Books like Embrace make me wonder whether or not I hate myself.

Books like Embrace make me wonder whether or not I hate myself.

Why else would I go into what I recognized as a risky book with high hopes and expect it to be good? I could only be setting myself up for disaster. Three-hundred sixty-nine pages later, sixty of those skipped and another one-hundred skimmed for the sake of my health, my hopes have been thrown into a bag of dog crap, set on fire, and left on my porch for me to discover. A few feet away, a piece of paper is taped up with nothing but a smiley face on it.

Our heroine Violet is whiny, selfish, and naive. We got off on the wrong foot at the start because of how she described her best friend, among other things, and we never got on better terms. Her motivation for saving someone else's life? How it will affect her. Not because saving someone else's life is the right thing to do, but because seeing them die will make her miserable. Her characterization is also inconsistent; an incident where a teacher tried to sexually assault her is supposed to affect how she interacts with other people, but it gets brought up twice and never mentioned again. I unfortunately know from personal experience that it is not that easy.

She also can't make a good decision to save her life, and I mean this almost literally. Given the choice between spending time with a miserable friend and spending time with an exiled angel you just met, don't completely trust, and know is following you around, I would certainly choose door number one because I have a brain like that. Violet charges headfirst through door number two and never stops to so much as shake off the wood chips.

The aforementioned Phoenix is one of the creepiest, most untrustworthy love interests I have ever seen and Violet comes to trust him so easily that it nearly drove me batty. Thirty pages is all it takes her to go from thinking he's creepy to having no problem with it when he shows up in her room in the middle of the night while she's sleeping. His endless innuendos weren't romantic or sexy; they made me a little sick, actually. Another point that is not romantic? How he has no issue with manipulating Violet's emotions as he pleases. The symbolism of Violet tasting apples when he came around was not lost on me, though I wish it could have been so I could have rolled my eyes less.

Her other love interest Lincoln is no better for different reasons, but there is more to say about Phoenix. What the two of them share is a violent strong enough to make me fear for Violet no matter how much I dislike her. What if that anger gets taken out on her one day instead of a wall or a door? Entirely too much time was spent on the love triangle when each of them should have had five-hundred yard restraining orders in place on the other two. First books do have to do a lot of set-up, but when the book is almost entirely set-up and angst with very little action, a reader can't be blamed if they don't want to read the second book. The first book needs action too.

The "cosmic order" of Embrace didn't appear to make much sense. Put together a man and a woman and give them complementary powers. Then give them a deep connection that affects their very souls and say they are meant to be partners that fight against the exiled angels. But can they be together romantically if their deep connection happens to give birth to romantic feelings? Absolutely not! This feels more like an excuse for Lincoln and Violet to angst about how they can't be together than anything.

Sure, I pick out bad books to read sometimes just because I expect them to be horrible or because I want to learn something from their poor quality, but I swear I requested this novel with only the purest intentions. There was no expectation for it to be fantastic because it was risky, but I expected it to be readable at the very least. What I got was a book devoid of a single redeeming quality. I regret my reading experience turned out so badly, but I don't regret anything I've said because every word of it is the truth.(less)

Sadly, I didn't fall love with it, but it's still a fun book full of plot twists that kept my attention throughout.

Violet is our main character, she's just learning that there's a whole world out there she didn't know existed, and she's right in the middle of it all. She is one of those characters that is easy to like, with confidence and independence. I liked how she handled herself in tough situations, but not in her relationships. Both guys are undoubtedly hot, and I liked how they didn't beat around the bush with their attraction to each other, but the love triangle is particularly cliché. We've got Lincoln, the good guy, who she loves with all of her heart but, of course, it's impossible for them to be together. Then we've got Pheonix, the bad boy, who loves her more than she loves him. Even though there was great chemistry between them and Violet, I found both guys bland- personality-wise. There were also a few things I questioned. She seemed to put all of her trust in Pheonix who is unquestionably manipulative, and obviously filled with dark secrets. She seemed blind to things that were simply sensical to anyone else. As for Lincoln, I loved his character at the start, but his appearance in the book becomes scarce after the first quarter so we don't get to know him very much. Regardless, I won't deny the romantic scenes are filled with passion and lust.

