Rebels of the 512 is the best satirical novel about pirates, ninjas and evil politicians in Austin, Texas you'll ever read.

Is this because it's likely the ONLY satirical novel about pirates, ninjas and evil politicians in Austin, Texas you'll ever read? You'll have to decide for yourself, grasshopper.

Rebels of the 512 is, however, novelist Laura Roberts' 2011 entry in Cana...more

Does it really matter what political parties "stand for" any more? What if you stripped away the bumper stickers, the phony piety and hollow everymanism to expose their true essence? You'd probably end up with something similar to ninjas and pirates. Both hate each other. Why? Who cares. Let's fight.

There are similar scenes in Laura Roberts's excellent humor novella, Rebels of the 512. (Note to author Roberts: I know you're an editor and may ding me for using "Roberts's," but I stand firm on usi...more

Written in only 72 hours this was Laura Roberts entry in Canada’s 3 day Novel Contest.

Just a week before the start of the new term, History teacher Suzie Jimenez received an E-mail from the head teacher informing her that due to Governor Nick Harry’s budget cuts their school would be closing it’s doors indefinitely and she was fired. Angry, confused and looking for answers she contacts all the other teachers and together they set up a protest march in front of the Capitol building. This is j...more

It's a wacky premise: a corrupt Governor shuts down a high school causing a wave of demonstrations soon leading to ninjas battling pirates. It's ludicrous. It's fun. It has sex scenes. It was written for Canada's Three Day Novel contest.

It is a political satire picking on conservative religious greedy politicians and backwards hick Texans. I never felt that it was real or deep enough to be a truly scathing criticism. The descriptions, characters and plots feel underdeveloped like someone wrote t...more

Ok, so I'm a bit biased since I live in the 512 (and to a lesser extent because I won this in the Goodreads First Reads giveaway) but while being from Austin will help you get all of the references, it's by no means necessary to enjoy this book. Do you have or know of a blow hard Governor with blow dried hair? That's good enough.

In a swift 100 pages (and in just 3 days of writing) Laura has fun with political conspiracies, ninjas and pirates in this fine helping of Tex-Satire.

Just because it ha...more

Okay, the first thing you have understand is this book was written in only three days during the 3-Day Novel Contest. If you're gonna stay up for most of 72 hours and write a novel, you're gonna have to make it really interesting to keep yourself going.

Well, Rebels of the 512 is non-stop swashbuckling and kung-fu grip. It's a carnivalesque melee of sensationalism and violence in the battle between good and evil. Definitely worth a read.

I read the ebook and I wasn't sure what to think of the book when I first started. I didn't know what the book was about, but kept reading and found so much interest in it. It wasn't my favourite book, but I really enjoyed it. I mostly loved that it took place in Austin, Texas (I'm from Marshall, Texas and know people that go to UT in Austin). I would still recommend this book though. Well done Laura Roberts.

It was funny and fun. A light approach to a heavy topic on all our minds right now... Politics and idiots in (or vying for) public office. I read for pleasure the first time around, so I'll have to reread to give a more detailed review, but the general gist is: I loved it and I laughed.

Some very funny stuff. At first I thought the character might wake from a dream. When she didn't I relaxed and enjoyed the ride. The author's tongue's in her cheek and should stay there. She has an unsubtle subtlety.

*First Reads Won*

This is a humorous short story which brings in a wide variety of elements (including a quote from the Princess Bride :D, among others) together as entertainment. Some elements appear out of nowhere, but as this is short, not much detail should be expected.

It also is a parody of real fears and real views that many people hold. Being brainwashed, vigilantes, and absurd cuts into education are things that actually exist and are things not considered by many in depth at all. They ma...more

Laura Roberts is obsessed with sexy stories, political satire and religious epiphanies. Having published several books on sex and one on politics, she's debating whether to fully shun herself from polite conversations with the inevitable conclusion to this trio. For now she'll stick to humorous erotica with her fictional take on life in the sex trade with her latest novel, Naked Montreal.
