Review of Images in Scarlet

When Allie Caine sets out for a new life in Santa Fe, all she hopes for are two things: to leave behind in Missouri the memories of her family's deaths and her broken engagement, and to start a successful business as a photographer on her own. The last thing she needs is to come across the prone figure of a man blocking her road. The young man, known only as Jake, has his own problems. Recovering from injuries and imprisonment in the recent War Between the States, Jake

I absolutely loved the story. I could barely put it down. I finished it over a two day period of reading. In my opinion, the story is a good western with plenty of action and romance. The cover doesn't give much hint as to what the story is about. The author, known for researching historical facts for her stories, does an outstanding job of making the reader feel like you are there in the middle of each scene. I loved the attention to details of what it was like to travel west as part of a ...more

How many plots are there in literature? The answer ranges from 3 to 36 amongst those who sit around counting. I am intrigued by how an author may indulge in a plot device time and again, with fresh characters, causes or resolutions to create a captivating story. In the case of Velda Brotherton's novel, IMAGES IN SCARLET, the plot concerns how a boy with a traumatic past meets girl wth same and how they will overcome the obstacles to their love, with a twist here and there. This simplistic ...more

When Allie Caine heads west from Missouri after the Civil War, she doesn't count on finding a man lying in the middle of the road. Allie has plans that don't include men after her fiance deserted her when she needed him the most. But Jake is a man after any woman's heart and so they travel together toward Santa Fe where she plans to begin a photographer's studio.

Their adventures bring them in contact with outlaws, killers, ladies in distress and unusual characters who make their life interesting

This book is actually written by Velda Brotherton. I suspect that it will soon be released as an Ebook under her name, with possible a different title. I was fortunate enough to find it at my local paperback exchange. I have recently discovered Velda Brotherton's historical fiction books and have enjoyed them immensely, this one was no exception. The hero repeatedly blacks out throughout the book, sometimes falling off his horse, which was pretty humorously written. The rapport between the hero ...more

Enjoyed this story line. I was intrigued continuously as I read this book. Allie was a fun character that forged ahead at each curve and never backed down. I liked Jake immediately and he provided a challenge for Allie. I would recommend this book.

Velda Brotherton is a master storyteller. Not only does she spin a whopper of a tale, she gives you spot-on historical fact. She's a brilliant writer and an amazing researcher.

Velda Brotherton writes of romance in the old west with an authenticity that
makes her many historical characters ring true. A knowledge of the rich history of
our country comes through in both her fiction and nonfiction books, as well as in
her writing workshops and speaking engagements. She just as easily steps out of
the past into contemporary settings to create novels about women with the ability
