In her words and through her wisdom, we learn about the History of India in the forties of the 20th century, as miss Gandhi describe the fight of India for freedom. It is a heart breaking story of personal scarifies, as a whole community is fighting for its freedom in a way that leaves you heart broken. I enjoyed reading the book and learning about the people and their perspectives, their experience, and the way they look at life and the value of life. I learned while enjoying. I give this book...more

I am partial to stories about India; this I must admit, which makes me begin my readings with high hopes. The way this story related to the struggle for independence and resulting partition of India and the new Pakistan caught my interest and motivated me to keep on reading, no matter what.
Ms Gandhi's characters told their own stories in first person -- even the deceased. In fact, when this occurred early in the book, I wondered how the plot would work. Well, she was able to weave each story int...more

'Freedom of the Monsoon' follows the lives of four friends, Dev, Pooja, Amit and Sunil, and of the people who made a difference to them during the years from 1942 to 1947. The settings are Gujerat, Simla and Bombay, India. Rakesh, who is involved with the struggle for Independence from the British Raj, does not want his brother Dev to follow in his footsteps as he believes one of them should look after the family. Dev's life, and that of his friends, is changed by the fight for freedom. Freedom,...more

Before I read Freedom of the Monsoon I already knew that the satyagraha approach has been a model for many protest actions since then. I could see its continuing influence in this book. The echoes of the Quit India movement in demonstrations during the 1960’s in America, and in recent actions of the U.S. Occupy movement were clearly visible. Satyagraha means non-violent resistance. Yet the response of the authorities to non-violent protest can be violent which can result in protesters fighting b...more

Set against the historical backdrop of the last years of the British Raj and the Quit India movement Freedom of the Monsoon tells the story of a group of friends; Rakesh,Dev,Sunil,Pooja and Amit.

Ms Gandhi's prose is free-flowing and deeply evocative of this turbulent time in history. But this is far from being a preachy history lesson.

It is a story of love and friendship as well as enduring courage and resilience to the trials of life. The characters experience loss, pain and debasement before e...more

A really engaging story about the time shortly before India's independence from the UK. It begins with a bang and keeps you involved throughout the whole book. The characters are fantastic, deep and beautifully presented. I felt I was right among them during their struggles, hardships and success. One day I just have to visit this diverse country rich with culture and people. She included a little hindi dictonary in it for the words she used and I absolutely loved it! I was able to learn some co...more

What I really liked about this book was the fact that the characters narrated their stories in first person. It was quite easy to read except for the few Hindi-gujrati words. I understand that there's a dictionary available as an appendix which might make things easier fir the likes of me who despite being an Indian can hardly understand gujrati, marati etc. Overall I had a good experience!

I like to spend my waking hours reading and writing, researching the net and blogging, and penning my novels.

When I am not doing this, I carry on with my job as a mother of two boys who are my life.
Freedom of the Monsoon is my debut novel.
