I take offense because selkies are seal-people.

And awkward because if he's got a tail, he can't exactly kick, can he?

And this:

worries me a lot.

Jamie is just the king of picking up strays – dogs, orchids, men. He’s the king of “make it better”. He is the quintessential codependent. When he is out on the water, relaxing on his boat, he is accosted by a dead-looking creature who asks to board the “ship”. Jamie isn’t sure what he is, a dead guy? A joke? A really desperate gay man looking to get laid? Jamie is kind of ticked – he wanted to be alone! Because he goes by the “make it better” scenario, when he finds the beautiful (well, after pinking up a bit) man lives in a place where being gay will get you killed, Jamie takes pity and helps the guy get off. Jamie is just funny! He is NOT letting the merman in his pants “despite his impressive physique, the guy had “bottom” written all over him and “charity case” written in the spaces in between”. That just made me laugh. But eventually, Jamie tells Marin to go.

He is a bartender and there is a customer, Tad, that Jamie wants. Jamie has actually given Tad blowjobs on his break, but he’s hoping he’s more than that. When Tad comes in with a boyfriend, Jamie is crushed. At this point, he considers going back by the merman who looks at him with longing.

I admit, the blurb calls Marin a selkie and I always thought a selkie was a mythical seal/human shifter, so I was expecting him to shift into a seal! When he goes back through the portal to his own realm, Oh did I get worried on this one. Marin has a “mate”, a female. He is to breed her. Problem is, it’s very difficult to do so when you are only attracted to men. Sally is his best friend, however, and wants them both happy. I worried that they would be bringing Jamie in as a third. They tried! I was SO pissed at Marin when they went back to his realm. Yes, I understand the penalty for being gay there, but Jamie didn’t ask to go and Marin acts like a jerk. Poor Jamie. Then he’s faced with Sally. POOR Jamie!

What’s a fish, err merman to do? If you are Marin, you act dejected and sad and adorable, and then put yourself in peril to find your man. Jamie has great roommates, who are accepting and funny. All the characters in this story, even when being a jerk (Marin!) are likeable and funny. You want them to be able to “make sex” with who they want to. Well, maybe not Jamie’s mom. But everyone else!

This is cute and sweet and recommended for shifter fans. And fish fans.

It is forbidden to have a homosexual relationship as a Selkie, but Marin cannot help the way he feels. Sent up to the surface by his future mate, he knows that if he finds a man willing to have sex with him it’s a possibility he will never go back. When he meets Jamie, he immediately feels an attraction to the beautiful barman. When their meeting turns sexual, his attraction to the human grows by leaps and bounds.

Selkie’s need to produce offspring and Marin cannot leave his fertile future mate in trouble. He tricks Jamie down to the depths to try to get him to get him to help him get her pregnant. Will this deception ruin any chance they had of getting involved in a real relationship?
This book worked on some levels and didn’t on others. I love Daisy Harris, and I love her writing, and I think the fluidity of the tale was the thing that saved it for me. Jamie was a lovely character and I enjoyed the story of his growth. I think that his character was a lot more consistent than that of Marin’s who seemed to change so fast I got whip-lash. He began the tale as a walk-over, a man that would do anything for a stray or a man he wanted to pay him some attention. I understood why he was on the boat but I didn’t understand why he thought engaging in sexual play with a stranger, simply to be nice to him, was a good idea. I understood why he went back after being rejected again because Marin gave the impression of adoring him. I say impression because at certain points in this book, I doubted Marin liked Jamie at all and didn’t just crave the sexual contact of another man.

Marin’s physical appearance weirded me out a little at first. He had blue/grey skin and a tail which became a bit like a skirt to reveal some legs when he wants to walk on land. It was an ingenious take on the merman legend but it certainly took some getting used to. I liked his character at first but then he used an unfortunate situation with the police to get Jamie to his home to try to get him to help impregnate his mate. At that point he was an ass. Yes, he makes up for it. Yes, I liked his character a little more by the end, but darn it was hard work not to hold that against him. In that instant he broke all my rules of being good book boyfriend because he put Jamie into potential emotional and physical danger to suit his own ends...not cool dude, not cool at all.

The smexing was awesome. It was hot, tender and totally worth reading...I have never been disappointed by a Daisy Harris sex scene yet! She manages to bring tenderness and heat into scenes with ease; perfect erotic book material.

