-digest, fun style. The plot of the Bourne series has begun to lose some of its originality and there are only so many super-human feats and so many conspiracies that one can create. Still enjoyable if you like Bourne or spy novels...

What a terrible read. The story was too convoluted and too many characters and things going on. Could not finish fast enough as I slowly got through the book. Won't be reading any more books with Ludlum's name on it that wasn't written by Ludlum. It was so bad I thought it might be me. So I picked up the latest Vince Flynn book and its as captivating as his preceding books. Do yourself a favor and take a pass on The Bourne Imperative.

Forgot how engaging Bourne is (read this in anticipation of the newest movie). Such a fast read but well-worth the time. Mossad, Mexican Drug Cartels, Chinese corrupt Politicians and US CIA all roll into this "Better than Bond" story! Great plot and fast read!

Reading books in the Bourne series became addictive sometime ago. The Bourne Imperative seems stale. It is a story but the characters do not really develop. This was obviously written just to keep the series alive; you wouldn't understand much of the story without having read the previous books.

I am starting to loose interest in the Bourne series. The plot is interesting right from the start and keeps you engaged . I feel the end could have been better . I wonder sometimes whether we really to drag the story to make the size of the book bigger

It seems that Jason Bourne is no closer to figuring out his past. Though he did have a memory resurface, this book is more about his friends that him. He is pulled into a plot with so many twists and turns. Unfortunately his loses are high this time.

Bourne Imperative takes Jason Bourne from Finland to Mexico. He is still being hunted by every nations. His past is still unknown except for his name David Webb before he is Jason Bourne. He helped a Mossad agent Rebeka to find the man she has been following.

This book is nothing but intrigue which will keep the readers reading to find out the why and several plots that are happening at the same time. There are so many pieces of the puzzle but to understand exactly what is going on, the readers...more

The book kept your attention from the first as Jason Bourne battles a rogue Mossad operative and the Treadstone directors look for a mole within their agency. I am so glad that Eric Van Lustbader continues the tale of Jason Bourne.
