Damage Control (Jonathan Grave, #4)
The hostages are young: a bus full of teenagers on a church mission. The ransom demands are explicit: deliver three million dollars—with zero involvement from law enforcement—or all captives will be executed. But rescue specialist Jonathan Grave doesn’t believe in ultimatums. For him and his elite team at Security Solutions, it’s all about protecting the innocent. Now Grav...more

A very short first chapter to light the fuse, then Blam! It’s a blast right into the action in the latest thriller by one who knows thrillers. “Damage Control” takes you full-force right away and doesn’t let go until the very last page. This one has enough full-bore action to take your breath away and barely giving you time to inhale.

“’You’ll have a whole life time to grieve. But ask yourself this: aren’t you living pretty intensely right now? I mean, if you take away the fear and the loss and the pain, can you think of any time in your life that has felt like a bigger adventure?’” (Page 152)

Damage Control
Jonathan Graves and his team had one objective and that was to rescue four adults and five students held captive on a school bus for five days. The captors demanded three million dollars and Jonathan was chosen to be “the bag man,” allowing them to take the money and free the hostages. But not every mission is successful and an unexpected twist would change the course of the mission and take many lives. A group of soldiers get in on the kill and the carnage is beyond devastating. As all the other raters have noted a real page turner. The amount of violence and carnage was very high. The plot points get really wild at times, but within the realms of plausibility if you can suspend disbelief (which is key in all of these type of novels), the plot can be pure escapist and fun, especially if you have just read a dense book that has taken quite a while to get through. Since this book was like the first I have read of this author, I am now going back to the original start of t...more
Not sure why I've never read the earlier books in Grave series, but I'll be looking them up after finishing Damage Control. Textbook thriller and I mean that in a good way. Terrific pace, intricate plot and gripping suspense. Grave and Boxers are a great combo - the humorous give and take between the two seemed a bit forced at times, given the gravity of the situation they were in - but they are strong, fun characters. The violence in the book is pretty graphic - might not be for everyone - but...more
I like John Gilstrap's writing. Damage Control is a real page-turner. While it resolves most of the questions/issues it raises along the way, this book, more than his prior ones, leaves a few threads loose at the end. It's possible that they'll just stay that way, as it's not necessary that we know an outcome for every piece of the story and character within it (in fact, for one character, never knowing more would make sense), but I really was left wanting more.
With that said, this was a fun rea...more

Maybe I'm too critical, haha, I am the Critical Critic, but when I see a mass market paperback, I frown. That's what I did when I received Damage Control in a Goodreads giveaway. I have promised myself that I would conduct a thorough, unbiased, review of every book that an a...more

Once again John Gilstrap demonstrates his command over pacing, suspense, tension, and really likable characters. Damage Control throws us into Digger and Boxer's lives again in a new hostage extraction adventure set in the hot sticky jungles of Mexico. The enemy this time--a drug lord AND a church! You can't ask for a better set-up than that. When a bus load of teenage missionaries is kidnapped for ransom, Digger and Boxer must go in and retrieve the kids and bring them to safety. Of course, it...more
The latest in the excellent Jonathan (Digger) Grave series, Gilstrap brings us a twisted, and all too believable, tale of political subterfuge and the power of money. Digger and his team go on what appears to be a routine hostage ransom exchange, but when everything that can go wrong does, Digger and Big Guy realize there's a lot more going on, and that none of it is routine. Another terrific thriller from Gilstrap. I love Jonathan Graves! And I couldn't put this one down.
Jonathan Grave (aka "Digger") owns a security company, but also runs a covert operation within it that protects the innocent. Using his not so nice family's money, he has perfected the covert side of the operation with his trusted team. Until, that is,they are hired to rescue a group of teen missionaries held for ransom in Mexico. The operation starts off bad and goes downhill from there until Jonathan realizes that there can be only one reason--someone with government credentials has known his...more
I thoroughly enjoyed this thriller. As always, I enjoyed spending time with the regular cast of characters - Grave, Boxers, Venice, Gail, Dom, and Wolverine - but Gilstrap does a terrific job creating his new characters in each book. I find myself wishing Grave would revisit them so we could see how they did once they got home, or at least to see him checking up on them surreptiously (which would be more his style).
Main character, Jonathan Grave, assignment is to rescue a students from Arizona kidnapped in Mexico. It moves along so quickly and is so interesting that before you know it you've read it all!!! That says a lot for a 400+ page book. I read the first Jonathan Grave book years ago and have the 2nd and 3rd on my Kindle but haven't read them. That's what I'll be reading on my trip next week!!
This is the first novel I have read by John Gilstrap. I was not disappointed. From the opening chapter to the final scene John is an expert on weaving great plots and separate scenes into a roller coaster thriller. I enjoyed his two main characters Jon and Boxers. If you like big guns and loud explosions, Damage Control will satisfy your greedy appetite. I highly recommend this novel.
This was a good thriller, full of twists and turns. Lots of bad guys, as well as good guys who are forced to do bad things to save innocents. I'm not usually big on the 'CIA, counter-terrorism, rescue-the-kidnapped' type of book. If you are, you'll probably really like this one. For me, it was good and distracted me for a few days, but not a great read.
I love me some Jon Grave. This book felt a little more relentless than the previous, and there was less back and forth between Grave and Boxers. I enjoy that back and forth, so it was missed, but understand why it was missing. But still another great novel in the Grave series and still looking forward to the next installment.

A little bit about my background... I've always been a closet-writer. As a kid, I lived for the opportunity to write short stories. I was the editor of my high school newspaper for a while (the Valor Dictus, Robinson High School, class of 1975), until I quit ("You can't fire me! I quit!") over a lofty First Amendment issue that seemed very important at the time. My goal, in fact, was to become a j...more
