In this book, it talks about a guy named Digger. He goes to Juvenile after doing a crime. On page 7 it said " Most nights, I'd lie in that hard bed for hours thinking back on the crime that put me and J.T. at Cliffside Youth detention center for nine months."( juvenile). This quote from the book states the fact that Digger did a crime that made him to go to juvenile. He escapes Juvenile to help his family. On page 126 it sa...more

So what do you know? The day after I wrote the review for Red Kayak, I was shelving at the Middle School and found THIS book, which is a sequel to Red Kayak. Just came out in November! What luck! I snatched it and read it all in one day. Yep. That's what happens when your boys go camping with Scouts and you're home alone for an evening.
This book was all about Digger. Digger has had a tough life. He's rough around the edges. He has a temper. He has a drunk of a dad who beats him and his mother s...more

I didn't read this before the first book "Red Kayak", but that was okay. Angry 14-year-old Digger runs away from his court appointed youth facility to "save" his mom and siblings from his drunk and abusive father. But he's really running away from something else - his role in the death of child, which is what sent him to juvie in the first place. I like Digger. He's angry, he's impulsive, he doesn't think about others, he doesn't think about consequences, but he really changes in this book. The...more

This book was terrific, and I'll definitely recommend it to my middle school students, especially boys (I'm a middle school librarian). Since I live in rural Northern Virginia, it was fun to read a book with a setting that was familiar. Priscilla Cummings did a fantasic job with Blindsided, and I didn't realize until I had finished The Journey Back, that she had written ths one as well. Both books, though very different, were researched amazingly well and the characters and plot were interesting...more
I decided to read this because I loved the first one so much (The Red Kayak). I was hoping it was going to be the continuing story of Brady. He was so captivating as a character. I hate it when authors try to capitalize on an earlier success rather than telling a story that needs to be told. This one just felt forced.
For some reason, the author chose the least likable and most static character in The Red Kayak to write about. This is the after story of Digger, or Michael, after he was convicted...more

This sequel to The Red Kayak is a readable reluctant reader boys book. Teens devour books that are windows to a life that they will probably never experience. Digger is in a juvenile detention facility for the crime that centered in The Red Kayak. He escapes and must cope with running from the police, finding shelter, food and money. As he fights to survive he learns a great deal about himself and several of life's lessons the hard way.
Enjoyed re-visiting the characters of The Red Kayak from a different point of view. I immediately connected with the main character. The story was satisfying and thought provoking. Our actions have long term ramifications. Cummings does an excellent job portraying a young man struggling to survive a troubled past.

THis was a good book that is about a boy Digger who is sentenced to a juvenile detention camp and eager to escape. Digger has a plan that sends him on a journey that is both a survival story and a lesson in trust. Anyone who likes thrilling books would like this.