The intriguing plot is what I enjoyed the most about this book. Angel stories have rarely impressed me, thus I'm happy that the original lore in Embrace had me constantly curious to find out more about these angels and their conspiracies. In addition to being beautifully written, the novel introduces twists that are well thought out, as well as clever. We're left with a sense that nothing and no one is to be trusted in this world; it's intense and a bit unnerving. There are a few details I disbelieved in the story, though. How her best friend easily believes her when she explains she is part angel -in a food court no less, or how her dad acts oblivious, even neglectful towards his 17 year old daughter. I also never caught on to why it was forbidden for angel "teams" to be together. While I love forbidden romance, I like to know why it is so.

Fresh and enticing, Embrace is a delightful angel novel that, even though I didn't absolutely love it, I'd still recommend to fans of paranormal books who enjoy a fast paced, intriguing story, with an abundance of romance, betrayal and secrets.

First, ANGEL novels - with the exception of Angelfall series by Susan Ee and Daughter of Smoke and Bone series Laini Taylor.

I really liked the different angel spin Shirvington put on this story. I think it was a good idea, a good story line, and amazing writing. There were just a few things that weren't very good: Shirvington mentioned towards the end of the book that Violet was terrified of her old teacher (you'll understand once you read the book) but I didn't really get that vibe throughout the book. And the embrace, which should have been amazing, breathtaking, and should have sucked me right in, didn't. It should have been a climax to the story and it wasn't. And at the moments that should have been groundbreaking and momentous, she made the moments boring. Those moments are when the reader should be totally sucked in and can't hear her brothers screaming bloody murder into her ear, but it wasn't. And, although this book had a love triangle, it was only a semi one, so I think it really helped the story.

In the love triangle there are three people: Violet, Lincoln, and Phoenix. But the thing is, there really isn't a love triangle. Violet chooses Phoenix, and I can't for the life of me figure out why. (Don't worry, that's not a spoiler. It is a small detail in the whole story.) Lincoln just seemed so nice and all, perfect boyfriend material. But on the other hand, Phoenix was smokin' hot and totally swoon worthy. Towards the end of the book, I liked Phoenix better. And, although he did something bad (I won't tell) in the end of the book, I still like him. Usually when a boy messes up and does something like framing the girl for a crime he committed, I despise that boy. But with Phoenix, I like him just as much. I think part of the reason why is that Shirvington didn't make what he did groundbreaking and world-ending to it didn't really sink in as bad.
Lincoln is the perfect perfect boy. He's nice, cute, and totally swoon-worthy. But he wasn't as kick-ass as Phoenix. Don't get me wrong though, I love both of them.
And, last but not least, there's Violet. I think she was a very strong female character and I'm so glad that there wasn't a huge love triangle because I would have hated that competing against the fact that she was kick-ass.

All in all, I really enjoyed it and can't wait for the next book, Enticed, to come out September 2012.

You know that kind of book...the one when you start reading that book, you're immediately swept into the fantasy world created? The one where you're connecting with the characters - laughing and cringing and reacting with them? The one where you stay up too late reading, no matter what you have going on the next day, because you can't wait to find out where the story is going? The one where you find yourself frantically turning the pages, but then realizing you want to reread sections and slow yourself down so you make sure you actually process the story because you're going to need to understand it later? The one where you finish it, but just want to read it all over again because it was so, so good and you were so engrossed in it? Yeah...all of that was EMBRACE for me. I should have known, when the Sourcebooks rep told Sarah and I at NCTE that this was her favorite book they had there and we would love it, that I really would, but I was still surprised by how much I liked it. I was completely immersed in this all-consuming read.

