Note: This review is my opinion, and it is skewed to my likes and preferences.

I am rating this book 3.75 - 4 of 5.

Before I get into the review there is one thing I was totally disappoint with…the length of the book – it was too short, by the end I wanted more. I will read the next volume when it is released.

Pepper has crafted a good book, using a style that is hard to be successful with. Her use of the archaic language has turned some away, but I can only think that they are shallow readers...more

Disclaimer: The fact that the author has provided me a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review has not affected my rating. This review expresses my honest opinions.

Wow. Just wow.

I'm not sure what to say about Flag of Bones other than that it definitely exceeded my expectations. Before reading this book, the Disney cartoon version of Captain Hook or Jack Sparrow were my only two images of pirates.

That being said, it's probably pretty obvious that my view of pirates has...more

When I got hold of this novella, I was expecting a swashbuckling story about a pirate's adventure on sea, maybe not something of the magnitude of Pirates of the Caribbean, but at least with a story which I could relat...more

I want to thank the author for making it available to me in exchange for this review. Having said that . . .

Jalen Shenn is not the type of pirate you'd find on a Disneyworld ride. And that's a good thing. There's enough of the romanticized, swashbuckling pirate/treasure crap out there. There's something darker and more multifaceted about him that I like.

First, I like that he's a leader of men. For me, the burdens of leadership is a theme in the book, as is loyalty. Both great themes to write (...more

***** Some minor spoilery type things throughout, but I marked any major spoilers under tags *****

First thing's first - there are some really cool ideas in here and there are the makings of a pretty decent story. The world seems interesting, the characters, while not developed to a really large extent, are likable (or not, as the case may be), and the world seems like it could be pretty nifty if adequately developed.

That's the good s...more

I normally love pirate books and thought this one would be the same but as much as the plot flowed well I was often very confused. The whole book was written in first person of the pirate king Jalen Shenn and was therefore all in his style of speaking and it was just too different for me to be able to grasp what was going on.

On top of that I actually think it would have been better in something other than first person as it made it feel like I was just being told stuff all the time.

If the book h...more

This book was written from a pirate's point of view. With the Empire themselves being the bad guys. This book was also divided; You had land people and sea people. You had pirates and the empire. You had different gods and dragons.

A very well written book. I found the language a bit hard to understand and wished that maybe they had a glossary at the beginning. She used words like boards that ment ship, and bones ment the skull and cross bones of the pirate flags.

Overall though the story was good...more

I really like pirate books and this book had all the content I love in a good pirate story. It has the danger, codes to live by, love story, loyalty, betrayal and tge usual pirate fights. I did however, find the language at times, hard to understand, having to go back and reread a section, to ensure I understood what was going on in the story. I really like the poem at the begining of the book. What a unique way of starting out a book.

Captain Jalen Sheen of the Dragon Wynd, is a character, that...more

This book "Flag of Bones" by Elle Pepper has a good general story line that could be developed further. A ship captain, Jalem Shenn and crew of the Dragon Wynd escape hanging and are searching for Jalem's lost wife. All the while trying to escape the Empire. The basic story of pirates, codes of honor, loyality and betrayal are there, however they are lost in the languge used within the narration. This causes you to constantly be rereading passages to get the meaning. With more work this has the...more

I received Flag of Bones The Voyages of the Dragon Wynd by Elle Pepper as a R2R. And boy am I glad I signed up! First set your mind for some Pirate/Fantasy not your children stories. Immerse into the pirate language (sometimes confusing), the codes to be honored by all, good and evil. Follow Captain Jalen on his journey with his ship The Dragon Wynd and his crew. Captain Jalen is some what of a mix of races and I do not mean all human. Imagine if this rough pirate for some unknown reason were sa...more

I don't usually read this kind of fiction but since I got interested with it and the author was very kind enough to send me a free version, I set out to journey with this book. This is very fun! I love it! The characters are so interesting and full of life especially the plot. You will fall in love with each of them. The way it explored the life of pirates and seamen is very insightful for me for I usually do not care about them at all. =P I wish I could have this book in paperback in my hands s...more

Let me preface my short review with the fact that I was given Flag of Bones by the R2R program. Initially the summary of the book excited me as I do enjoy a good story about open water and pirates. It was not what I was expecting. The language was a bit difficult at times to grasp and I felt the first few chapters were confusing, although a reread would probably help clarify what exactly happened. The characters were semi-interesting as was their world. Are these pirates hundreds of years old? T...more

*I was given a free copy of this for an open and honest review.*

This story is very promising. The story is obviously the first in a series, but I do feel that this story could have been fleshed out a little. The ending felt a little abrupt. This is one of the first pirate books I have ever read, and it kept me entertained, but it left me wanting more. The end just seems like is a weird place to end, but that would also depend on what the context of the second book is.

