apparently, the part of me that hates myself
Also appears on my blog, The YA Kitten! My copy was an ARC I received for review via Amazon Vine.
Books like Embrace make me wonder whether or not I hate myself.
Why else would I go into what I recognized as a risky book with high hopes and expect it to be good? I could only be setting myself up for disaster. Three-hundred sixty-nine pages later, sixty of those skipped and another one-hundred skimmed for the sake of my health, my hopes have been thrown into a bag of dog crap, set on fire, and lef...more

This is one of those books that as soon as I read the synopsis, I was instantly attracted to it. Mysterious tattoos, dream injuries, good vs evil battles - it definitely caught my attention. Sadly, I didn't fall love with it, but it's still a fun book full of plot twists that kept my attention throughout.
Violet is our main character, she's just learning that there's a whole world out there she didn't know existed, and she's right in the middle of it all. She is one of those characters that is e...more

Okay, I'm gonna go full on out with this book. Don't mean to hurt anyone's feelings but...this book was a waste of my time.
I was doing this:
the whole time.
Violet Eden, the main character, was a whiney, selfish, lust driven, and not to mention stupid girl. I face palmed myself so many times while reading. She does the stupidest things in this book, and she is so selfish it drives me mad. Okay, you don't have a life anymore. Your new life is killing exiled angels and keeping humanity safe with...more

I honestly had to stop re-reading Embrace just to start this review! It's the kind of book that catches your attention from page one and keeps it long even after the last page is turned. Make sure that you have lots of time when you start this because you won't be able to put it down!

After reading Embrace by Jessica Shirvington, there are two things that I've more or less decided to stay the hell away from:
First, ANGEL novels - with the exception of Angelfall series by Susan Ee and Daughter of Smoke and Bone series Laini Taylor.
Second, LOVE TRIANGLES. Jesus Murphy Jones, woman. You've read the synopsis. You know there were two guys mentioned that the MC is caught in the middle of and yet, you've went ahead and spent a hefty sum of money bringing these books from Australia!...more

I will always compare angel books to Hush, Hush. That's just a fact. And while this book isn't as kick-ass as Hush, Hush, it's still special in it's own way.
I really liked the different angel spin Shirvington put on this story. I think it was a good idea, a good story line, and amazing writing. There were just a few things that weren't very good: Shirvington mentioned towards the end of the book that Violet was terrified o...more

You know that kind of book...the one when you start reading that book, you're immediately swept into the fantasy world created? The one where you're connecting with the characters - laughing and cringing and reacting with them? The one where you stay up too late reading, no matter what you have going on the next day, because you can't wait to find out where the story is going? OMG OMG OMG! This book blew me away and all other angel books out of my mind, well maybe not my Hush, Hush but close. This author wrote an amazing book, it was mind blowing.
This book pulls you in from the beginning, makes you addicted and wanting more. It was kind of like a drug but in a good way. I tried to go to bed but all I could think about was this book and it only happened with two other series!!!!

I liked the writing and the mythology and Violet and Lincoln and Griffin.
I hated Phoenix and everything he did and said and was and that Violet didn't seem to realize that raped her. Both in mind and body. And this made me soooooooooooooooooooo angry. At the very LEAST he sexually assaulted her.
If she doesn't come to terms with the fact that he manipulated her every, single step of the way and have some actual emotional fall out from that in the next book, I might just burn them both.

Kicks Halo's arse...loved it!
I've been rather disappointed in most of the Angel books that have come my way recently - too slow, too insipid (seriously, I couldn't even read Halo without snorts of derision and finally gave up for the sake of my colleagues sanity) and too whiny.
EMBRACE was none of these - it's smart, intriguing, fast paced and thoroughly enjoyable. Violet is a character that is easy to root for - she is believable and strong and is essentially (besides the obvious) a teenager co...more

I must admit that I approached this book with some trepidation. I am sure that many readers can relate to the feeling of saturation when it comes to certain genres or themes. Therefore, when I learned that this novel was about angels, I performed a very large eye roll, and opened the pages....

This book is even better the second time around. Truly, an enticing beginning to what promises to be an amazing series!
This book is easily one to love. Violet Eden is a main character that is easy to connect with. Though she is quite frustrating at times, she accepts her flaws and pushing through them. She'll sacrifice nearly anything for those that she loves. But she's a bit impulsive, and at times you just want to whack her on the head and flail around in frustration because you know she's goi...more

This book was something that I consider to be a new spin on the angel/fallen angel sub-genre these days. I will admit that it took me a while to finish this book, but it was an interesting plot and storyline with interesting characters. Here are some things I liked and disliked about this book to justify why I gave it 3.5 stars on Goodreads.
Pros:
-Angels (gotta love them)--but also just focusing on angels and not religion-Refreshing to keep it not so controversial.

There were things I liked about this book. There were things that annoyed me about this book. And there were things that were so "meh" about this book that I just didn't care.
Overall, the "meh" won over.
I read this book in one sitting, but there were several times I almost put it down. It was only sheer force of determination to finish it that kept me from setting it aside--and I can almost guarantee I wouldn't have come back to it if I had. That said, it wasn't an awful book. Look I had great expectations when I stared to read this book. And with about 75 pages left in the book, I was extremely willing to give this 2 stars. The characters were great, well described and definable, the plot was interesting, loved its complexity and twists. However here was a list of things that I totally detested with just 75 pages left:
1) Violet only just met Phoenix for like at most one month and yet she still does "IT" with him!!! Like WTF!?!?!?!? Not a single girl...more

For me, Embrace was a book that while promising, failed to live up to the hype.
I was really intrigued by all the awesome hype and of course, the fact that this was originally published in Australia. For those of you not "in the know," Aussie YA = gold.
However, Embrace makes some really rookie mistakes and even some that just fail to make it stand out from other books in its genre. Disappearing parent syndrome, love triangles (although the...more

If you've been following the blog for a while you would know that I am known to have an odd relationship with paranormal novels, specifically angel books. Some angel novels I love to death, and others I can't seem to get through the full book. Now you're all wondering how I feel about Embrace? well it definitely is in the "I enjoyed it" pile! To break it down even more, I must say that I enjoyed the first half much more than the latter half. I went through the first half in ONE sitting, however...more

Embrace is an exciting new debut and the first book in what promises to be one enticing series. It's filled with romance, danger, a captivating angel-lore, and plenty of twists that will keep readers hooked to till the last page. Embrace is all the good stuff mixed into one outstanding YA paranormal romance: It's a fast-paced, action packed otherworldly page turner with a kick butt female protagonist and a heartbreaking love triangle. We were hooked from the start.

Violet Eden leads a seemingly normal life. Raised by her single-parent father after her mother died in childbirth, she now lives a wealthy, yet mostly quiet life. I'm really not sure what to say about this book. There were moment I was really angry with Violet - she acted like a child, she made so many mistakes and the way she acted was very wrong. . And I just wanted to give the book 3 stars and be over with it, but in the next moment something happens and I change my mind again and in the end I don't really know what to think.
There were moment when the character looked very fake - their reactions and the things they did.

Normally, I toss angel-based books to the curb. There's no real reason, it's just not something that interests me. I don't do angels and fairies (Though there are always exceptions). My only reasoning for grabbing the advanced copy of Embrace from the bookstore was because of the purple cover, and the description was intriguing.

I'm not totally sure what I thought about this one. I liked it alright, but I feel like I didn't really understand everything that was going on. I understand angels. I understand Grigori, and I understand people. But do I understand their actions? No.
I think that's actually my only issue with this story-- I don't really understand it. For all the tiny details, I think I maybe missed a lot? Unfortunately, that basically sums up my feelings.
