I have to confess, I began this book thinking it was going to be a fluffy romance novel with a drag queen best friend as the only twist. In fact I read the first chapter while I was on vacation in Mexico last month, put it aside, and didn’t pick it up again until the end of June. I’m glad I returned to it, though, because while there are elements of fluff in the novel, the reality is that it addresses some ripped-from-the-headlines issues, like when to pull the plug on a comatose patient (how od...more

Bookended by Beauty Queens byVictoria Marshal

Oh I many opinions on the book Bookended by Beauty Queens by Victoria Marshal. I was reading the story of Angie Palmer I thought this was going to be one of those books where you have a whiney middle child complaining that they can't do this like the oldest one does and the baby of the family gets their way all the time, boy was I wrong. Angie was overshadowed by two sisters who were beauty queens but she was the smart one in the family the one that w...more

Bookended by Beauty Queens by Victoria Marshal is a fast-paced, tension-filled read full of characters you will fall in love with despite yourself. Angie has a quick wit and a sharp sense of humor. She knows what she wants and yet life isn't coming through with any good options for her lately. Still, Angie is not the sort of person to become bitter. She's open-minded and tolerant and maybe even a bit too generous when it comes to forgiving her sisters their faults both petty and large. When her...more

"A journey rich in characters and emotion."

Can you imagine growing up sandwiched between beauty queen sisters? Angie learned to define herself by intelligence and toughness as the middle of three girls, especially since her older and younger sisters were beauty queens. But that’s just the beginning of the story.

Angie’s built a fence around her life, determined to keep out any entanglements. No men, no friends. Then her grandmother moves in after her home is devastated by a fire, she meets a drag...more

This book started off incredibly strong. There were a couple of laugh out loud scenes that really started the book off strong. Unfortunately, about 75 pages in, it became "drama central" with one melodramatic scene after another which seemed to be more of a prop up versus quality writing. Finally, the author came off with that typical religious judgemental ism..some of it to a real extreme that not only was it unbelievable, but it really came off with someone as an agenda. Therefore, it became a...more

This book was amazing its not what I had expected I thought it was going to be a total different story it was extremely better than what I had imagined it would've been about. Didn't expect anything sad in this book, even though I couldn't stop reading it I was in the verge of closing the book because I didn't think I could take what started happening after Howie's party. I was extremely appalled by the way the family of Val starts acting when he need them the most. Their actions were the worst...more

I have to say this isn't my usual reading fair, but sounded so interesting I couldn't pass it up.
Angie is the middle child, over shown by her beauty queen sisters. She's built up defenses to keep people at arms length. When a fire destroys her grandmother's apartment her life is turned upside down. She now has a housemate, and a drag-queen best friend. Angie struggles to make adjustments for the new situation life has thrown at her. When she finally thinks she has her life back on the right trac...more

I didn't really know what to expect when I started reading this book. I only read part of the summary on amazon and decided that the short strip I read gave me more than enough motivation to buy the book and read it. I was surprised with the results.

I honestly think this book is very unique in terms of characters and plot. The book starts off like an anti chick lit chick lit story. What I mean by this is that it’s the personal story of a woman with many comedic elements and extremes. It gives y...more

I got this book as part of the firstreads program.

This book was really cute, and fun to read. I'll admit that I was a little thrown by the concept of drag queens, but it turned out to make the book a lot more fun. As the synopses states, Angie takes in her grandmother after a fire ruins her apartment. It seems absurd that it took three days for her sisters to tell her that there was even a fire.

I liked that Angie was a book publisher because it's something that I would like to do (since I do lo...more

What a wonderful book, so full of everything. I laughed, I cried, I read it in one day! It kept me entertained the entire book. I know a lot of people are going to take this book and rake it over the coals because of it's controversial little tidbit( Gay Rights), but if you are a person who loves people and loves them for who they are not what they do, Then get this book right now and read it.
WONDERFUL!!!