I've read quite a few angels/fallen angels stories over the last several years, and I've liked some of them more than others, but this one blows all the rest of them away for me. The writing of this debut book is in first person, past tense in a straight-forward style and is engaging as it propels the story forward. It's one of those that's almost hard to explain what it was the grabbed me because I enjoyed it so much. Let's start with the characters though. Violet is a teenager with determination and spunk and sass and heart, I mean, this girl can kick some serious butt! She's a really likeable, believeable character, but she's also a little lost because she's been kind of alone her whole life since her mother died at her birth. Her dad has never really recovered, so she relies on her only best friend (who is a trip), and her "trainer" Lincoln to keep her going. She has strength within herself that she has yet to fully realize, and once she turns seventeen and learns about the world she's destined to be a part of without ever knowing it, everything changes for her. She is a Grigori, but she's different than all the others. Her inner strength and will is what makes her so powerful in the end, but she has to work to get there. She's written in a way that I just really connected with, especially her strength and determination to do things her own way on her own terms.

Then there are the boys. Girls are going to be swooning over these two. We have Lincoln, who Violet's in love with but doesn't show the same interest back at her, and when she find out why, it changes everything between them. Then there's Phoenix, who shows up in her life, and has secrets that he's not willing to reveal, but she is drawn to him and the way that he is there for her and takes care of her. Violet doesn't know it at first, but she's going to need both of these guys on her side to help get her through what's coming next and the decision she has to make of whether to embrace her Grigori side or not. The choice is hers, but she needs the guidance and support from both of these important guys in her life in order to help her make the life-changing decision. And, yes, there are some steamy, heated scenes with both of the guys (but not too graphic), and yes, it's triangle-ish, but not in the overdone, forced way that I sometimes don't like in young adult books - it seems realistic for the situation Violet is in and for the way her feelings are swirling. I have a feeling this will definitely spark a "Team" debate among the masses once they get their hands on this book. However, each of the guys seems more layered than they originally appear, and I can only guess we'll be discovering more and more depth about each of them throughout the rest of the series.

The storyline is fast-paced and full of action and decisions to be made and life or death situations and excitement. The world of the angels and Grigori is well-rounded and fully explained throughout the book, and it's a fresh take on some of the same backstories that we've heard before. I fully enjoyed reading this book and discovering this world that Violet has been destined to be a part of. It's detailed and complicated and we get to know and understand it just as Violet does as we take this journey to realization with her. She's not perfect though, and there are things that happen that we, as readers, will probably think she should have realized, but we aren't living with her demons and secrets and youthful outlook and angst and hope. There is quite a lot going on in this book, but ultimately it's about Violet learning about this world and figuring out how she feels about being a part of it or not and what's most important to her in her life. She has to learn to make decisions based on what she needs and wants and what's right for her, but also how it impacts those around her. It's about Violet's journey to self-realization and it's full of emotion, but also deals with the struggle between light and dark and whether or not it's a clear line between the two. Light wouldn't be needed if there was no dark, but are light and dark so clearly identified? This is the stage for the entire story. Because of this, everything is complicated in this book - there are no clear distinctions on what is the right thing to do, and that makes it all the more intriguing.

I'm sure there are going to be people who don't connect with this book like I did, or who pick apart some things that I overlooked because I was so engaged in it, but that's how it is with every book. Different ones connect with different people, and I was definitely absorbed in this one. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, and I picked it up at just the right time when I needed to decompress from the last book I had read. I know I'm going to be desperately waiting to get my hands on book 2, ENTICED, and book 3, EMBLAZE, which, thankfully, Sourcebooks will be releasing in six month intervals so we won't have to wait so long to find out what will happen with Violet's journey next! OMG OMG OMG! This book blew me away and all other angel books out of my mind, well maybe not my Hush, Hush but close. This author wrote an amazing book, it was mind blowing.

The characters in this book are real and kickass. Violet is just plain amazing, she is someone to look up to. She makes you feel like your in the book going along with her on all her journeys, fights, and most intimate moments. The only thing that kills me is how blind she is to Lincolns feelings and how fast she turns from him when he was trying to protect her. It broke my heart I was sobbing right in the beginning of the book which is a good thing, you want it to get better, you want to know what she is going to do next, and most of all will she forgive him and herself along the way with some of the choices she makes?!

