Safeword Matte (Safeword #3)
by
Candace Blevins (Goodreads Author)
Matte, pronounced mah-tay, is the word used in some forms of martial arts to stop a fight. It’s the Japanese word for stop or wait. Sam (short for Samantha) has made a hobby out of learning the various fighting disciplines, but she also happens to be a sexual submissive. What better safeword than matte?

I've been eagerly anticipating this book since reading SAFEWORD: RAINBOW last year (best predicament bondage scene, ever!). When it comes to S&M love stories, Candace Blevins knows her stuff. Her latest SAFEWORD: MATTE hits *all* the right buttons for my inner masochist. It gives a positive portrayal of a safe, sane and consensual S&M relationship. Yes, there are "loving sadists," and the book's hero, Ethan, is a swoon-worthy example.

Have you ever read a story and have a specific song run through your head while reading it? In the latest installment from the talented Ms. Blevins, I had one song running through my head. How does that song by the Judybats go? Here are the lyrics in the song, which summarize this story for me so very well.
"Pain makes you beautiful
I give you what you want, the pain and the pleasure
No sorrow tied
Tied to my hurting you
We delight in every torture I put you through
How did we find this place

Really enjoyed it! I didn't care as much for the second Safeword book but the first one
was also great to me.
Pretty heavy pain (no sugar kink here!) but I found it believable. LOTS of negotiation and communication. It wasn't long but, by the end I really felt like they had earned their HEA and it felt real. Heavy Dom -- but caring and sensitive. This reinforced for me I am FAR more masochist than submissive. I just cannot get into orgasm denial and things like preventing speaking. But again I'...more

There's plenty of thorough reviews out there on this one so I'm not going to go into too much depth here.
Things I liked
• Ethan's attentiveness
• Sam's strong personality
• Their communication & negotiation in all things, not just scenes
• The premise of martial arts/sparring
• The accessibility of the story in general that it's just 2 people meeting & falling for each other without extraneous fluff or manufactured drama
• Explanation & details given within each scene

Wow!
I feel like that is understating the book. I might have had a perpetual orgasm while reading this book. Lord knows that it reminds me of my husband and I testing my pain thresholds, and gave us knew ideas on how to push limits. (In a safe, controlled environment.) Every inch of this book moved me, made me feel wicked and naughty. My heart was pounding and I think I feel in so much lust with, Ethan.

For those of you that know me... and those that don't this is my little statement about short books.... I do not judge short stories on the rush of their relationships, because they are just that - short stories. So, yes the relationships always could have been drawn out more, yea it seems like they fall in love to fast and of course the story could have been made longer... but it is a short story. So with that said.... here is my review..

I found Safeword Matte is be a quick read, but surprisingly not erotic to me. I didn't notice clunky writing or typos so it obviously flowed well for me.
I liked the writing style, the characters were fine but I wished we got more insight as to why they were into more extreme BDSM. Despite the sex scenes being a bit adventurous, they didn't turn me on in the slightest which I absolutely did not expect. I think it was all the safety talk and confirming what was going to happen and what they agreed...more

This was a new sort of book for me. Not to say I haven't read BDSM before, but Safeword: Matte is a whole new world. No fun and games, this is series sadism, masochism. I learned a lot from this novel. It's not all about hurting or being hurt, it's about a different kind of pleasure. I felt very enlightened at the end of this story. I learned a lot about the BDSM scene afterwards.

I very much enjoyed this book. Loved the characters, loved the tone, respected the author's treatment of BDSM, particularly sadism and masochism. So often sadists are portrayed as icky and evil or damaged somehow, but Ethan is 100% wonderful AND sadistic. I like that this author shows us the two don't have to be mutually exclusive. The same with Sam, the heroine. She's strong and yet chooses to submit, without shame or doubt. I love that this book avoids pigeonholing and typecasting characters b...more
Safeword: matte caught my attention right away. The heroine, Sam, is a part of the fighting scene and could likely take most of the men she spars with. She’s also very intelligent and kind, a divorce lawyer with a heart – what a fabulously inventive concept! ;0 Anyway, Sam needs a Dom who she can’t beat in a fight; someone she feels is more powerful than she so she can feel truly controlled. But the men in the fighting scene aren’t necessarily into the bdsm scene and therein lay her problem. Fru...more
Samantha is champion fighter who keeps her body at the top of the game. A successful divorce attorney, she can’t let the local community find out she is a sexual submissive without losing her credibility. After dating fighters, she realizes she won’t find what she needs in the way of kink, bit still needs a partner who can fight her and win her submission.

