Service: A Navy SEAL at War
Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell returned from his star-crossed mission in Afghanistan with his bones shattered and his heart broken. So many had given their lives to save him-and he would have readily done the same for them. As he recuperated, he wondered why he and others, from America's founding to today, had been willing to sacrifice everything-including themselves-for the sa...more

I was so emotionally moved by this book...I found myself tearing up many a time, sometimes even sobbing trying to read through tears running down my face. The strongest emotions this book evoked in me are as follows:
1) I felt enormous amounts of pride, love and gratitude for the men and women who serve this country in our amazing military! The training they endure, the beating their bodies take, the undying support of their families, their humility amidst their courageous actions and the paltry...more

What is a hero?
Although he would deny that he is one, Marcus Luttrell is the living embodiment of that word. Luttrell is best known as the 'Sole Survivor' of Operation Redwing.
In his new book, Service: A Navy Seal at War , Marcus Luttrell recalls his return to the fight by going to Iraq after barely recovering from the events of Redwing.
As a man who is uniquely able to tell the story of the Navy SEALs in action, Luttrell opens up about life, death, and warfare among the finest of the Navy.

In my opinion Marcus Luttrell is a hero for the simple reason that he volunteered put on America's uniform and put himself in between our country and the bad guys. Beyond that, he signed up for one of the most grueling trainings known to man BUD/S; was attacked by the Taliban and blown halfway down a huge mountain; evaded certain death; worked to heal his body, mind, and soul; and THEN suited up to do it again! Words like brave and heroic do little to describe him and guys like him.

As a supervisor leading people, I struggle with how to get my staff to see how much better their work environment would be if they worked harder at serving each other rather than working selfishly towards selfish goals. This book details how working together, service to each other with like goals, is the better way. The sum of the parts is greater than the whole.

This was a book by the author of Lone Survivor, which is an amazing read. Marcus Luttrell, a Navy SEAL, survived an incredible battle in Afghanistan. In this book, he describes the honor and satisfaction he got from serving in the military. He describes the brotherhood he has with his Navy SEAL team brothers and in some detail, describes some of the life-threatening missions he served in. There was also a chapter written by some of the wives of his Navy SEAL team, which gives a unique perspectiv...more
Service is the second book written by Marcus Luttrell, the first being Lone Survivor about his tour in Afghanistan and the failed Operation Redwing. If you haven’t read that book I highly recommend it, it is very touch and inspiring what one man can survive. This book is a continuation of sorts. Marcus goes through and tells you what has gone on in his life since that mission (even goes back and explains in more detail his rescue.) You get more of a personal connection to Mr. Luttrell in this bo...more
A good book, continues where his other stopped at. He goes into more detail about his rescue talking about the men who came and got him. He also goes about the mission he went on after. It is amazing that he made it back, but he also talks abouts his struggles. What really got me was how he speaks of all of the different branches with respect, it is real there is no play with him he Honors all. That was great to read about. He also talk abouts the men and women who don't come home and the one's...more
A powerful story of service to our country. These elite warriors and patriots are willing to pay the ultimate sacrifice for our country and the freedoms we enjoy. This book puts you on the ground in Ramadi, Iraq to experience the danger, risks, tragedies, brotherhood and skills of our SEAL Teams.

This book was written better than Lone Survivor. LS was so tragic, this book is focused more on what being in the military is about. I felt like I got to know Marcus more in this book. He reflects on what happened in A-stan with with a different perspective. His grief is still very present, but less raw, as if he has healed a bit. I highly recommend both of his books.