Add in Phoenix god just writing this part about him has me all tingly! What a freaking character he is by far THE best character I have read. He has so many different parts to him and you never know what is real, what hes going to do and how is he really feeling?! I feel sometimes he truly does love Violet but he does so much manipulation then in the end the BIG revelation pushes him away from her kind of like Lincoln.

Now Lincoln again another amazing character (this book is full of them). He makes my heart beat wildly. He is by the books, no nonsense head over heels in LOVE with Violet and she is blind in a way. He makes that one mistake which I wouldnt call it a mistake and she turns and doesnt go back, sometimes he feels her resolve but she pushes Phoenix in his face which doesnt really help and all he wants is her and all he has eyes for is her. God i felt for him in this book like no other character. he broke my heart with everything he tries and does for Violet.

This book has it all for us the fallen angels, the good the bad, the light and the dark the good and the evil, nail biting, edge of your seat suspense which almost killed me, the love traingle, the fights, the makeups and breakups , friendship and betrayals all wrapped into one pretty little book. This book I dont think could get any better and I am hoping the Sequel will be just as good if not better than this one!!!

I liked the writing and the mythology and Violet and Lincoln and Griffin.

I hated Phoenix and everything he did and said and was and that Violet didn't seem to realize that raped her. Both in mind and body. And this made me soooooooooooooooooooo angry. At the very LEAST he sexually assaulted her.

If she doesn't come to terms with the fact that he manipulated her every, single step of the way and have some actual emotional fall out from that in the next book, I might just burn them both.

Kicks Halo's arse...loved it!
I've been rather disappointed in most of the Angel books that have come my way recently - too slow, too insipid (seriously, I couldn't even read Halo without snorts of derision and finally gave up for the sake of my colleagues sanity) and too whiny.

I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. Jessica Shrivington has created an engrossing story rich with spiritual and angelic lore, based on religious and cultural history that most readers will recognize. Believable dialogue and character development add to the novel's attraction.

This story features Violet Eden, a young girl raised solely by her father when her mother dies in childbirth. Fiercely independent and artistically talented, Vi has surrounded herself with a few choice friends, particularly Lincoln, an older guy who starts out simply her self-defence trainer, but turns into a devoted and treasured confidante. Upon her seventeenth birthday, Violet experiences several unique occurrences: she is given a mysterious letter and bracelet from her mother, she begins to have vivid and confusing dreams and she has discovered unusual markings on her wrists. When Lincoln and his mysterious friend, Griffin, reveal that she is half-human and half-angel, Violet is faced with shock and fear as she learns that an angelic battle between good and evil forces are playing out on earth. She learns that she must make a decision of whether to embrace her angelic powers and become a part of this war, or deny her destiny and live her life in constant danger.

The theme of good versus evil is personified in the relationships that Violet experiences. While Lincoln represents good, Violet is approached by another angel named Phoenix. Shrivington creates a realistic storyline in Violet's sexual awakening and in Vi's exploration of her physical and emotional attraction to these men. The character of Violet is at its best here, as a typical 17-year old's reactions to romantic love is portrayed with all the insecurities and impulsive actions to which readers are sure to relate. Shrivington handles this love triangle with ease.

The last part of the novel describes Violet's decision to "embrace", an act that is fraught with physical danger and permanence. When Violet learns that she is spiritually paired with Lincoln, she faces an uncertain future. I eagerly anticipate the next novel and I highly recommend this book to fans of the genre.(less)

I also really enjoyed the love triangle in this one. It was well-executed. Both Phoenix and Lincoln had their own appealing qualities, though again, both were incredibly flawed. Lincoln was constantly battling between whether it was a good thing or a bad thing to be with Violet because, ultimately, he should never have allowed himself to fall for his Grigori partner. He loved her with every fiber of his being, thus it's hard to hate him. Phoenix is sort of the complete opposite of Lincoln. While he tried protecting Violet, he is an exile--the type of person she is meant to kill or send to some unknown place for judgment. Yet she can't help but be attracted to him because every time they touch the sparks literally fly. And let me tell you, the romance that happens in this love triangle is HOT!

