This is mature reading - gay sexual content. (Rick is my brother.) I love how fluent, how readable, Rick's use of words. His capturing these stories/conversations with the boys was from considering them to be very important ~ he would put off getting sleep to record them in print while they were fresh in his memories ~ and he had the gift to do that - he felt nearly verbatim.

Aging gay porn stars are fascinating. Once lionized by a culture that feasts on male beauty, what becomes of these cinematic fantasies after the cameras stop rolling and younger stars take over?

Sandford was featured in a few films from the late 70s and early 80s, and afterward was diagnosed with AIDS. During a writing workshop for those with the virus, he introduced a few chapters from his experiences living across the street from a Hassidic Boy's School. The boys were as intrigued More...

Ok, my 4 stars are biased, this book was written by my uncle. Still, it was a facinating read; facinating and disturbing.

I wish Rick were alive today. I'd love to hear what he thinks of this current world, and all the current movies which he loved to watch.

This is a very unusual book. It's good, but not at all what one would expect.

Interesting read. Knocked it out in a few days. What could, from the plot synopsis (gay ex-porn star lives across from Chassidic Yeshiva and befriends some of the devout religious boys who attend) be a predictable story of homosexuality and pedophilia turns on a dime into a gentle look at two disparate communities: gays and ultra-Orthodox Jews, and their seeming fascination with each other and their disdain for each other. Ultimately, it comes down to the age-old idea that we are more alike than More...

This is a vastly underrated book about the bizarre friendship that springs up between a gay porn star and the two teen boys that live nextdoor, and attend the conservative Yeshiva across the street. The mutual fascination each has regarding the other's minority status (the one's gayness, the other's Jewish Orthodoxy)is alternately comical and touching. Overlooked at its release, and overlooked today.
