I really liked this one. I quickly got swept into the story and had a hard time putting it down. I love the medieval setting and the plot and characters were really likable. Holy cow, there were a lot of very likable men in this one. I loved our hero Rafe, he was such a great leader. He is tough, smart, loyal and honorable. I really loved that about him, he was so honorable. He had been betrothed to Adele since he was twelve and made a vow then to be loyal only to her. I loved that he waited...more

I got this book off smashwords.com for free because of the code that the author provided me with.
This book was actually quite nice! I'll give it 3.75 stars
I found the prologue and the epilogue an amazing touch, it made the story seem like a fable or something. Actually, they were my favourite parts!
Now, there were a few problems with this book. I found at least ten punctuation mistakes, mainly missing out commas. There may have been more than comma mistakes, but I didn't catch them. This was no...more

I really like historical fiction, so I was excited to read The Promise by D.D Chant. It turned out to be a really good read :)
The Promise follows the story of two people, Adele and Rafe, who were betrothed to each other at a young age. Adele had been kept hidden away her whole life and when she turns eighteen, Rafe comes to get her. He fails to mention that he’s her fiancé and, instead lets her think that he's Finan, one of his good friends.

Again this is one of those books that I wish we could give half stars to. So here is how I will split it. I give the first half of the book 4 stars and the last half 5 stars.
I really was sucked into the story and I loved the characters. I felt like the first half of the book dragged a bit. It also just got to wordy at times. We would go pages with no one speaking. I felt like some of that could of been cut out and would of been even more enjoyable. I do however understand that when you are b...more

My Review:
Ah yes. This book was splendid indeed. The author: D.D. Chant is a remarkable writer, opening up with a Prologue of the character, Lady Quill writing a letter to the reader. I rarely see books that starts with that. Well done.
I do not really read Historical Fiction, but the author shows hard work and a lot of quality on making this an intriguing read. I spent most of my time reading this about seven times in the past few days, because the author herself made it s...more

This was definitely my kind of story, chivalrous men, impending war, romance, and strategies aplenty. The writing was rich and flowed smoothly didn't want to put it down. I loved the friendships of Lord Rafe, Finan, Leofric and Rand, their unwavering loyalty to each other was amazing. Each character was nicely fleshed out as well, you came to admire, hate, love, them all.

I chose to read this book as I do enjoy historical fiction and the author had contacted me for a review. I was intrigued by the summary and agreed to read for review.
This book is not a quick read in that the language is different because of the time period. It did prove to be a little difficult at times for me, as it definitely was not fluff. As soon as I got used to the language, it became a quicker read.

What if you had to marry someone you have never seen before? This situation wasn’t unusual when Lady Adele and Lord Rafe of Valrek lived. A time in which engagements were arranged before the kids were grown-ups. A time when honor, trust, alliances and friendship were all that matter.

First off, I would like to thank the author for giving me the opportunity to read this book for free. I was so excited going into the book, and was even more ecstatic when I actually began it.
This book was remarkable. D.D. Chant is a very talented writer; the Prologue of the novel drew me in instantly. I liked how it was a letter written by Lady Quill addressed to us, the readers; it was definitely a unique start.

I really enjoyed this historical romance novel! It was easy to read, the characters were interesting and I felt like I really knew them by the end. I didn't want to put the book down when I had to, and I loved the premise of the story. Two people betrothed and they have never even met! And when they do meet, one decides to 'trick' the other to see their true character! There was just the right balance of intrigue, danger and romance! If you like a good historical novel with a little bit of roman...more

One thing you should know about me is that I usually don’t do historical romance. Sure, historical action (which does not exist) is fine, but a whole book centered on romance is a little overboard for me. Yup, I have no patience reading a whole book about a girl and a guy falling in love in Saxon England. It just gets a bit boring! However, with The Promise, I was kind of proved wrong….

The Promise is a sweet romance, with bits of action and quipping wit. The characters were likeable. Each had their own voice and reason for acting the way they did. They were human, with strengths and weaknesses. I enjoyed how they spoke so properly, as befitting their station and the setting. I liked how the romance progressed between Rafe and Adele, from appraising observations to feeling something deeper stir within. It was a bit jarring to be in both of their heads at any given moment, with...more

Let me start by saying I love the olde worlde sort of setting so I was fairly sure I'd enjoy this book and enjoy it I did. The characters were all varied and interesting and I adored Adele.
The premise for the books plot was interesting, although I felt it resolved a little too quickly and easily for my liking. All the characters seemed a little too quick to forgive but it was only a small niggle. The book has a...more

Another masterpiece!!!
Okay, okay....so it's mine again, but can you blame a girl for trying???
The Promise is the first book in The Lady Quill series which tells the story of 5 foster brothers and how a single battle changes the course of their lives.
Pretty please give it a try???
I'll give you a brownie!!! :-D

I was disappointed with this in the end after reading some good reviews. The story never really amounted to anything and it was too confusing trying to keep up with which lord was which and how they were connected to the lead characters etc. I liked the Broken City by the author and was hoping for another well rounded love/adventure story but while this book started off well it just didnt feel finished.
