Charon's Claw (Neverwinter #3)
In the 3rd book of the #4 New York Times best-selling Neverwinter Saga, Drizzt draws his swords once more to aid his friends. This is the best book in the Neverwinter Trilogy, but overall this set is not the best he has written. This is the only book in the trilogy that feels like Salvatore wanted to write it, as opposed to being asked to write. The first two feel like a commercial for the new campaign setting and MMO. Charon's Claw brings the story back to Drizzt (and his connection with characters we know... and Dark Elves), though Drizzt was a little too touchy-feely for this book.

Oh! Oh! Favorite quote, when it's in context: "Do you feel anything? Pain? A sense of impending doom?"
I realize it probably wasn't said just the way I heard it, but I bet it was damn close. And I had to actually close the book around my finger while I doubled over in laughter. Especially as it dragged on into lines like, "Are you dead yet?"
Lines like that got me back into the characters. Oh, not like I was at the height of the series for me, but getting there.

I’m torn on my feelings towards this book. It was an improvement on Neverwinter I think. It was fast paced and pulled me through, basically one adventure to another. But what I am really torn about is Salvatore’s change in Drizzt and the stories in general to a blurring of the lines or morality and becoming more mature in his themes. In the older books of the series it was obvious who was good and who was evil, and where right and wrong fell. Simplistic maybe, but I enjoyed the books for that re...more
Was it fun, Bob?
I sure hope it was. I hope it was fun for you, trying to ride the current fad for darker, grittier fantasy. I hope it was fun, following the edicts of the editors at WotC who told you that the world wanted one of the most beloved fantasy series of all time to jump genres into survival horror. Was it fun, Bob, killing all those characters? Did you watch the rising star of George R. R. Martin, and did you fret, did it bother you that this man was reaping the fame and money and adul...more

This book is, as expected, a straightforward, fast-paced adventure story with lots of action, and should be a fun read for any fan of this genre. But what I liked most about it is the unusual character development. The Drizzt-Entreri like-hate relationship is back. As usual, these two manage to bring out both the best and the worst in each other in fascinating ways. Then there are the added irritants of an evil mind-controlling sword and a potential sex triangle with an elf chick who likes to ki...more
I had really mixed feelings about this book. I loved it as much as I hated it!I LOVE the Drizzt books. But the change is some what difficult to deal with. In this book Drizzt is faced with moral decisions as well as challenges of the sword. He meets up with someone who he thought lost to the ages to him. And as the times change so does Drizzt have to change with them. There are no more companions of the hall, sadly. And the new romantic interest is someone so radically different from Catti-bre....more
Charon’s Claw takes Drizzt to new challenges as he tries to deal with all of the events that have been swirling through the Neverwinter Saga. The Thayan forces have been pushed back by the death of Sylora Salm. At the end of Neverwinter Dahlia learned that Herzgo Alegni was alive and in control of Neverwinter. She sets out for the city to claim her revenge on the warlord who murdered her family and raped her. Drizzt does not know the reason for Dahlia’s hatred, but he follows along reluctantly....more

I have to say that either there are some incongruencies with this trilogy, or someone made a big mistake in the jacket indicating this is the conclusion of the Neverwinter Saga. The Last Threshold is scheduled to come out on March 2013 toegther with the PC game Neverwinter, this series serving as a backstory for the PC game.

I'm a big fan of the Drizzt books. The Neverwinter Series, however, hasn't grabbed me as much as any of the previous books have. At the same time, I appreciate more of what Salvatore is trying to accomplish in showing the passing of time and new adventures for the long-lived Do'Urden.
Drizzt is too melancholoy (even for him) these days and there is nothing else from the other characters anymore to offset it. Some of this made sense - letting go of (no spoilers) certain aspects of his life at the...more

I thought that this was somewhat of a return to form for Salvatore, with a strong pace to the book, and an ending that tied up the story, but moved on to the next. (Spoilers) I really seem to be enjoying the continued inclusion of Artemis Entreri as a travelling companion to Drizzt, although I still am completely indifferent to Dahlia, who seems to be there only to fill the void left by the death of Catti Brie. Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see the implications of Entreri's professed ad...more
I'm always up for some Salvatore, his characters have such depth and more than a pinch of subtlety. I'll admit that this trilogy has been the most difficult to get through, which is understandable, considering the massive changes brought about by the 100 year jump that Forgotten Realms decided to take. But Salvatore has managed to turn this shattering of his usual cast of characters into a learning experience for the survivors, and therefore the readers. Whenever I read one of Drizzt's journal e...more
Charon's Claw is the next book in the Neverwinter saga of books. This new series of books is becoming known for one thing: It is Drizzt only. The Companions of the Hall are no more, now it is just Drizzt, Dahlia, and occasionally Artemis. The story in Charon's Claw very much goes down an expected path if the previous novels have been read. There are no major surprises in this book, unlike the first in the Neverwinter series.

