Sisterland tells the story of seventeen-year-old Hilly and her relationship with her family and friends with a backdrop of ideas about Jewishness and identity. A parallel subplot depicts the coming of age of Sarah, a German Jewish girl evacuated to Britain just before the Second World War.

Hilly's grandmother, nicknamed Heidigran, is coming to live with Hilly's family due to developing Alzheimer's. The things Heidigran says as her condition develops intrigue and confuse Hilly, who wants More...

Heidigran (grandma) is seperated from her family in Germany and sent to England so that she could be safe from the Nazi's. The rest of her family she believes to have died, until her grandaughter discovers that Heidi's sister Rachel is living in Israel. During this time the grandaughter also finds out that her ancestors are Jewish.....that grandmother kept this as well as other secrets.

Although the times are different the issues are somewhat the same because Hilly (the grandaughter) More...

I really liked this book it was really good from the start. I love how it switches off through modern and ww2 time in germany and england. I won't say anything more than that though. The ending was really unexpected the first time I read through it but it was overall really good. Though it did have a little bit of innappropriate stuff in it, it was still a super, super good book. it's about hilly and her grandmother who has alzheimers. hedigran is moving in with hilly and her family because she' More...

What if the grandmother you've always known isn't who you thought she was? Hilly's grandmother comes to live with her family when her Alzheimer's makes it impossible for her to live alone. But who are the people her Grandmother keeps talking about, and why is she so worried when the police come to the door? The story alternates between her grandmother's memories of World War II and the present day and Hilly's new friendship with a Palestinian man. Interesting parallels between racism during More...

I had to read this one with my YA reading group. There are just so many issues raised in this book (racism, romance, the holocaust, alzheimer's, sibling rivalry, the loss of virginity, marital breakdown, etc, etc, etc), that no one issue is given enough detail. Needless to say, I didn't enjoy it and neither did my young adults.

Nicely connects the past to the present. The Palestine/Israel connection was something new in a WWII book, though it did have the neo-nazi connection that seems to be in so many of these books. The personality changes were the most interesting part of this book, and the conclusion was very believable.

A novel for teenagers, carefully arranged around a selection of issues: xenophobia in general, antisemitism in particular, homophobia and teenage pregnancy are all examined. All laudably liberal, but the didactic content tends to overwhelms the story; I was rather bored, even though the cosy suburban setting and everygirl heroine should have hit home. But then, of course, I'm not in the target age-group.

I really don't know what to say about this book because it is so great. I didn't expect it to be all that good, but it was. It's written both during the second world war, and in present time, focusing around one girl and her grandmother who isn't who she says she is.

It's a wonderful book and almost anybody will get something out of it.