I easily connected with almost all the characters, besides the baddies. Of course, they were just deranged, but even then their reasoning was somewhat believable. When lies were revealed or hidden identities came to light, I ate everything up. This book is certainly full of surprises and light foreshadowing that one would never even think about until you made the connection later on in the story.

My one qualm is that the story was littered with cliches here and there. And they came at the worst moments possible when you would never want a cliche and BAM! there it is! While they're not plentiful, they were common enough to bug me and, in my opinion, interrupt the flow of the story. What was so real because the connection to the characters was so strong was temporarily lost because a cliche was used to keep the story flowing. Literally falling into a guys arms, legitimate sparks flying, thinking of someone else when you're getting kissed, kissing someone to shut them up. As enjoyable as it is, I know Shirvington is capable of so much more because she's an amazing author. Still, part of me has to love these cliches! This story, gah! What is there to truly hate?

I eagerly await the release of EMBRACE and after reading this book, I'm sure you'll be awaiting its release, too! (less)

This book was something that I consider to be a new spin on the angel/fallen angel sub-genre these days. I will admit that it took me a while to finish this book, but it was an interesting plot and storyline with interesting characters. Here are some things I liked and disliked about this book to justify why I gave it 3.5 stars on Goodreads.

Pros:

-The love triangle--and my what a triangle there is. Some books don’t have such an intense triangle with all of the characters, but this book sure did. You could cut through the tension and awkward moments with a knife! I can’t decide which team I’m on, but usually since I pick the bad boy, I’ll say I’m Team Phoenix. (Disclaimer: For now!)
-Language & Steamy scenes. Okay, so I know that this book may not be appropriate for kids under 16 or 17...I’m 24 and I was blushing during some of the scenes. I don’t mind “sailor” language...that’s how teenagers talk in REAL LIFE. I liked that aspect of it because even though there were some...expletives...Shrivington kept it real. I can appreciate that. The “steamy scenes” were explicit, but there was lots of making out and...other stuff, but the author kept it risque without crossing the line into raunchy, gross, and inappropriate for YA. (Some of you may consider this particular point a CON....that’s your opinion, but this is just mine.)
-Quotes: LOVED the quotes at the beginning of each chapter...I considered them a foreshadowing tool that Shrivington “embraced” very well. [Ha!]

Cons:
-Absent parents: I know it makes it easier for kids to run around and be whatever they need to be, but I am so tired of the use of this technique to make the story flow. If the parents are really that annoying...make the characters college-age, ya know?
-Whiny, Selfish MC: Oh heavens...Violet is a teenager, I get that, but she was just entirely too whiny and selfish for my taste. She was strong for mere moments before she fell to pieces...her resolve was flimsy at best, and her confusion between what she wanted with Mr. Dreamy Wings vs. Mr. Steamy Wings was incredibly irritating. (Maybe because I already knew who I personally wanted).
-Annoying BFF: Again, I know teens talk like valley girls and say annoying things and want to know EVERY intimate detail of each others lives, but seriously. Steph was a good friend, but the dialogue between her and Violet was like nails on a chalkboard to me.

“In the middle”:
-Fight scenes: So some gore is good...well described and choreographed fight scenes are better, but when they are described as moving super fast you can barely see them...I think of how the vampires move in Twilight and I giggle uncontrollably. There was a lot of punching, but some awesome weapons would have been nice.
-Character descriptions: Phoenix and Steph’s description were good, I could see them clearly in my mind, but I struggled to picture the rest of the characters, even Violet.
-Character development: I’d like to see Violet grow up a little more and I would like to know more about Lincoln and his past. Phoenix’s is VERY interesting!
-Mythology/Biblical references: I enjoyed the story about Lilith, and love to have some background, but biblical references weird me out when I’m reading about the naughty things two characters want to do to each other and seeing expletives that would offend someone of any religion.

