(Book read and reviewed for {Read It & Reap 68} in the Shut Up And Read group.)

This book deals with the story of Marty Boggs, who finds himself dragged to another town and another life after his mother disappeared and his grandfather suddenly fell comatose. While trying to settle down in his new life—not such an easy feat for a newcomer in a school where everybody already knows each other, and where a new face immediately attracts the unwanted attention of the school bully—Marty soon discove...more

To make matters worse, the bully's father is the principal of Marty's new school. Marty just wants to go back to his "normal" life.

Recommends it for: Horror lovers
Shelves: horror, mummy
This book was a joy to read. I am definately not a young adult and I throughly enjoyed it. It is a delight to read a book that keeps the scares coming withou having to resort to blood and gore as so many "horror" books do. I will be highly recommending this to the two young adult readers in my household and hope to see more titles by this author.

This book has it all: an imaginative plot, unforgettable characters and a likable hero. I was hooked from the first page- you will not want to put this book down! Highly recommend for teens and adults.

Marty Boggs... is a creative fantasy story... tactfully carrying its readers through the mysterious disappearance of Marty's mother, the terrors of the bully at his new school, his comatose grandfather archeologist, and the peculiar and seemingly valid questioning of whether the housekeeper is really human. Marty Boggs... is a humorous, evocative, and engaging story of the incredible mystery of the young Boggs' magical life. Marty Boggs...is to be given h...more

Picked this up as a Kindle freebie. I'm a sucker for the Egyptian mummy / tomb / curse theme anyway, a holdover obsession from John Dickson Carr, Agatha Christie, Elizabeth Peters and others. I knew it was a young adult novel and usually that would send me screaming from the room, but the protagonist was a fourteen-year old boy and that had promise. If the protagonist is a teenage girl, it's going to be nothing but Twilight-ish boy-crazy / romance garbage and I would rather yank out my toenails...more

Man don’t you hate when you really enjoy a book and then it leaves you with a cliff hanger. I need to know what happens next as in where is Marty’s mother and what happened to her. I really enjoyed this book. To me it had the right amount of magic, mystery and suspense. I loved that it did not just focus on the mystery of Marty’s Grandfather and the curse he supposedly unleashed onto the town but that it also told the story of Marty and how he adapted to life. I liked that the friendship develop...more

Marty's family is cursed. Grandpa is in a coma, mom went missing and Dad is bogged down with a crisis around every corner as he tries to set up a museum viewing party for a lost King of Egypt. The first chapter was great, there was a fair amount of action and mystery. The characters were likable and easy to identify with. The story line was good. The second to last chapter was like the first, very action packed and pulled most of the questions together nicely.
The bad news is, if I had been a tee...more

I received the book for free through Goodreads First Reads.

First of all, thankyou to M.T. Acquaire for sending me this book. Much appreciated :)
I was suprised to find how much I enjoyed this book as it was not the type of book that I would normally read. The storyline was interesting, though sometimes dragged a bit. The interaction and bonds that were formed between the characters seemed quite realistic and the dialogue flowed well. This book left me hanging at the end and so I am definitely loo...more

Wow! This book wasn't to my acquired taste exactly or nothing like I've normally read.

I don't think it'd be like something anyone has ever read.

It is very unique and special in its own way. Even if you didn't enjoy it it's one of those books that you'll always remember.

Really fast paced and never once boring.

The ending.. Well that was my favourite!
There is such a good cliff hanger!!

I'm giving this 3.5 instead of 3 just because f how it finished off.

I really enjoyed this story. At times it was a little slow and I was impatient for the story to get going. I dont like spoilers so I will just say that the ending left me determined to find the next book....right now.

Middle grade horror. It may be good for a very young middle grade reader, but there are gaps in the plot and is slow in places. It's no Harry Potter for sure.
