Saying good-bye to Mrs. Mark Edward Desmond and hello to the rest of her life took all the strength Rene could muster. A convoluted escape plan set up with the help of her brave sister got her out of the house and on the road with her two children, seven year-old Seth and his little sister Sara. Changing her life and getting away from the monster who terrified them all was her main goal. It took all her courage to ignore his whispered words of killing everyone she loved if she ever left him. She...more

Kindle freebie by a new-to-me-author. Romantic suspense with a domestic abuse and violence theme. Although there were many likable characters and a storyline that could have built into a well-formed story, this one just didn't. It lacked subtance and development that left this reader with too many questions.

On Ice is gripping from the beginning. Ever when the story lulls there's an undercurrent of suspense. The ending was unexpected but I wished it happened differently. This is one of the first books that I have read where the abusive husband's threat were this explicit.

Having just watched a movie about a stalker and the ineptness of police, this book because a very plausible tale of one woman's courage to no longer be a victim. I can say that I lost much sleep like other reviewers but what I can s...more

SHORT SUMMARY
Imagine leaving everything you ever knew behind. That’s exactly what Rene Desmond decided she must do to protect her family from her abusive husband, Mark. With the help of her sister, Rene changes their names and moves to Sad Horse, a small Alaskan town far away from Houston and their former life. Here, the town’s patriarch and most eligible bachelor, Brett, pursues Renee as she begins to find her place in the community.

I picked this up free for Kindle and I really enjoyed it. When we meet Rene she is running from an abusive husband along with her two young children. With the help of her sister, she sets out to make a new life for herself, but she lives in fear that he will find them and kill her. The point of view shifts to her sister Maddy and the psycho husband so we see what is going on back home, though Rene has no idea. There are many great characters, both in Alaska and back in Texas, that add a bit of f...more

I would like to give this more stars but I can't. I just loved this book. A story about a young woman who runs with her two children, with the aid of her sister, to Alaska to get away from her evil, abusive husband. She is taken in, welcomed and safe in a small town with wonderful small town people. I like how the author goes back and forth with the different scenes with the characters, until it all comes to a head. I was constantly on the edge of my seat with this book. It had the touching love...more

On Ice is an intriguing story full of interesting twists and turns that made my mind race. This gritty story keeps you glued to the pages wondering where this all would lead. Would this plan work or were these people doomed. The writing and storyline were so sharp that this adventure became very personal for me. I wanted good to prevail. I loved the natural dialog and the realness of the inviting (well some of them were inviting) characters. This was an easy story to get lost into and escape to...more

ON ICE 2*

****SPOILERS****

The premise - though often used - was good and the story started with tension. However, about halfway through it started to become unrealistic. Thankfully, I have no idea how abused woman whose children are also under threat reacts to the attentions of other men. However, I suspect that welcoming a man she barely knows into her life and that of her children is not something a woman in this situation would do.

Tension left the manuscript as the story progressed. The idioti...more

I just finished On Ice by J.D. Faver, about a woman, Rene, who runs from her abusive husband with her two children up to a tiny town in Alaska called Sad Horse.

Rene is hired as a teacher by a tall, bearded, Grizzly Adams type man who’s the love interest. The people there are warm and welcoming. Each one is a true character, which reminded me of Northern Exposure.

As Rene struggles to assist her children in adapting to this sleepy town, she can't help looking over her shoulder for her abuser. At...more

June Faver has a new fan and I just might squee on her FB page to prove it. On Ice isn amazing story filled with rich settings and--ohmigod, the characters! TJ, Terrence, Honeybee, Ben...I loved them all. After years of abuse, Rene finally decides to leave her Houston husband, with some help from her sister, and travels with her children to the wilds of Alaska. Once there, Rene transforms from terrified mouse to a woman with the strength and spirit of a bear. Most of the story flips between the...more

J.D. Faver's On Ice is a plot twisting thriller that holds your attention from page one to the very end. Rene Desmond's life finally becomes her own when she and her two children, Seth and Sara, flee her abusive husband, Mark's clutches.

As they travel from Texas to Alaska, Rene hopes the distance is enough to keep them safe and rebuild their lives. When she meets Brett, her new boss, she can't help being drawn to him and he to her. Brett has no idea of her past, neither do the townspeople who we...more

My old boss once said that I loved stories where women kick...butt. Its true. This book interesting, entertaining and thought provoking. Its nice to see the woman, who was abused by a maniacal and powerful man, take control over her life to save herself and her children. Is was great to read that she wasn't waiting on another man to protect her as she silently sat by but took matters into her own hands. Love to read about the courage and strength of women.

Not to be repetitive, I like the books description on the jacket and it sums it up nicely. The story has the flavor of "Sleeping with the Enemy", the obsessive abusive husband and Rene who has had enough.

You can't help but to fall in love with the contrast of characters in this quaint, remote town in Alaska she now calls home. The storyline and suspense throughout was great. I enjoyed seeing Rene developed a new sense of freedom and independence.

Overall this was a great read. There were a coup...more

FANTASTIC BOOK! June has been added to my favorite authors list. And her books have only recently been being published. This is one of several books I've read and enjoyed. But this one was "over the top". If you like romantic mystery, this is the author to check out. Enjoy!

Got this free from Kindle the other day. She was on the run with her kids from an abusive husband. She wound up in Alaska. Told the story of her finding true love and the ultimate battle with her abusive husband.

Yep, I loved this book, and as a former abused woman I DO NOT do well with books about other abused women. But this one worked for me. I loved all the quirky side characters, and Rene just kicked a**!

I absolutely loved every single word of this book. Every character was well-defined and I felt like they were a neighbor. Great settings and great writing. Will read more by this author!

Free book on Kindle that I decided to take a chance on. I was surprised with how fast paced it was and that I actually became interested in a few of the characters.

I downright loved the way this book was woven together, a woman on the run from an abuser, trying to make a new and safe life for herself and her two children, a sister who loves her and risks all to keep her safe, and an abusive husband who will stop at nothing to punish his wife for running away. The story goes from Houston to Alaska with a brief stop in Europe while the sister leaves a red herring, but the husband won't be deterred, won't play by any rules but his own, and it comes down to an...more

Very good book, kept me on the edge of my seat. Also loved seeing what a close knit community Alaska has and how they really care for one another.

What lengths would you go to to leave an abusive husband? What would you do to protect your children? When faced with these questions, Rene decides the best way to stay safe is to disappear. With the help of her sister, Rene and her children end up in a remote Alaskan town. At first the townspeople reminded me of a group of misfits, but the more I read the more I appreciated the small town feel...when everyone knew their neighbors and would go above and beyond to help them. Rene finds herself fa...more

I read another book by J.D.Favor recently and while doing a review realized I had this book floating around on my kindle that I had never read. Since it’s hard for me to resist a lady in distress story line, I dove right into this. The story details the flight of Rene along with her children from her abusive husband. Her sister helps her escape to Alaska where Rene plans to be a school teacher in a remote area. This story was well written and I really enjoyed the secondary characters that played...more
