Now It's Funny: How I Survived Cancer, Divorce, and Other Looming Disasters is a modern hybrid, on one hand a page-turning medical thriller, and on the other a hilarious romp through the mind of a man bedazzled by fatherhood and midlife. What makes it so different from other "illness" memoirs is that it reads like a movie: in its frenetic pace, its intensity, and its impro ...more

However bad your life may appear at the moment, trust me - you've got nothing on Michael Solomon. To quote him quoting Gertrude Stein, "Death and taxes never come at a good time. The same can be said for cancer, terrorism and divorce."

Michael experienced all three simultaneously at the turn of the last decade. His father pesters him non-stop to get a colonoscopy because of a family history of colon cancer. The good news: he doesn't have colon cancer. The bad news: there appears to be "something"

You wouldn't think that someone who survived back-to-back bouts with cancer, followed by divorce, would be able to find any humor in the situation, but author/filmmaker Michael Solomon has done it, and done it very well. His blow-by-blow account of going through the rigors of the medical system are spot-on, but instead of a melodramatic "poor me" story, he's written a warm, often irreverent, humorous memoir of his experiences. Just to make his life complete, throw in a separation and eventual di ...more

Not mine actually...this is Kirkus Reviews:

One man’s funny, bittersweet memoir of physical and marital collapse and rebirth. When his doctors find a small smudge on one of 40-year-old TV production company owner Solomon’s lungs during a routine physical, they at first discount its significance. Even later, after other tests, they’re professionally circumspect: “They describe things in dimensions and locations, and from these various ellipses you have to draw the picture yourself.” The picture is

Having watched my father battle lung cancer, I was filled with certain trepidation when I got into the details of Mr. Solomon's story. Seems I can't get away from this awful illness. However, having said that, this is a different kind of cancer story. This is a survival story, a survival of all things gone wrong, and not giving up. To sum up Mr. Solomon's mindset; "Heroism on a daily basis is the hardest kind. Today I'm going to be a hero to myself; brave, focused and strong." This may be the wi ...more

When we think of someone with cancer, we tend to picture someone who is very sick and obviously suffering with intense physical pain. We definitely don’t imagine a fairly healthy looking guy who is able to work and live pretty normally. We don’t see Michael Solomon.

Michael had absolutely no sign that he had cancer. To please his family, he went in to check his colon. While that checked out fine, a chest x-ray showed a mass. Then, the hell began. Testing, worrying, surgery, then another round of

I got my copy from the giveaway today, and I've already finished reading it! It says a lot to me when I can devour a book basically in a single sitting.

If I had to choose one word to sum this book up, it would be "human" - the story it tells is so real and honest. I admire the author's ability to find humor even in life's toughest moments, and to show the importance of being able to laugh so that we may carry on even in circumstances that are so far from ideal. His descriptions of items, people

I won this book as a First Reads prize and was very excited to read it.

As a nurse I enjoyed the hilarious and accurate descriptions that the author uses for the various medical procedures that he underwent in his quest for an accurate diagnosis of his cancer. I think anyone faced with any of these procedures might appreciate the lighter side of the uncertain and scary task of navigating the choppy waters of hospitals, doctors, second opinions and health insurance.

While this book is probably bett

NOW it's Funny made me cry, laugh, smile, and count my blessings. Having helped a friend as she went through her cancer diagnosis, treatment and recovery, I do remember the scary times. Looking back and being able to laugh about various moments of this horrible time lets me know what a HUGE kick in the ass she gave her cancer. I'm so glad that Michael "kicked the big C", survived his other disasters, and lives a life of love and happiness.

Funny and insightful, Michael Solomon puts his fight against cancer out there in all its raw and funny glory.
