Kathleen A. Shoesmith is an obscure gothic romance novelist of the 60's and 70s who just so happened to write one of my favorite gothic historical romances ever, Jack o'Lantern. Jack charmed me. it's one of the few I've reread since my romance novel heydey in college. And ever since then I've been trying to track down elusive copies of Shoesmith's remaining works. The book was good, but the characters were so irksome that I am only going to classify it as OK.

Joanna was the worst. She was super-nosy, like Jessica Fletcher nosy. Nosy people are fine sometimes, but not in this case. She was constantly doing things to endanger herself and then acting surprised when she was in danger.

The romance aspect was SUPER queasy. I hate when they take it too far. I'm sick of people falling in love one second after meeting somebody. I didn't like how Max declared that Jo
