EDIT 14/06/11 : In a good mood so I'm going to up my rating! It deserves it if I'm being honest.

I needed to read a book exactly like this. I wanted funny, easy-going and sexy... I got it. I find there are times when I just want to escape all the classics, all the vampires, werewolves, fairies and whatever else we're trending with now in the supernatural world, and especially all the Diana Gabaldon (you know I love her really but 1,300 effing pages!). Before I picked up this book, I had reached t...more

When combining humor with romance, a good writer leaves you with a smile on your face. A great writer leaves you with a smile on your face AND a grin in your heart. That's just what "Practice Makes Perfect" by Julie James did for me. The characters are memorable, their interaction spicy yet still G-rated, and their happily ever after left me with a $#@t-eating grin on my face.

They couldn't be more different. He comes from money, her single-parent mother is a rights activist. He's a republican, s...more

I loved it! It's way better than the first book, Just The Sexiest Man Alive as I found myself fully invested emotionally in both protagonists. At one point, I did start finding the H&H's professional feud exasperating but as soon as I felt that, the relationship took a detour and I was rooting for both J.D. and Payton all the way to their satisfying HEA.

I found J.D. a much more attractive man than Ms James' previous hero but that's probably because I don't care for actors as romance hero mat...more

5+ stars – Contemporary Romance

WOW! I loved it, loved it, loved it!

Something About You and A Lot Like Love are two of my favorite contemporary romances and overall reads so far this year and made me an avid Julie James fan. This turned me into an outright rabid, crazed groupie who wants to follow Ms. James around like a puppy, fetch her lattes, shine her Jimmy Choos, and bond with her over martinis. Seriously, she writes some of the snappiest, most intelligently witty dialogue and snarkily cleve...more

Actually more between a 2.5 -3. Leaning more towards three stars.

Nowhere near as good as SOMETHING ABOUT YOU. I even considered giving it 2 stars at one point.
But it does have great banter.
I laughed. And since I really don't get to laugh enough - this one gets extra brownie points.
Sexual tension? Hmmm. Interesting but didn't blow my mind.
Oh, and our boy here was quite the sexist pig, which was quite infuriating at times.
But he did change halfway through. So yay?
And I might have a bit of a soft...more

As you can probably guess by the cover, Practice Makes Perfect is a romance novel. The first official romance genre novel I’ve ever read. The closest I got before was with sentimental, saccharine stuff like Nicholas Sparks, which, in the end, felt unrealistic and sickeningly sappy to me. The rest I owe to literary snobbery and my distaste of graphic sex scenes. So I stayed away, until I started hearing awesome things about Julie James from around the blogosphere, including from bloggers and frie...more

4.5 stars: Laugh out loud funny

This was an excellent romantic comedy in the he said vs. she said style. I loved the characters and the dialogue. It had some of the funniest scenes I've read recently in a book -- especially the embarrassing court scene with the thong. Only area for improvement was that it was a tad predictable. Sex scenes were mentioned, not graphic. All in all, a very good read!

I also loved Something About You by the same author.

Whew. I finally got around to reading this. And now that I’m done, I’m really, really sorry for not reading it sooner. Damn! Maybe it wasn’t as “funny” (I mean the LOL moments) as Just the Sexiest Man Alive, but it was still one of the best contemporary romances / romantic comedies I’ve read in last few years.

I loved Payton and J.D., and their mutual antics. Very kindergarten, if-he-pulls-your-braids-it-means-he-really-really-likes-you, extremely childish at times, somewhat over the top at momen...more

I don't know if it's because I was a Speech & Debate/JSA nerd, or that I grew up wanting to be Clair Huxtable, or maybe I just watched too many old movies when I was younger, but to me, chemistry is about everything that is unsaid when you're bantering back and forth. It's the passion and intelligence behind good conversation.

Julie James's Practice Makes Perfect has a lot of passion, a lot of intelligence, and a helluva lot of chemistry. It's a contemporary romance that feels like a throwbac...more

Okay, so to say that I really really liked it would be the understatement of the year because I swear by the Angel (Oops, don't mind my slip of tongue.. its Jace-mania from the Mortal Instrument series and which by the way does not, even a little bit, relate to the topic in hands but just a work of my wildly imaginative side. You must probably think I'm crazy. Oh, well.) that I absolutely, irrevocably loved it!

A really funny and sassy writing personality, I really loved the way the contemporary...more

Payton: “I think that you are an uptight, pony-owning, trickle-down-economics-loving, Scotch-on-the-rocks-drinking, my-wife-better-take-my-last-name sexist jerk!”

JD: “Well, at least I’m not a stubborn, button-pushing, Prius-driving, chip-on-your-shoulder-holding, ‘stay-at-home-mom’-is-the-eighth-dirty-word-thinking feminazi!”

„Not that it was a competition between them.

