Edit:
I've only read maybe 10% of this book but it feels very much like a wallpaper historical, if I were in the mood for a secret baby and a powerful rich hero I'd read a Harlequin Presents.

To be fair I didn't think I'd like it much and I really shouldn't have started it. I had already decided I wasn't a fan of Kendall's books and this would be the last I'd read. I may come back to it, but I doubt it.

Opinion before I read it:
Secret babies in historical novels are one thing, secret male, heir-lik...more

Runaway brides, secret babies, family secrets, blackmail and alcoholism. Those elements would make for enough drama for one story all by themselves. However, in An Heir of Deception by Beverly Kendall all of that is just backstory to the actual novel. In this case, it's the revelations and their aftermath that drive this story. And what a story it is!

Charlotte Rutherford abandoned Alex Hastings at the altar five years ago, and ran a...more

The past couple of days have been jam packed, while I have been trying to migrate north to Montana. During this time I had taken the task of reading An Heir of Deception by Beverly Kendall. I started reading it late on Thursday night and couldn't put it down. However, I knew that I must for we were traveling 10 hours north the next day. Got onto Montana Friday night and got half way through the book. Saturday I was determine to finish reading.

Starting with the prologue, we basically see Alex Ca...more

I enjoyed this book very much. I won it for free through Goodreads. The story is about Alex Cartwright, heir to the Duke of Hastings, and the love of his life, Charlotte. On their wedding day, without any explanation, Charlotte disappeared. Alex nearly destroyed himself in his grief, but five years later he has turned a new leaf and is ready to move on. Then, Charlotte reappears with the son he never knew about. Charlotte fled because she feared that a dark family secret would be exposed, but wi...more

I have been waiting so long for this book that I was afraid that I would be disappointed when I finally read it. Let me just say that it was just what I hoped and more! I am a sucker for couples reuniting and wow what a couple they were. Alex was so yummy that I found myself re-reading the sometimes angry, sometimes steamy things he said to Charlotte over and over again. At first I was more than a little upset with Charlotte, but as I read more of the story I could remember being 19 and acting b...more

This author definitely has a distinct writing style (character are always thinking about sex no matter what situation is going on, etc), but honestly, I enjoyed the entire series. I like the characters, I liked how she connected one book to another (it wasn't like some I've read where you end up with a previous character acting ridiculous because you know of their past pursuits - her repeat characters retained their personalities without trying to steal the limelight from main protagonists), and...more

This was, in my opinion, the best book in this series. Charlotte all grown up, and the lengths she went to to ensure her family's happiness despite her own unhappiness was amazing.

The third book in The Elusive Lords series by Bevereley Kendall does not disappoint! This book is self published and I wonder what was going through publisher's minds when they decided not to snap this book up!

After being jilted at the altar Alex Cartwright is finally over Charlotte. Well, almost over her. She disappeared on their wedding day five years ago and has returned from the colonies when she hears her twin is ill, bringing her son with her. Alex is surprised to discover the child's star...more

If you love historical romance, you'll love Beverley Kendall. An Heir of Deception was such an emotional read that I just couldn't put it down. I felt so emotionally connected to the characters that I just had to get to their HEA. This was a highly anticipated read for me and it did not disappoint.
This is not a lighthearted read. The emotions are strong, the conflict intense, and the love scenes steamy. I recommend this book to anyone who loves stories where the angst is heavy, but the payoff a...more

I've been eagerly awaiting the release of this book for over a year and I was really nervous that it wouldn't live up to my expectations. I needn't have worried because this book was so good, easily my favorite from this author. There was just so much angst and emotion that I just couldn't put the book down.

Alex Cartwright is a man scorned. After being left at the altar five years ago by the woman he loved, he has been living in a self made hell. He was distraught and in pain and the only way he...more

I enjoyed reading An Heir of Deception, part of Beverley Kendall's Elusive Lords series. A story well told with likeable characters.

Without giving spoilers, I was surprised when the writer of the letter that caused Charlotte to run away 5 years earlier was revealed. But I had a little problem with that. Charlotte finally told Alex and the rest of her family why she ran away. I was left with the impression that she was not previously aware of the information given her in the letter. That said, I...more

i really liked the premise of this with a secret child, runaway bride. overall the characters were rather annoying, and the reasons for their decisions absurd. i did like the interaction between the h/h, but felt they needlessly punished each other. some of the ways things get resolved seem completely regency wrong - i wouldn't recommend this for someone who wants/needs some accuracy.

This book had so much potential, I really liked the characters and angst. It was ruined by cliched writing, mainly during the love scenes. I also felt like their love was glossed over b/c they were always aroused...that was so dumb. Every sweet kiss turned sexual immediately. I rolled my eyes constantly. Also, his declaration of love was so downplayed. I was disappointed.

So as a fan of turn of the century bodice rippers, I found this to be more of a driving read than the other free download by the same author. Love lost, broken hearts, life reborn...only when everyone is older and with secrets around them. Well worth the read for fun if nothing else that a great battle between the sexes.

It is rare that you have two leading characters that have both been wronged and your heart goes out to both. Alex and Charlotte are meant to be, there is no two ways about it but she hurt him by trying to protect him. Leaving him at the alter, disappearing for years with no communication and returning with a child does not put her high on his list.
One of the most telling scenes for me was between James and Alex, it showed how much she hurt him. But it also showed how her decision effects not on...more

i like this book because i kinda love the type of story which the heroine does not telling the Hero that she is pregnant and all that crap,,pride, idiotic, stupidity, runaway bride...
And this is one of the good one from this genre...cliche but not cliche...

After months of waiting & anticipation, I finally know how this story unfolds. I loved this story. It's definitely a page-turner. I totally didn't expect some of the twists and turns in the story. I'm just fortunate I discovered this author last year, and since then I have bought all of her books. If you haven't read any of Beverley's books, you must pick one up; they will not disappoint!

Took me a little while to finish because I hate when characters keep going back and forth. Do they love each other or not? Than the "villain" turns out to be someone totally unexpected and everything is forgiven between the couple. For a long story, it wrapped up quickly.

An Heir of Deception may have aspects of a classical romance, but the raw emotion conveyed is beyond cookie cutter.

Alex and Charlotte had found true love. Then a threatening letter ripped them apart for years. Once Charlotte returns with Alex’s son he risks everything to claim his heir, not expecting to have his heart returned to life. To deceive the ton they must play the part of reconciled lovers, a difficult thing to fake. You are swept along as they work through the pain and take steps towa...more

Been waiting for Alex and Charlotte's story for awhile. The wait was worth it - very satisfying and with a few interesting twists. Hope that Catherine's story comes next.