Anyway, to wrap it up...I would recommend this book to YA readers 17 and over. Some of the scenes are too much for younger readers as far as I am concerned. I would die just knowing my little sister (who is almost 21) read those scenes. :) Overall, I really did like this book!(less)

I read this book in one sitting, but there were several times I almost put it down. It was only sheer force of determination to finish it that kept me from setting it aside--and I can almost guarantee I wouldn't have come back to it if I had. That said, it wasn't an awful book. I didn't want to throw it across the room at any point, nor did I immediately add Ms. Shirvington to my DO NOT READ list. I think I can chalk my ambivalence up to a few key things:

1) I felt like the author was good at the initial tug on my heart strings, but not so good with the follow-through. Just when I'd start to get interested and invested in one of Violet's challenges, the focus would shift elsewhere. Am I supposed to focus on the mystery of her dead mother's note? The bad stuff that happened to her at her old school? Her anger at Lincoln? Her confusion about Phoenix? The decision she has to make about embracing? The dead acquaintance? The dead Grigori? There was simply too much going on for each element to get its due, and it did not seem to blend into a seamless story.

2) I don't think the stakes were high enough or clear enough. Okay, sure, she wants to live a "normal" life, and being half angel might get in the way of that...but Violet doesn't really have a normal life to start. Her family is well off, her dad is never around and pretty much gives her the run of things, and she's spending most of her free time either doing artwork or hanging out with her crush, who lives alone in a warehouse flat and is many years older than her (more on that in a bit). So I don't buy that she's clinging to normalcy, even with the issues lingering from her past. And as far as what she has to do if and when she turns Grigori, well, they never get much into the specifics beyond some vague ideas that she'll have to send the exiled back to the angel realm. Considering how much time Lincoln has to spend with her (including not only training, but a couple of parties), I think it's fair to say that she wouldn't be leaving behind her life entirely.

A couple of people and a couple of Grigori die, but they're sort of faceless, and you have no real reason to care beyond Lincoln and Griffin caring. I can imagine why it's all such a big deal, but I don't feel like the book showed me why it was.

3) This sort of goes hand-in-hand with #1, but there were a ton of characters and barely any of them got enough screen time to make me care. Even the ones who did get screen time seemed almost excessive. Like Griffin's partner, whose name I even forget...she had no real function other than not liking Violet.

4) I know I was supposed to like Phoenix, but I just didn't. Even before I knew who/what he was, what he was doing, why he was like he was, etc., I still didn't like him. I felt a little sorry for him, and I don't mind him as a character. In fact, if I were planning to read the sequels, I would want to see more of him--as a character, but not as a love interest. The fact that Violet did like him made me like her less.

If you adore angel-centric books, then I won’t say you shouldn’t give this a try. It might be your thing…it just wasn’t mine.

Look I had great expectations when I stared to read this book. And with about 75 pages left in the book, I was extremely willing to give this 2 stars. The characters were great, well described and definable, the plot was interesting, loved its complexity and twists. However here was a list of things that I totally detested with just 75 pages left:

There have been some great entries into the YA fantasy world lately with angel lore, and after reading many positive reviews for this one, I thought I'd give it a shot. (It also didn't hurt that the cover is so gorgeous.)

Within the first 50 pages, I was pretty certain I wasn't a fan of this story. By the end, I actively despised it. Why? Let's start with the narrator, Violet. We've all heard this story before--teenage girl discovers she has some great, world-altering destiny, and life as she knows it is over. I agree that there needs to be some sort of adjustment period, because for anyone, that would be hard to swallow. But Violet Eden (yes, that's really her name) wins the prize for the whiniest, brattiest protagonist in the genre, in my opinion. The whole book is a constant stream of her angsting over everything, and being annoyed at everyone.