Practice Makes Perfect is my favorite of all Julie James's novels - and I've read all of them. Seriously, this is just perfect. Perfect. I can't remember the last time I gave an Adult Contemporary Romance novel a solid 5 Stars, but this story was just too good. It starts out as an office rivalry between Payton and J.D., both highly successful lawyers for whom there is only one promotion spot. Yet, what neither of these two expect is to start to fall for each other and from then on, its a battle...more

Letter to my Future Self
Dear Patricia,

I deleted the first paragraph again and again in the last ten minutes, because I have no idea how to start a review or post about Julie James' books. I hope that you do know how to do it and edit this post. Thanks. ; ) Darn you, Julie James and your fantastic books! They were all I needed when I read them for the first time (and the second, and the third) and they still are exactly what...more

Payton Kendall and J.D. Jameson are two associate lawyers who have worked in the same law firm for the last 8 years. Both are two hard working individuals who are fantastic at what they do. That is where the similarities end. Payton and J.D. have a healthy dose of competitiveness to their relationship and are always trying to out perform the other. Recently they have been assigned to the same case and will have to learn to work together. Not only that they are both up for partner and have been t...more

Payton Kendall & J.D. Jamison have been frenemies for the 8 years they've both put in at their law firm. They have this whole 'I love to hate you' thing going, which is entertaining. I mean, never in a million years would I suspect that they're secretly in love or something. As the last two remaining associates in their class, they've been assured they're both going to make partner. But wouldn't ya know it, the firm decides that only one of them can make partner & the other one will be s...more

Lately I've been really in the mood to read a lot of chick lit. Even though I'm still in the middle of 1984 by George Orwell and Orange is the New Black by Piper Kerman, I wanted to read something light and funny like I've Got Your Number. Plus, this book came to my possession after a friend gave me an ebook collection as a gift. All I had to do was transfer a copy to my phone and voila! I could go anywhere and have a book in my pocket. I have been looking for rec...more

4.50 stars - Contemporary Romance

I simply loved the book and the characters! Though this was James’s first book, I skipped it unintentionally and landed on her other reads which were fun as their own. ‘Practice Makes Perfect’ contains a very likable story plot with snarky, witty banters of two of its arch-rivals J.D. Jameson and Payton Kendall.

J.D is an arrogant superstar lawyer with a wealthy background and decent good-looks. Payton is an equally gifted lawyer with a tough outline of feminist m...more

Julie James never ceases to amaze me with her sarcasm in every book. Well, the fact that she was a lawyer may have a thing to with it but still. I love her way of writing, too bad she only has 2 books out and published.

Payton Kendall and J.D. Jameson. They have been working in the same firm for 8 years. Well, it's normal to work with people for that length of time but the problem doesn't lie there. They hate each other; And, when I said they had been co-workers for 8 years, I meant to say that t...more

Finally.

After eight long years of being co workers, that was in fact secretly in love with each other what can you say? These two have waited so long to be together, they had put in a helluva lot of effort to keep things between them purely platonic and that is by continuously competing with each other, to be ahead of the other for eight years, eight long years!!!

Okay, I've read Julie James' other book Just the Sexiest Man and I like it. like totally like it. hahaha.. Then I decided to check th...more

Probably more like a four and a half star read. Light-hearted, very entertaining read. My first by Ms. James and definitely not my last.

JD and Payton are both on track to make partner at the law firm they work for. They've had a sparring relationship for eight-years, since practically day one. Unfortunately the firm has decided that only one partnership will be offered that year. Each is eager to snag that offer.

Ms. James's characters are funny and very enjoyable; the story is paced well and hit...more

This book is about two lawyers who don't like each other, but who are both up for partner and have to compete for that one coveted spot. They've spent the last 8 years working themselves into the ground for this opportunity and things are about to change. First their boss wants them both to work together on a very important case. If that isn’t bad enough, now only one of them will be partner. But as things start to get more heated between Payton and J.D., they're finding it harder and harder to...more

Many of you may remember how much I raved about Just the Sexiest Man Alive, the debut release by Julie James. That novel made a wonderful splash into the pool of romance. And in her second release Practice Makes Perfect, Julie James gives the reader a veritable, delectable encore that leaves the reader quite satisfied.

Payton Kendall and J.D. Jameson are lawyers at a prestigious Chicago law firm. Both Payton and J.D. hav...more

This started out as a fun boy hates girl (but not really) screwballish comedy. I would have given it 3 or 3.5 stars if it wasn't for the final pages.

The lie the hero tells their boss is unconscionable. It's made clear this is a male dominated boy's club and the heroine is working herself to the bone for respect.

Detailed spoilers below, including why it upset me so much.

Behind closed doors, they're laying down the law.

When it comes to the laws of attraction...

Payton Kendall and J.D. Jameson are lawyers who know the meaning of objection. A feminist to the bone, Payton has fought hard to succeed in a profession dominated by men. Born wealthy, privileged, and cocky, J.D. has fought hard to ignore her. Face-to-face, they're perfectly civil. They have to be. For eight years they have kept a safe distance and tolerated each other as coworkers for one reason: to make...more

I am not usually a fan of love stories but this one is fantastic. It brings to mind a delightful movie and cast - You've Got Mail. Indeed this one would make a great film. Julie Jameson's romantic and funny, Practice Makes Perfect has solidly hooked me into romance as a genre. Anything that makes me laugh, think awwww how sweet and look kindly on the characters and their actions, has me not only hooked but landed!

The setting is a fast paced, high pressure law firm in Chicago. The characters are...more

I suppose one might classify this as a cheesy romance novel....after all, the cover is HORRIBLY cheesy. I almost didn't even pick it up because the cover was bad. However, I have read a number of good Austen rewrites that had covers that were just as bad (and some bad rewrites with beautiful covers), so I figured it was worth a try.

With that said, I truly enjoyed this story. And I don't know that I would call it an Austen adaptation. There were no Jane/Bingley or Wickham/Georgiana storylines, an...more

Holy shit!