"Lone Survivor" and "Service" both by Marcus Luttrell should be required reading for all Americans. Both books are valuable on several levels. First, the stories themselves will educate you and leave you in awe. Next, digging deeper, the books teach many valuable life lessons. Finally, you will ponder for long after you read these books, with gratitude, for the sacrifices that many are making on behalf of this great country. Your thoughts almost take you on a spiritual journey of deep reflectio...more
Overall, this book was worth reading for a military fan like me, but it wasn't one of my favorites. It's essentially a short story book, a format that I'm not really a fan of, in general. The author did try to tie together the stories, but it just didn't quite work for me. There was nothing motivating me to push to keep reading, so it took me a while to get through this. However, it was educational and interesting to learn about many of the other units that work with the SEALs. By far, my favori...more
Service: A Navy Seal at War, is a raw, emotional, and touching, continuation of Marcus Luttrell's "Lone Survivor" journey. If you haven't read "Lone Survivor", the book is a difficult, heartbreaking and amazing story of survival and should be read before "Service."
"Service", gives Luttrell the opportunity to fill in details not included in his previous book; the heroes who never stopped searching for him, the people who planned and executed his rescue. It describes his physical and emotional jou...more

This isn't one of those "been there, done that" books, although there are plenty of those stories. This is a memoir of sorts, but also a telling of the camaraderie that can only be found in groups that have shared life threatening scenarios, and survived to fight again. The author seems to go out of his way to make sure that all units who were involved are given their due and their sacrifices acknowledged, which doesn't happen in a lot of these books. It was an enjoyable book, and a good insight...more

For this Memorial Day weekend, Service, by former Navy Seal Marcus Luttrell was the perfect pairing. This book is a sequel of sorts to his first book, Lone Survivor. (outstanding!) This is another book I received while participating in Good Reads First Reads drawing. Thanks GR.
Service picks up following his intense experience in the middle east and tells the tales of his buddies as well as his story from his return trip to Afghanistan. Writing in detail, Service is a reminder of the men and wom...more
Marcus Luttrell was free with this book to provide more details of Operation Redwing. The book is so much more than that...it provides the reader with insight into the day-to-day life of warriors in Iraq, and Into the commitment and character of the finest men this nation has to offer. A compelling read, the title defines the work of its characters. Should be required reading by everyone in the Occupy Wall Street movement.
I'm glad I didn't buy this book, and thank you public library. I'll now return it to the Hostile Adolescents section, which is where it belongs. Unless you appreciate the glorification of war and the macho ravings of self-conscious warriors, I'd suggest you pass on this one. I would be interested in reading a serious study of the SEALs, but this isn't it. Now I need to wash my hands.
GK Chesterton 1.14.11 Illustrated London News: The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him. Harder to stay a Seal than become one, there is no education in 2nd kick of a mule, the enemy of my enemy is my friend, risks of injury near beginning and end of mission, Service, Camaraderie, others ahead of self.
The sacrifices are easy to overlook in the media circus and political BS surrounding the conflicts our military men and women are sent into. Our soldiers and servicemen are worthy of respect, worthy of our gratitude.

Marc Luttrell is an ex-Navy Seal who tells the stories of his wartime experience with special emphasis on the bravery he witnessed in Afghanistan and Iraq. The core idea of the book is the concept of service (hence the title), which means putting others needs before your own. Luttrell quotes the Bible to illustrate his point (John 15:13) “Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” (pg 351) His stories of military personnel and others as well, make it clear...more

"Fantastic, maybe a little better than Lone Survivor only because you read the maturity in his appreciation of combat on this one. Mr. Lutrell properly accepts the role of the SEALs and US combat forces moving from kicking ass and taking names to a more nuanced and supportive role. Supportive in helping the community become confident in the Americans and building up their own society by turning against Al Queda. He also pays tribute to some who sacrificed themselves for the cause. Great book !"
I don't know if I would say it was quite as good as his first book, but it was definitely worth reading. It was interesting hearing what happened to him after his rescue. As someone who has never served in the military, it was good to hear what our servicemen experience. I have a new appreciation for all SEALs and other members of the military.
I really liked this book. Having a husband and brother who served in the Navy, and a nephew currently serving, I appreciate the sacrifices they go through to keep our country the great place it is. I heard Marcus speak in San Diego in October 2010, and I just wish everyone was as patriotic as he is!