There's also her relationships with other characters. Her best friend acts ditzy at best (although she's apparently smart when no one else is around...?), and her main function in the story seems to be showing just how absolutely gorgeous Violet is and cooing over the guys in her life. At one point early on, the friend is saying how jealous she is of Violet's body, and Violet thinks about how she'd rather emphasize her beautiful face instead. Basically the only interactions between these two outside of the 'omg-you're-so-hot-Violet' scenarios are bizarre phone conversations to, I guess, keep the friend from fading into the background of the story. When Violet finally tells her the big secret no one else is supposed to know, it's in a *mall foodcourt*. Because nothing can be overheard there, obviously. A lot of these q&a scenes between Violet and some other characters occur around food, which makes me wonder if the author was hungry while writing them.

And then there are the guys, Lincoln and Phoenix. Honestly, I disliked them both, but Phoenix hands down is one of the creepiest, most obsessive love interests I've ever had the displeasure to read about. He manipulates, stalks, and is borderline controlling throughout the book. And yet, somehow, Violet thinks he's the safe option. I won't get into spoilers, but there is one scene between the two of them that made her characterization completely unbelievable and made me dislike her even more--she violates the one thing she said in the beginning of the story she was all about. Not okay. Lincoln has some serious anger and possession issues too, but at least he maintains some semi-normal qualities. And hey, at least he's less annoying than Violet.

Now, I know this is the first of a series, and that there needs to be a lot of setup and worldbuilding, but another main problem I had with this book is that nothing really happens. If I had to sum up the main events, it would be: Violet uncovers destiny, Violet asks questions, Violet is pissed, Violet asks more questions--and maybe does one or two things towards the end. But the "action", if you want to call it that, is paced very oddly, which could be because of the simplistic writing style. None of the tension holds--for example, there's a scene in which one of the main characters is in seeming mortal peril, and the bad guys are standing over him; Violet arrives, and said bad guys agree to leave if she'll listen to a story. No fight to the death, no mental battle of wills, just...a story.

My advice: there are a lot of good entries into the YA fantasy genre lately. Do yourself a favor and pass on this one. (less)

Ok now let me explain a bit more. This novel has a love triangle. I often side with one of the sides immediately and stick to it till the end, but I am SO annoyed that as SOON as Violet gets with someone, I start liking the other! I mean sheesh, Violet, why couldn't we agree on one man? I was confused, so I understand why Violet went from one to the other and just didn't know where her heart belonged to. Throughout the book I found Violet to be a bit childish, and sometimes even straight out hateful because of how she treated Lincoln, and then Pheonix, the other guy of the love triangle. I just did not enjoy her indecisive mentality and that she assumes everyone should give her a break because she just found out she will never live a normal life.

I really liked the plot, in that it was more dynamic, problems happen, they get solved, then more problems occur. It was centered around one problem, but it didn't suffocate the whole book, there was room for other implications, complications, and issues to arise. Also, towards the end, you discover things (even though you discover them before Violet does), that are so shocking that you just want to know WHY but you never get to that since the book ends. WHICH IS WHY I NEED to get my hands on the second book! which I can not wait to see its cover, if it is as gorgeous as the first one, then I'm a happy reader/book cover lover.

Violet Eden is a character I connected with on many levels, and she's also one I at times got frustrated with. I liked that she's a character who's flawed, struggles with seeing the truth vs seeing what she sometimes wants to see, makes mistakes, is strong and she's someone who's not afraid of taking chances. I love that she's someone who ultimately isn't afraid to make sacrifices, especially when it comes to saving those she loves. She definitely has some tough choices when it comes to love and following her heart.

The romance in this book is HOT! Let just say wow! I adored Lincoln from the moment he's introduced into the story. He's not the perfect guy, which is a huge reason why I love him, but boy does he love and respect Violet and that was enough to hook me. He's one of those extremely patient guys, even when you don't want him to be. If you've read the book you'll know what I mean. He's extremely understanding, loyal, but he's also secretive. He does reveal some of his secrets in Embrace which of course does have some horrible consequences, but I having a feeling there's a lot more he's hiding. I love the friendship and chemistry he and Violet have. That scene between the two of them on her birthday is AWESOME!!

