description

Ten years after the publication of Wicked, beloved novelist Gregory Maguire returns at last to the land of Oz. There he introduces us to Liir, an adolescent boy last seen hiding in the shadows of the castle after Dorothy did in the Witch. Bruised, comatose, and left for dead in a gully, Liir is shattered in spirit as well as in form. But he is tended to at the Cloister of Saint Glinda by the silent novice called Candle, who wills him back to life with her musical gifts. What dark force left Liir in this condition? Is he really Elphaba's son? He has her broom and her cape—but what of her powers? Can he find his supposed half-sister, Nor, last seen in the forbidding prison, Southstairs? Can he fulfill the last wishes of a dying princess? In an Oz that, since the Wizard's departure, is under new and dangerous management, can Liir keep his head down long enough to grow up?

This book was so satisfying. Liir, son of Elphaba, comes into his own and after 266 pages, he begins to do incredible things to help other people, lead, unite, take the helm of his mother’s legacy. And it’s so realistic because he does it while still in a state of confusion and self-doubt, obstacles he never really overcomes (neither did Elphaba really). I love how everyone says to him “if only Elphaba was here to see this…” The Bird Congress aka Witch Nation (charged by Liir to be the...more

I made a mistake reading this book. I should have known from the ending of Wicked that it wouldn't get much better. But I held out hope. My hope was that "well, maybe the ending I didn't get in Wicked, I'll get here, and maybe that was the plan all along, to fully revise things in a sequel, as that would be more the author's OWN and he'd be less pigeon-holed."

Alas, that wasn't the case.

Again, 98% of this book is a great read. But the two main problems I had with the first book ...more

With the onslaught of emo and everyone alway whinning about everything in their lives and waves of depression abounding everywhere, this book would fit right in with the times. The main character moans and cries. Constantly over and over and over again says that he can do nothing. Is alive for no reason. Has no talents. And boo hoo it drones on and on.

I thought the whinning in the first book Wicked was enough. The witch going on and on and on about she never did anything in her life. ...more

I've read a lot of terrible books, but this one possibly wins the distinction of being the worst book that I have ever read. It was awful.

An explanation....I liked Wicked and I have read all of Maguire's other books. Every time a new Maguire book came out, I read it and they seemed to progressively go downhill. I didn't expect Son of s Witch to be very good, but I wanted to give it a chance.

The only reason that this book was possibly written, is due to the success of the stage musical o...more

I borrowed this book from Heather. What an interesting story. THe book is in an off character OZ. The back story and premis are the same. I like that you don't know what you want to know - is he or isn't her the son of the Witch, until the very last of the book. I mean VERY last. The story was good. The characters were believable for where they are. I thought the use of dragons and connections from the past were good. I want to know if this will be a trilogy? daughter of the son of a w...more

This is an excellent follow-up to Wicked, and it is so gratifying to know what becomes of so many of the characters - though there really must be a third, because we still don't know what happens to Nor (well, we have the graffiti suggestion that she is alive and free), and didn't Maguire say that her future was the impetus for this novel? Anyway, finding out what happens to Liir is, of course, fantastic, and although we pretty much knew all along he really was Elphaba's and Fiyero's son, the ba...more

MEH!!! I don't know if I can really review this book, I may have to reread it (if I can) I could not get in to it at all. Maybe I read it too sporaticly and it never melded for me, I don't know. All I can say at this time is that it was not so great. Nothing seemed to make sense, everything he did seemed so disconnected from the next thing. Then at the end I didn't feel like anything got tied up. I know Mr. Maguire left it WIDE open for another book, but I think somethings should have bee...more

"Wicked" kind of annoyed me from time to time ... inspite of the fact that I loved reading Elphaba's story. If that book fell a little short ... then this book (the sequel) completely misses the mark. Maguire did okay when he was writing on the basis of someone else's work ... but here on his own he flounders. Whatever it was that did not sit well with me from "Wicked" is found tenfold in the pages of "Son of a Witch." At first I thought that it was just Maguire's t...more

For as much as I loved "Wicked" I was truly disappointed by the sequel (though, I know I will pick up the third installment...I am a sucker).