I do think there could be a...more

Flag of Bones was given to me by the author to review and I feel that I’ve given it an honest review centred solely on my own opinion.

This book had so much promise and as I finished it I felt quite disappointed that it hadn’t lived up to my expectations at all. I was expecting a swashbuckling tale filled with adventure and excitement but was instead confronted with a disorganised narrative, jam packed with too much unexplained information, confusing language and characters who just weren’t fles...more

TheFlag of Bones The voyages of the Dragon Wynd (Book one: the shallows) was an intense, exciting, unique & almost baffling read.

There is sooo much potential in this book. The writing is beautiful. It has a lilting musical quality to it that makes it a pleasure to read. It also makes the layered meanings of the phrases believable. I really liked the way that a single phrase or gesture could have both a surface meaning and secondary meaning, enabling the speaker to relay two messages at once. It is a testament to Pepper that she is able to relay both meaning in an easily followable manner.

Pepper has obviously put a lot of...more

Having received a free copy of this from the author for review I would like to note that this has not biased my review in any way.

This book follows Jalen Shenn, a not so typical pirate, as he fights the Empire and tries to find his family as well as protecting himself, his crew and his ship. The book combines swash-buckling pirate adventure and a supernatural twist that does take a little getting used to but once you do it is well worth it. I did find some of the conversation a little stilted as...more

Ok, first and foremost thanks to Elle for providing me with a free copy of her book in return for an honest review.

I normally comment on grammar, spelling and other editing things, but given I had to convert the PDF version using Amazon's conversion process, the formatting and spacing was a bit whacked, so I will not make any comments on this.

The characters...well, I can't say that I know very much about any of them! I know some rather obscure items of knowledge, but I could not tell you anythin...more

Fantasy is not my preferred read, but once in a while, a book can be a fun read, like this story. I’ve always enjoyed a good buccaneer tale, like the old Errol Flynn flicks. Elle Pepper's "The Shallows" was a refreshing reminder of the adventures of the high seas and swashbucklers. It’s a good bold story of strong men. The characters are an interesting crews whether they be good, bad or ugly. I must admit sorting through the unusual names and the use of language kept me on my toes. There came a...more

I'm not really into books involving pirates, but since I've seen movies such as Pirates of the Caribbean and liked it, I decided to try this book. I received this for an honest review.

Well, what can I say? When I started FOB, I was often confused, I have to re-read everything to understand it. There are terms I didn't grasp well because a definition wasn't given in the beginning such as the "phaeon". I'm constantly torn between whether I should finish reading it or not. The plot was interesting...more

Flag of Bones is a well-written exciting pirate story. I thoroughly enjoyed the book although I was a little confused at times. One thing that I would suggest to the author is that not everyone who is reading the story is a sailor or familiar with pirate slang. Therefore some of the words that are used in the story should have been explained and not left the reader guessing as to what it meant. But all in all the author did a good job keeping the attention of the audience. I'm looking forward to...more

I received this free ebook in exchange for a review.

The Good:

Starting with a poem before the prologue was a unique beginning, always a plus in my book.

The world-building shows through clear in the prologue, and are threaded through neatly throughout the rest of the story. Clearly the Author's strongest part of writing.

The Bad:

The hook comes in too late to be effective from the get go, which might cause some readers to lose interest early on.

A lot of sentences start with "And", which is a joiner...more

Good, but could have been better. Interesting storyline but was not executed well. I didn't really like this authors writing style, so that is the main reason this book didnt get a better rating.

What a great little book. I have to admit that I was a little confused at first. I think the language threw me but once I got started and realized it was just like watching Star Trek and having someone speak in Klingon, I was ready to go. This little book has it all, an exciting pirate adventure, loyalty, deceit, redemption, love, fear, tyranny. What a delightful little read. I can't wait for the next installment to come out.

Elle Pepper is a thirty-something writer of fiction that classified by the author as 'experimental cross-genre' and she enjoys it. Her first real book, Flag of Bones is actually the first in a novella series.

"Growing up, I used to devour books. A few hours and the book would be read, and I'm one of those people who never lets a book go, to me, they are all old friends."
