Recommends it for: Christie and Poirot lovers
" Poirot had a good opinion of Japp's abilities, though deploring his lamentable lack of method, but I, for my part, considered that the detective's highest talent lay in the gentle art of seeking favours under the guise of conferring them ! "
---- musings of Captain Hastings in 'the affair at the victory ball'

Well that sums it up nicely, doesn't it ? With the neat little revelation that it is Captain Hastings actually who detests Japp more than Poirot, apparently.

And by the way, 'Poirot's ear

A book to keep at the cabin or to read on vacation. You wont mind if your flight is delayed for twenty minutes because it will give you time enough to read another story. I was struck at how closely modeled these mysteries were on the Sherlock Holmes stories that appeared in the Strand - a fact Christie herself winks at throughout. Good fun with only a few politically incorrect statements to make the 21st century reader squirm a bit, and these are invariably spoken by the unlikable characters an ...more

I like that this book was written in first person from the point of view of Hastings, Poirot's assistant and friend. Can you top the queen of mystery? Good read.

1974; a nice collection of some now very familar stories (from TV) mixed with several that were previously very difficult to find, having been published in book form either only in the UK or in the US but not both. All were previously published in magazines (from 1923 through 1936) and most of the stories were filmed early in the series with David Suchet as Poirot. Contains:

The Affair of the Victory Ball
— harlequinade and murder; a bit better than filmed version although that was very good

A lovely collection of Poirot short stories – published in periodicals early in Christie’s career – which provided much of the grist for the early episodes of "Agatha Christie’s Poirot".

Aided by Hastings, Inspector Japp and the sublime Miss Lemon, Poirot investigates a vast array of cases including murder, kidnapping, theft, espionage and extortion. Hercule Poirot isn’t best represented by his short stories, but there are quite a few clever tales in this collection, and indeed the book is immens

Very nice, reading this isn't like going to Grandma's and checking out her antique doilies, but it's also not like driving Granddad's cherry '65 Mustang. This is the origin of mystery. The beginning of CSI, Law & Order, heck Perry Mason. Though I have to say that in Poirot, you can see the beginnings of Criminal Minds and Mentalist.
Dame Agatha, through Poirot, does have a great number of stories that fall into the standard, clue-clue-clue-solve template, but while Poirot does worship at the

This collection illustrates very well what is meant by the term "a cozy mystery." The stories in this book are like little puzzles, and they are a pleasure to read. Poirot is strong here, exercising his "little grey cells." I found it interesting that there are a couple of stories where Captain Hastings is not present. In the last story, we meet Poirot's secretary, Miss Lemon, who is passionate about filing systems but not so much about human interaction. The collection featured a story I had re ...more

Poirot's Early Cases is a collection of 18 short stories that show Hercule Poirot in all sorts of different mysteries. Especially well written where “The Affair at the Victory Ball”, “The Submarine Plans” and “The Cornish Mystery”. All those stories are adapted in the television series with David Suchet. Some are better in the book, some are better in the television series like “The King of Clubs”, “The Third Floor Flat” or “The Veiled Lady”.

One benefit of those short stories is that you can rea

I normally don't enjoy short stories, however, this book felt somehow different to all the others I read and I enjoyed most of the stories.

I think some of them would be even better if they were a bit longer, like The Adventure of Jonnhie Waverly and The Veiled Lady. Others were perfect the way they were and managed to keep me holding on and surprise me with the ending even with just a few pages, such as Problem at Sea.

Most of them I already knew from the David Suchet's movies, which are so good

Agatha Christie's short stories are usually very easy to digest and the eighteen of them in this book is no exception. As hinted by in the review, this is early stories, and combined with being short stories mean that they lack in depth. On the other hand they are each interesting small and amusing puzzles so I don't miss the depth at all.

A nice book to have by the bed, for consumption one short story at a time.

These stories are a lot shorter than Sherlock Holmes mysteries and far too easy for the reader to solve in advance of the ending. Initially, Poirot struck me as a narcissistic, preening little frog whose only merit lay in his humor...but by the end of the book there was something quite endearing about him. Ultimately a good read, but my heart will always belong to Sherlock Holmes!

A great collection

In The Veiled Lady Poirot is a bit bored with the lack of interesting cases that comes his way when a mysterious lady rings his doorbell. This adventure transforms our hero into a burglar and delivers a reasonable, although a bit farfetched conclusion to an amusing mystery.

Nothing is what it seems in The Lost Mine, where Poirot gets involved in solving the mysterious dissapearance of the Chinese businessman Wu Ling. Itï¿s quite amusing when Poirot visits the opium den, but I ne

Captain Hastings compiled 18 great (in his opinion) cases of Hercule Poirot from the early years into a book, with the stories vary from murder, robbery, suicide attempt, kidnapping and so on.

17 stories show the greatness and the invincibility of Hercule Poirot to the point that even criminals beg for his help, while one particular story (to my amazement) reveals Poirot's failure in the past (mentioned in Peril at End House)

You may notice 2 familiar stories in this book. The Plymouth Express (st

I was unaware that I have read all the stories in different collections of short stories. They are:
"Poirot Investigates" "The Regatta Mystery and Other Stories" "Three Blind Mice and Other Stories"
"The Under Dog and Other Stories" and finally, "Double Sin and Other Stories"

I love it when David Suchet and Hugh Fraser read Poirot novels, their lovely RP accents distract you from the racist and utterly unpleasant tone much of Agatha Christie's work has. I like Poirot, even though the stories are convoluted, unbelievable and hinge on thin slivers of ridiculous chance. There's something gently comforting about a formula repeated endlessly. The kind of book that makes you say, "Mmmm, where are my slippers?"