Just as in "Wicked" I enjoyed the sub-themes of feminism and political activism. The connection to mordern day are plenty, and it is nice to see strong female leads. I am also a sucker for 'redemption' stories and it was good to see Liir come into his own and try to make amends for the very poor decisions he made in the past.

After The Disappointment of Lost, I was biased against Son of a Witch from page one. I tried my best to limit my bias, but as this grandiose story unfolded, the disappointed feeling returned again and again.

I enjoyed the larger-than-life, sweeping feeling of the novel at times, but Liir's character was too whiney and confused. Most of his time is spent wandering around Oz, wondering what to do. This doesn't make for very compelling reading. The end of the book fell flat, ...more

I liked this story better than "Wicked". It has similar elements of political intrigue and activism to "Wicked" but it is painted with a more strident brush.
I am a great an of Maguire and enjoy while being grossed out by his realistic (read graphic) descriptions of nearly every aspect of life.
"Son of a Witch" is Liir's story and throughout "Wicked" you never really find out if Liir really is Elphaba's son. In SOW, the same lack of explanation of Liir...more

Right now, I'm kinda surprised that I'm liking Son of a Witch a lot better than Wicked. I think it has a couple of things going for it that Wicked did not... namely, that for everything that Maguire did with the characters in his first Oz book, the plot was nothing but a ticking clock. You knew where it was going to end up- the Witch as a puddle of watery goo on the floor. No matter how well he writes, as a reader, you're just biding your time 'til that famous scene. With Son of Witch, Maguire s...more

I enjoyed Son of a Witch more than Wicked. I can say without a doubt that I didn't find a chapter more boring than another to the point of practically skimming through it, which happened with Wicked. I cannot say that the ending left me entirely satisfied, though, because, truth be told, there was really no conclusion, nothing that seemed to have been resolved, no real point to anything. No resolution, you may say.

Liir's search for Nor is never fully resolved or even really explored outside of...more

I was interested in this sequel to Wicked because I was intrigued by the fantasy universe created in the first book. Son of a Witch picks up right after the Witch's death and follows the character Liir, the quiet boy who left the mauntery with the Elphaba in the first book. The book addresses questions like whether Liir is really Elphaba's son (and no conclusive answer is given though the implication is clear), what happens to the Animals now that their advocate is dead, and what happens to Glin...more

For some people I am sure this is a 5 star book but not for me. It is full of smut. I just did not feel very good the rest of the day after attempting to read it.It was not uplifting to me at all. If written without the smut it might have been a good story however, it might have still affected me negitivly. Many parts seemed so dark. I like a different type of book. I realize this is the same description I gave Wicked. However this is a book about a boy trying to find and discover who he is. I l...more

Sequel to Wicked. I was pleasantly surprised at how well done this sequel was. It answered many questions that were left unanswered in Wicked. I daresay it was better than Wicked; though perhaps that is because I had to learn the intricate societies that dwelled within Wicked first and which encompassed much of the first book.

Here we have the main character of Liir and of his finding himself in the process of all his trials. His quiet and self-deprecating nature and a strength that ...more

I really enjoyed Son of a Witch, despite the feeling that it’s just an interlude in a larger story. With Wicked, I had lots of preconceptions about the characters, and whilst I liked the slant on them that the book provided, I suppose it did get in the way a bit. With Son of a Witch, I didn’t have those same obstacles to get past.

I enjoyed finding out more about Liir. I felt he was shabbily treated in Wicked, so it was interesting to follow his development here. I did want to shout at him ...more

I'm not sure why this has an average of 3.32. It's a great entertaining and thought-provoking book. Maybe I'm prejudiced toward GM, but I loved it, and think it came to its inevitable conclusion. Can't wait for the next (which goes into Mother Yackle if anyone's following the series - he read a bit at last year's Grub Street conference).

I just looked at some of the other reviews and disagree on so many levels. The kinship of Elphaba and Liir is demonstrated quite well through his behavior a...more

I agree with some of the reviews that say the story was promising and had potential to go many places, and then fell flat. I realized that half way through the book, not a lot had happened, and I could tell that the pace wouldn't be picking up. After finishing the book, I realized that this book is merely the part 2 of the Wicked Trilogy- it was merely a segway to the next book. None of the mysteries were solved, though there were traces throughout the book that it would come much much later. Th...more
