After the Fade
by
Ronald Malfi
It was a typical evening at a local Annapolis tavern, until a girl walked in, collapsed and died.
The cause of her death was anything but natural. Something had latched itself to the base of her skull. Some type of creature unlike anything seen before.
And it didn't arrive alone.
Now, the patrons of The Fulcrum are trapped, held prisoner within the tavern's walls by monstrous...more

This was an awesome novella that took about an hour to read.
(I was able to borrow it from a fellow Kindler, which was nice.)
It's a mutant-creature type horror story which takes place in a bar.
To say anything else about the plot would spoil the story. If you think you might like this one by the description, I say give it a shot. You will probably love it.

A horror story that started deceptively (which I liked) a first person POV tale that appeared to be about a guy meeting his girlfriend at the bar to break up only to be disrupted by swarms of mutant bugs.
That's when I put down my Kindle, smirked, and thought, no, not again!
The whole several-people-trapped-inside a commercial or residential building (hotel, grocery store, bar, house, etc) threatened by some outside monster horror has been done so many times it's become a trope. Mutant bugs have b...more

I like Malfi's writing, for the most part, but regrettably, since reading his excellent novel, THE PASSENGER, I have found that his subsequent output has never really recaptured that magic, with the possible exception of SKULL BELLY.
AFTER THE FADE (AtF) is a brief novella that fails to hit the mark for me. Perhaps I am growing a little tired of these kinds of apocalyptic monster mashes, as I have seen very little that has been published recently in this vein that expands or varies this tired ge...more

What I really enjoy about Ronald Malfi's fiction is his sense of description of where the stories are taking place. He has an uncanny ability to put the reader in the middle of the story and the action.
In his latest book from DarkFuse, "After The Fade", the story takes place in The Fulcrum, a local watering hole. It is populated with a few employees, a few regulars and a couple out of towners.

A delightfully creepy little tale. Mostly set in one scene, focusing on a small group of people, Malfi builds the tension perfectly, both in the story line itself and among the characters trapped within it. One of my favorite things about Malfi's writing are his characters and the little tidbits he gives us about them, not necessarily important to the story, but always important to giving a dimension that character. He also talks to the reader without really talking *to* the reader, drawing them...more
I have liked everything that I have ever read by Ronald Malfi. He is becoming one of my new favorite writers. I also recommend another novella---Borealis. In fact, the only reason I gave it 4.5 instead of 5 stars was that I liked Borealis even better.
Very good old school type of horror story. Straight forward action that moves crisply to a dark resolution. Icky, nasty bugs doing terrible things to people. Good characters just trying to survive yet acting in believable fashion. Great ending that...more

I really didn't like the ending. It a bit derivative of an other exceedingly famous horror novella, but with a different ending I might have given this novella 3 1/2 stars, maybe 4 depending. Mild spoiler: (view spoiler)