Then there's Phoenix. Seriously, this guy is bad and mysterious, and yet there's something about him that is alluring. He does some things (a lot of things) that just peeve me off. I started out wondering what Violet even saw in him, but then there were parts of the story I was giving him the benefit out of the doubt and I wanted him to be better than he was. Ultimately he shows his true colors though I'm sure we've only gotten to know a tiny bit of the real Phoenix in this book. Kudos to Jessica for writing both of these love interests the way she did. There's so much about them that's revealed and yet there's so much more that I'm hoping I'll found out about them in the sequel.

Jessica does such a great job at creating scenes in this book that grabbed me emotionally. She allowed me to understand and sympathize with her characters, sigh with them, get mad at them and be happy for them. I love it when an author allows me to connect with their story on that level. There's a lot of twists that are unraveled by the end of this story and a lot of things that are also kept secret. I liked the way Jessica wrapped everything up at the end of the book and still left plenty for me to wonder about. I'm extremely curious about what will happen with the guys and Violet in ENTICE. So many choices that were made in this book I fear will have some serious consequences in the next book and the rest of the series to come.

This is a great read and one I really enjoyed. I like that it's part paranormal, part urban fantasy. If you're looking for a new YA series to pick up, I'd recommend picking up EMBRACE when it's out next month. There is some minor language and a couple tastefully written sensual scenes in this book.(less)

Very cliched, but also very addicting. I finished the story because of Phoenix... he was the only interesting character in the whole book.

This is another paranormal that suffers from what is known as MainCharacterItis. MainCharacterItis is an insufferable condition caused by receptors in the reader's brain that simply make it impossible for him or her to understand why anyone actually likes the main character.

I'm really not sure what to say about this book. There were moment I was really angry with Violet - she acted like a child, she made so many mistakes and the way she acted was very wrong. . And I just wanted to give the book 3 stars and be over with it, but in the next moment something happens and I change my mind again and in the end I don't really know what to think.

All of this is understandably a lot for a teenage girl to process. What makes it all the worse is that Violet's friend, the guy she is pretty much in love with, Lincoln, is also a Grigori. He trained with her, spent practically every day with her, and never once let on that he knew who she really was. The betrayal makes Violet start spending time with her new friend Phoenix. He's one of the fallen angels, but he seems trustworthy. Phoenix actually tells Violet about herself and the whole Grigori situation, unlike Lincoln.

Meanwhile, the fallen angels have been working together to kill the Grigori. Violet didn't want to become a Grigori, but then Lincoln is injured. The only way to save him is for her to embrace, which is the angel transformation process and the title. I liked Embrace, but I expected it to be more. Violet starts out all about Lincoln, then she spends most of the book with Phoenix and Lincoln barely shows up. I ended up really liking Phoenix but kind of forgetting why I was supposed to like Lincoln. I liked that Violet was a strong character, but I thought she was a little too driven by the men in her life. In her home life, she sometimes never sees her father for days at a time...could this be related?

Sorry to go so deep into my Teen read. Something just bugged me a bit about this book and I'm trying to work out what it is. It's got the typical paranormal romance formula: supernatural element + love triangle= bestseller. The Grigori parts were actually awesome. It reminds me a lot of Season 4 of Supernatural, but I loved Castiel and all that angel stuff. I think the love triangle stuff was what brought things down a bit. Like I said, she spends the majority of time with Phoenix when Lincoln is supposed to be her one true love, and he is barely part of most of the book. Couldn't he have held a boombox over his head or punch Phoenix, be proactive at all? Despite a valiant effort, Embrace wasn't quite able to sway me completely on angel books. Maybe next time will be better.

I'm not totally sure what I thought about this one. I liked it alright, but I feel like I didn't really understand everything that was going on. I understand angels. I understand Grigori, and I understand people. But do I understand their actions? No.

I think that's actually my only issue with this story-- I don't really understand it. For all the tiny details, I think I maybe missed a lot? Unfortunately, that basically sums up my feelings.