Overall, a mixed review. The world was novel and interesting, the sex was smoking and tender and the writing was fluid and easy to engage with. The only problem I had was with Marin’s character but it was quite significant issue. I encourage you to try this book if you like MM PNR because he may not annoy you as he did me :D

What Jaime needs is a boyfriend that isn’t down on his luck. No more of these guys who take all his money, his heart, and then leave. Jaime’s Merman is a erotic m/m romance from Daisy Harris featuring a horny merman who just wants a little lovin. Bow chicka wow wow! Ok, seriously, I’m not sure I can take this seriously. Jaime’s Merman was so over the top, so out there that I found myself shaking my head during the 90 min it took me to read it. I can get down with some m/m romance. I can even enjoy mermen/mermaids because I love the other mere series Daisy has. I’m not sure if it was the length that bothered me, the lack of relationships, or just a bit of everything.

This was just a bit to short for my tastes. Because of the length there was no real relationship build up between Jaime and Marin. Within five minutes of Marin swimming up to Jaime’s boat in the middle of the bay, Jaime is allowing Marin to get himself off while he watches. I mean, whaaaaa? Jaime doesn’t even know him. He’s a merman for God’s sakes.Something Jaime had never even knew existed. But hey when you need to pleasure yourself, you just need to I guess. Jaime spends a lot of time ogling Marin’s body which I found funny because when they first meet he basically thinks he’s ugly. He then goes back and forth with himself about what he wants, when he wants it and even if he likes Marin or just the sex.

Marin just wants to be gay. Punishable by death in his society he is supposed to mate with a pre-picked female to produce offspring. Problem is he can’t because he wants something she just can’t give *wink wink nudge nudge*…..and she apparently wants a human. So what does she do? Sleep with Jaime’s human and straight room mate within maybe five seconds of meeting! These are just some horny fish.

So way too short, no believable relationship buildup, off the wall horniness and a human that is constantly changing his mind. This just didn’t work for me.

I give Jaime’s Merman by Daisy Harris 2.75 stars(less)

Jamie, a knight in shining armour, is here to save the day! He's protective and gives everything to his lovers. His trend of lovers has been piss poor. He seems to home in like a heat seeking missile on the hot mess men who take and never give back. Even though Jamie is a sweet bartending guy, his character can easily be swapped out for a female character – the one who wants to "save" the guy and help him become better. Once the proverbial changed man is on his two feet, he dumps the emotionally invested gal (Jamie in this case) and finds something better to suit his needs.

I cringe at this type of character. Still, I think since this is an m/m book, I'm more forgiving and found Jamie to be rather loveable and funny. Jamie is accosted by Marin who is a merman or better yet, a Selkie from another dimension. Pause. Yes, from another dimension where homosexuality's penalty is death by ripping to shreds from other mermen. This would definitely explain Marin's desire to cross over to Earth side.

Marin is a strong and virile Selkie. Basically, he is a steaming hot merdude. I like Marin quite a bit and wish he played on the same team as me. Then I could envision getting down and dirty with him. His frolicking sensual manner in the water is a dream come true. I'd love to be able to enjoy some smexy fun in the water. It's not easy to do.

Marin doesn't come to Jamie unattached. There is a complication as Marin is mated with a female Selkie to reproduce young. Due to his attraction to men, baby making mechanics are not functioning as required. Marin's mate, Sally, comes up with a plan which involves a non consenting Jamie. It all works out in the end since this is a happily ever after Siren story.

I like this story because I love stories with Selkies and mermaids or in this case, merdudes. The story line is simplistic and at times funny. While reading through this story, I couldn't help but think that Jamie is merely a female character written as an anatomical male. This is what distracted me and made the story just okay for me. The reason why I found it to be this way is because Jamie's pondering and responses are ones I observe more frequently from a woman, not a man. I tend to be heavily loaded on male friends. None of them think or respond the way Jamie did in the book. Even my gay male and female friends don't think that way. It's only the few more girlish female friends of mine who behave and think like Jamie. My recommendation to Ms. Harris is to observe and question more men - hetero, bi and homosexual alike. It will give her better insight into a man's minds and create a more realistic and complex male character.

The world building is light and since it is only book one in a series, I'm hoping the following books will shed more insight into the Selkie world. It seems more fascinating and fun to me over there. Then again, I'm not a gay man so I'm safe in the Selkie world. I recommend this paranormal romance book to those who enjoy mythical water creatures.(less)