Gauntlgrym. The place of Bruenors death, of pwent and supposedly jarlaxle and athrogrates deaths as well. A place of heartache for Drizzt, and now he must go back. Along with Artemis and Dahlia he they must throw Charon’s Claw into the primordial pit and destroy it, and thus destroying Artemis. It wont be easy however, Herzgo Alegni is still around and bent on reclaiming Dahlia and getting revenge on Artemis, and there are new players in the game, a host of Drow who seek the mighty forges of Gau...more
This third part to the Neverwinter trilogy was a blast.
As usual on many Salvatore books, the action takes a little long to build up, but when it starts it's non stop to the finish.
Here we are presented with many more complications to Drizzt's life. He is still hooked up with Dhalia and Entreri, but there are some pretty awesome plot twists to keep you page turning.
It has it all. Elves, dark elves, wizards, demons, fire creature, water creatures, unicorns and a whole deal of adventure!

This is the third in the Drizzt Neverwinter series. Fans will like the action scenes throughout the book. There is the introduction of new characters of whom I hope to read of again. They would be Effron, Ambergris, and Tiago Baenre. They represent interesting plot bunnies for future novels.
Drizzt and his new companions, Artemis Entreri and Dahlia, must be rid of Charon's Claw; the sword that enslaved Artemis Entreri for the last century. Even when the Sword is not in use it is dangerous.

another great book in the drizzt legend... since I'm lying at home sick, I managed to finish this book, too. I love drizzt, I love the series, salvatore knows well what he is doing. I enjoyed the second half of the book a lot and it was truly brilliant. I also don't have problems with drizzts moral code which to me has not been compromised, just maybe twisted by the grievous losses drizzt has gone through. still.. I cannot give five stars. maybe because salvatore became a tad predictable? maybe...more
I was definitely impressed. This was one of the first Salvatore books in a long time where he didn't hang on tropes of his work throughout the entire book. However, I did find a lot of inconsistencies; Especially concerning a particular love interest near the end. I was a little more than a little surprised and felt it came out of no where. The dual boss fights also were ill conceived. Both plots seemed to serve different storylines and rather than choose which one to use. He simply used them b...more
This was actually a solid 3.5
In recent years, I've gotten bored with the Drizzt series. The main character wasn't changing any, he was the same stoic do-gooder badass with the unshakable moral code. And one by one, the more interesting supporting characters were getting written out and/or killed off. It was time for Mr. Salvatore and I to part ways...

Fifteen months really is way too long to go without reading a Salvatore novel. I was admittedly harsh in my review of the last book in the series, Neverwinter; I felt that Salvatore was over-dependent on his (admittedly awesome) action scenes to the detriment of any actual character development in the story. I don't know if I was right or not, but that is definitely not the case here. His trademark action is present, but the character development on display is just brilliant, especially as it re...more
Each book in this series I enjoy more than the last. For some time, I'd been pining for the days of old. For some reason, I found myself missing Wulfgar most of all, and he the one longest left behind.
Now, Drizzt finds himself in a very unlikely trio. I didn't buy in at first, and as it played out, there were times when I was downright uncomfortable. But, in true Drizzt fashion, he blazes a high road with true strength. Honestly, calling it a high road is a great disservice. It is the path, the...more

I thought it was an interesting read. RA Salvatore never ceases to entertain me with his stories of Drizzt. Although, I do have to say I am a bit surprised at the end of this book. Almost.....disappointed. But it is still a good read especially if you are a Drizzt fan. The story has changed a lot from the Champions of the Hall time to a new and more confused Drizzt trying to find his way. I kind of miss the days when things were more black and white, as they like to refer to in this book, but I...more
Salvatore has produced an excellent conclusion to the Neverwinter trilogy. The character intrigue and development really carries this book, as they do in Salvatore's best work. The drama between Drizzt, Dahlia, Entreri, Alegni, and Effron resolves itself very well (though some loose ends do promise further plots). Salvatore does his usual good work with action and adventure, although, thankfully, he doesn't go on and on and on with excessive melee details (yes, too much action really does slow d...more

Typical Salvatore book which can be either good or bad depending on what you are looking for. Do not get me wrong, I enjoyed the read but if I had not been reading his book for over the last decade with Drizzt in it I do not think I would pick up a current one and be able to jump right in. Works great as a series when you are familiar with everyone and even the past people who do not show up in the book, not so great if you have never read any of the prior books and just try to jump in and read...more
Amazing! Truely one of R.A. Salvatore's greatest works. Although it started out a bit slow, it quickly picked up pace, turning this book into a thrill ride. It had me nervous and intriqued the whole time I read it. And of course, Salvatore being the way he is, left a bit of a cliff hanger at the end, with an interesting appearance of an interesting character.
I'm glad, Salvatore has created a masterpiece to redeem himself, because his last work, Neverwinter Wood, did not meet my expectations.

I always wait to pick up the next book in the Drizzt series. The last couple of books I have found to be a little lacking. I am not sure if it was just the transition of the characters but this book felt like it was a return to the good old days. I really felt the loss of the other characters but I felt like Drizzt was finally able to move on and start getting back into the groove of his adventures.
This is not the book to jump into the series but it is a wonderful continuation and I think ther...more

Bringing conclusion to the primary story arc from Neverwinter and opening new doors. Exciting action as typical of Salvatore and Drizzt questioning he role in a new way make for an excellent new Drizzt adventure. Also good to see some Drow house intrigue brought back, and the 4 or 5 threads woven into this story set great hooks in the forthcoming books. If you like Salvatore he continues his strong run of recent Drizzt stories here.