I gave Safeword: Matte 3 stars. It was a good book, a quick read. The writing was good and the story flowed well.
The BDSM scenes were very well written. I thought that Candace Blevins did a great job representing a healthy scene interaction - the negotiation, the D/s and SM interaction within the scene itself was all done well. I really liked that Ethan was a Sadist and that there was no stigma attached to it here. In many of the books I've read, SM is treated with kind of iffy attitude, often...more

This story was intense. Repeat INTENSE. Hot. Sexy. Educational. Left me feeling exhausted and happy. BDSM between trained martial art professionals should be in a special category all by itself. A must read for all BDSM enthusiasts. It was for April cover challenge and I could not wait. I put it in my category 5 for intensity(highest).
I was completely blown away by Sam and Ethan. Seriously, I was not expecting their story to go the way that it did. Safeword: Matte is definitely one to read if you enjoy BDSM stories!
First we meet Samantha. And you know, at first I didn’t really like her. I felt like she had “issues”. To start, she describes her sexual preferences as “warped and twisted” and she seemed to have a thing about people being grown up. It kind of irked me. This was a short story and somewhat enjoyable, the problem I had with it is the lack of emotion. I love when a book can take me on an emotional rollercoaster, I understand it’s more difficult in a novella but I still need some emotion.
The heroine in this book is an attorney and her profession seems to affect her personal life. The couple negotiates everything, which I guess some people like because there is no misunderstanding. I didn’t, because it’s sucks the spontaneity and emotion out of ever...more

I was super excited to read this book. BDSM romance, LOVE IT! Mixed martial arts hero AND heroine, LOVE IT! However, the execution of this book wasn’t where I had hoped it would be, instead I found myself both loving and hating this book.
Sam is desperate to find someone who can dominate her. She is a world-class fighting champion, and stronger than most men. She wants someone who can prove to be stronger than her, can take he...more

This needed a massive edit, some sentences made no sense and I didn’t have a clue as to what the author was trying to convey. Then there’s name dropping with no explanation as to who those people are. Tom and Zee are mentioned without any explanations or backgrounds. The scenes are bare, meaning no surrounding details and very choppy. There’s also a very rush feeling to every scene or maybe that’s because they’re no details, either way it’s no...more

Wow what a roller coaster of emotions in one book! I have always been intrigued by the inner workings of D/s relationships, and this book really gives a curious person an insight into that. It even touches base on some aspects that some might find a little too hardcore for them.

A well-written novella about a woman finding a partner who understands her need to sexually submit and receive pain.
The characters are nicely developed and I really appreciated the non-cliche aspect of the martial arts theme. This was a very nice idea and Ms Blevins clearly has an understanding of the sport that lent itself to engaging me deeply with the story.

I really liked this book. The relationship between Sam and Ethan was very believable even though I wasn't personally comfortable with the type of relationship they had. The level of S/m was similar to that in Safeword: Rainbow, yet I did not feel that either partner was being pushed or manipulated to take more than they wanted. Also, although the book could easily have been longer, the plot was more tightly written than in Rainbow. It is times like this I really wished we had half points availab...more
I would give this 3.5 stars if I could. I liked the couple, I liked the story, I liked the scenes, I thought the writing was good. The girl kinda bugged me a little at times. I don't like when the heroine makes a big deal out of things and really she didn't in this book but there were times when she would say "we need to have a discussion about this" and I felt that a discussion was overboard. And we had to have the whole "oh my, I don't think that is going to fit" discussion which drives me CRA...more

Oh why, oh why can good books not be longer. I am so fed up of enjoying a story and the characters for the damn book to finish.
I was this close to falling for Ethan, a bit more in depth character building would have been great. I wanted a Kristen Ashley length book with those bits and pieces, details that make you fall head over heels. Ethan had that nearly and despite my moans I did enjoy the book.
